Most of the food here is 3.5-4 star quality. Good, but not outstanding. The chips are fresh and good. However, it's the Tortas that stand out here. Oh lord, are they good. Tortas are Mexican sandwiches, aka Mexican Banh Mi. Most of you know that, but I just want to avoid any confusion. My favorite is the Toluca Torta, which is tender pork loin, spicy chorizo, and mild, creamy Oaxacan cheese. It's savory and satisfying. The East Bay Express review of this place calls it the best sandwich place in the East Bay. I'm not sure if it's THE BEST, but I can tell you that the Toluca Torta stands with a Prosciutto and Mozzarella sandwich from Genova and, of course, Bakesale Betty's Fried Chicken Sandwich as one of the best. I've tried other tortas here, and all are great, but I have a hard time not getting my beloved Toluca here. The Lafayette location is generally easy to park (with a lot in the back, which I didn't discover until many visits), and the restaurant has a nice patio and seating on the sidewalk. The best part is that this restaurant is within easy driving distance on a weekend from my apartment in Rockridge, but also close to my office in Walnut Creek! It's really a treat to go to this place on a workday. And it's much easier than the now legendary lunch trip to Bakesale Betty I once made from my old office in San Fran. read more

This is the best Mexican food around the area. Very authentic compared to the other tex mex places or the taco stands with mounds of slop in their food. You can tell that they take care in the preparation and use quality ingredients. Try the pork tacos. read more

I love Mexican food ,but finding a place that has an authentic taste is quite difficult. El Jarro is a great place that has that touch! Great food, Great prices! My favorite plate I have had so far is the chilaquiles. They are exquisite! I have never had chilaquiles cooked in chipotle sauce and served with a steak on top! I've been coming to this restaurant for over 10 years and can honestly say it is the best Mexican restaurant in Lafayette. The food tastes so fresh and the vibe inside is the right amount of cozy and quaint. Everything feels super authentic too which I appreciate. I like to get their chicken tortilla soup whenever I'm sick because the broth feels both nourishing and comforting. I also tried their blackened tilapia for the first time today and it was so frigging good that I had to come on here and do them justice. I just feel like sometimes restaurant food is so salty and greasy or too rich and so I really appreciate places that can make something that is delicious, but in a simple way that isn't over the top or anything. This restaurant, while small, has excellent torta sandwiches. We love to eat here as a family. I did try the enchiladas once and was not impressed. The tortas are wonderful, though! I took my sister for lunch one day and she hasn't stopped talking about the sandwich she had there. read more

Food was good service was excellent. Chili Rellano was in a puff pastry, different but tasted good. Enchilada with ground beef in red sauce was excellent. Chicken tamale with chile verde very excellent. Rice and beans were very good as well. Salsa mild and hot was excellent but the creme de le creme was the garlic blue cheese butter spread served with the chips and salsa. Prices for all the above was only $16. I've been here a couple of times. As a native Arizonan, I'm still looking for a Mexican restaurant in Northern California that I really like, and this place isn't it. The food here is decent (a tad expensive, but I think that's more the area), but the service, as others have mentioned, is a little lacking. What I haven't noticed a lot of people mention is that they absolutely refuse to split checks, so if you are coming with a large party or want to pay separately, make sure to bring cash. Small place on Mt. Diablo- almost like a Taqueria style- quick, authentic, and okay service. YES you have to pay for chips and salsa, we all try to make a living- calm down people! The salsa is delicious, and definitely recommend the guac. The margaritas are small, but good. I got a wet chicken burrito- definitely recommend. I love this place for many reasons! It is not a chain, and it does use fresh, good ingredients. I have a hard time ordering other than my favorite, and unlikely Mexican Ceasar Salad with a very healthy portion of grilled shrimp. IT IS THE BOMB! My friend also swears the nachos are the best he has ever had! the tortas are enough for two meals (we love the chicken and the pork) and the burritos are great! We have liked this place but last night was a disappointment, an expensive one too. There was three of us, one teenage daughter who wasn't that hungry. It came to +50$. Granted we had 2beers but the charge for chips/salsa 2.75,guacamole 2.50 small bowl of beans 2.50, scoop of rice 2.50 was added to the two taco order($5), Quesadillas 6$(too cheesy) and steak fajitas 13$ that paled in size and taste to others in town. My tortillas came in previous customers basket with one cold tortilla left. Ew! We want to support this place in town but don't nickel and dime us. Not even sure about take out anymore with the small burritos mentioned for 9$. Three stars for the food that we have had in the past had been very tasty. read more

Tasty authentic mexican food. Their chips and guac are fresh and fabulous. They have the best shrimp tacos - stuffed with shrimp, guacamole and salsa on a grilled corn tortilla. Carnitas tacos and burritos are yummy, too. Tortas are just so-so. Takes awhile to get your food but it's much better to have your meal in the restaurant rather than take out to appreciate the freshness. read more

Some of the best Mexican food you can find in Lafayette. I've been many times before, and I'm sure I'll be back again. The chips, guacamole, and salsas are delicious and are ready moments after you sit down. The service is wonderful and attentive. I'm hooked on their chilaquiles, and steak quesadillas. Sit outside with a Pacifico and you'll be in heaven. Looks a little small at first glance, but they have a back room as well that's good for bigger groups. Great spot for all ages. read more
