Previous visits to the area we have gone to a Mexican restaurant in Carbondale with a liquor license - thinking that that El Jalisco did not have the same. Glad to know we were wrong. Delicious margaritas - and - the quesabirria tacos? Oh my goodness - I can't get enough. SOOOO delicious. We were there with three adults and one toddler. Two of us devoured the quesabirria and could not stop raving about how delicious they were. Rick enjoyed a burrito - and the chips and salsa kept the ten month old in our party very happy. Will definitely be back on our next trip to Murphysboro. And while I love to try different dishes - the memory of that quesabirria taco has me salivating. Ohhhh - so good! read more

Our recent experience was very disappointing. Food came out fast but was very bland and then we found hair mixed in my partners food, so not just fell on top. We brought it up to our server and he immediately said it wasn't anyone's hair because it didn't appear black. My hair was pulled up and my partners is very short. We went back and forth with the server which I think is unprofessional and he came back with the check with only 10% off. We used to really love the place until a group of our family members (about 10) got together around 8pm one night and they seated us near the back. We were enjoying ourselves and there were not many other people there at that time. There was no one near us. We were talking and on occasion laughing. Well someone from the kitchen shushed us very loudly!! We were kinda shocked. We came here while visiting family over the week of thanksgiving. We all decided on Mexican food and the family suggested that this is the best place around. We were leaving one of the local wineries and the staff asked where we were headed for dinner. As soon as we said Mexican they also confirmed El Jalisco is the best place to go. We walked in as a group of 6 and were seated right away. The service was fast and our drinks always remained full. The food hit the spot and portions are large. I stopped here for lunch based on a local's recommendation and I don't regret it! Like every Mexican restaurant, they have chips and salsa on the table; the salsa here was incredible and the chips were hot! I always look for flautas on menus to judge how Mexican the place is (versus how American-ized it is). I was quite pleased to see them and ordered the lunch plate. Their menu does a good job of "American-izing" in that the flautas were also labeled as taquitos. But the flavor and the crunch were what I loved to eat in Mexico. I also ordered the sopapillas for dessert and enjoyed them. You can order them as a stand-alone or add a scoop as ice cream. I naturally got the ice cream but the sopapillas are delicious on their own. read more

Terrible service. We were seated and then ignored for 25 minutes. We tried to stop waiters as they walked by and none of them Decided to become our waiter. We finally just left because we were tired of watching all the people who arrived after us being served while we were ignored. We just moved here from Southern California and we didn't think we would find good Mexican food. I have to tell you, this place is excellent! The seasonings on the carne asada and carnitas were perfect. The salsa that they give you with the chips when you sit down was a little bland for my husband, but perfect for me. Since they give you your own dish for the salsa, I told him to doctor his up with the habanero sauce that is on the table and he like that. My husband got the carnitas and they were smothered with grilled onions, which he didn't particularly care for so if you order that plate and you don't want the onions, just ask for them to keep them off. My husband and I live very close to El Jalisco, and come regularly. Our food is always consistently good. Dishes we have tried that we love are pollo Jalisco, dos changuitos, Mexican taquitos, and burritos Azteca. However, the service is not always consistent. Sometimes you get a great waiter, and other times it's meh. We have found sitting in the back gets you better service - I have no idea why. Introduction: I've been going to this restaurant ever since it first opened, which to be quite honest I'm not sure exactly when it was. Before El Jalisco's, my family would go to Sergio's in the Marion Airport. I've tried every Mexican place in the Southern Illinois area including: Sergio's, Tequila's, La Fiesta, Don Taco and El Bajio (now closed). El Jalisco's is the absolute best. Food & Drinks: Free chips and salsa are provided automatically, while you wait for your drinks and look at the menu. You have to order the Queso Blanca! It is delicious.The chips aren't crumbly white chips (Tositos-ish) like other restaurants I've been to. They are golden brown and crispy. One of the things I love about this place is that the salsa varies. One time it will be sweeter and another it will be spicier. The salsa is the absolute best out of any restaurant around. My favorite entrees are the Pollo Jalisco or the Burrito Fajita. The Pollo Jalisco is rice and small pieces of chicken mixed with the Queso Blanca on top. You can get the Pollo Jalisco by itself or with the dinner. I always get the dinner. The dinner comes with fries and a small Mexican salad on the side, which is lettuce, pico de gallo, sour cream, and shredded white cheese. You wouldn't think that fries would go with this meal, but they actually added some sweetness with the ketchup and breaks up the meal. The Burrito Fajita is a burrito wrapped in a white flour tortilla shell with your choice of meat inside (I always get steak) covered in the Queso Blanco. It comes with rice and a small Mexican salad. I haven't gotten this, since I've found the Pollo Jalisco. Service: The service for me is better probably than the average person, because I'm a regular here. My parents are weekly patrons. Every so often, the waiter will get something wrong. When I mention it, they will fix the issue quickly. Most of the waiters speak English very well. Atmosphere: The restaurant looks like the typical Mexican restaurant in Southern Illinois. It has brightly colored walls with things from Mexico hung up everywhere. You can sit at booths or tables. Pros: The price is right for good Mexican food. Cons: Some of the booths are damaged and have the vinyl coming off. Some of the tables are a bit too wobbly. The cash register and entrance area gets congested quickly on a busy night. read more

I wanted to try a new Mexican restaurant close to my temporary "summer home" in Energy, Illinois and El Jalisco is about 10 minutes away in Herrin. I saw Enchiladas Verdes on the menu, but it came with three and I just wanted two. The friendly server also told me the green sauce has onions and cilantro. He took my order as two cheese enchiladas with green sauce and rice and beans. I ordered it togo and it only took about 10 minutes. The food was really good and authentic. I saw little bits of cilantro in the sauce but no onion. I'm good with both of them being out! The chips were pretty good and the salsa tasted fresh. If I had to say anything negative about the food, it'd just be that I wish the food was a little hotter...but again, I did order togo. I'd definitely visit El Jalisco again. read more

Chori pollo, carnitas, fajita nachos, all of it is good. I eat here at least once a week. Get a giant beer or margarita and enjoy. You can also get roasted jalapenos on request which are really good.
