The food is great but the service is not. Unfortunately a lot of the waiters have a really bad attitude and will snatch the menu/cards/etc right out of your hand. I completely get how difficult being a server is, especially having an off day, but they are ALWAYS rude no matter how friendly I try to be with them. I made a to-go order last night, and picked up my order about 1 hour before they closed. By the time I got home I realized my order was wrong. I had paid $2 for extra cheese on my order and instead got no cheese. Not a huge deal but still disappointing especially since I paid for extra and got none at all. By the time I had noticed it was just 20 min before they would be closed, so I decided to just call in the morning and ask for my missing order of queso. But when I called this morning to ask if I could just swing by to grab the missing queso, I was told "no" the reason being that I should have called last night. I explained the only reason I didnt call last night was because they were quite literally about to close and I didnt want to keep them open just over some cheese, but she still refused to correct my order. I just find it a little mind boggling that they weren't willing to correct my order over such a tiny request. I wont be coming back which is very disappointing because the food is great. Not great Mexican food, but good enough. I tried this place on a Saturday night and it was pretty open. I guess it was a little early because they are known for their humongous margaritas, and when I say humongous, I mean glasses as big as your head! I ordered a burrito. Don't remember what it was, but it had big chunks of meat in it. The burrito didn't have anything but meat in it because the rice and beans were on the side. I thought the meat was too salty, but it was cooked very well in terms of tenderness. I loved their pico de gallo. Very fresh and yummy. Prices are very reasonable and the service is great, but the food is pretty average in my opinion. Maybe I'll try something different next time. read more

I have never been a fan of Tex-Mex. Always shied away from Mexican food. However, Sergio's is something I will never say no to. Regret going there for the first time in four years of staying in Carbondale. I ordered the Seafood Molcajete. If this is what the Molcajete is, I'm sold. Fresh scallops, juicy shrimp, and perfectly seared and seasoned fish. Steamed broccoli and cauliflower in a creamy queso sauce. Oh Boy! Friends ordered the Pineapple variations of chicken and seafood. Tasted great, however I liked mine better. These dishes can get a little expensive, definitely more than the one $ indicator. However, worth every penny. Cannot wait to go in there and try more of their menu. Definitely Recommend. read more

This is my all time favorite Mexican restaurant of all time ever (I have been to a ton I can assure you it is like my tummy just wants delicious tacos all day every day). I lived in Murphysboro for 4.5 years and went here no less than once a week. One year I gave Sergios up for lent which was damn near impossible. The guys who work there became like my second family, celebrating birthdays, Christmases and of course Cinco De Mayo and the World Cup together. It really was like my second home/family and I miss it very dearly. To this day their chimichanga which is always perfectly crispy filled with this delicious pot roast style steak is the best that I have ever had. My only complaint the entire time I lived there was that they did not have mexican beers on draft but since it was in So. Ill that was not very surprising. I would not say Murphysborians were known for their tolerance of much diversity so Bud Light and Miller Light it was. Their queso is the best and I can say there is nothing better than sitting on their deck on a warm summer night with your friends and a big beer. Seriously heaven. Can you tell that I am missing it alot? No it is not authentic Mexican cuisine, it is very much Americanized to serve its core audience in the Boro (I can not tell you how many times I have witnessed people get chicken tenders there, for realz?). The margaritas are great, the servers and super friendly and wonderful, even though it is super tiny it always seems to expand to fit the large groups I would bring annually for my birthday parties complete with tequila shots, fried ice cream and sombreros. If you are looking for a fancy experience this is not it, just a wonderful hometown favorite. Miss it so very much. read more

This review is for the New CARBONDALE STORE. It was sure worth the long wait for it to finally open. Food is great! Best Salsa in Town! (Yes a little on the hot side please don't change it!) Place is not to be missed! Went at lunch just before it got really busy ordered the special and it was on my table in less than 10 minutes. Place was clean and bright, a pleasant dining experience. There was a bug in our food. I heard rumors about they reuse the chips there. I checked my other food for bugs. Didn't find any.

Had higher hopes for this restaurant. The chips were okay, but the salsa too hot. My beef taco salad was average and served in a plate full of oil. I would have gotten a beef quesadilla but I didn't see it on the menu. Margaritas were expensive and average. Edit: Margaritas were awesome. Still not a good experience. Mia culpa, "Sergio's American Mexican Restaurant" (I will call you by this name because it's what you are) you are what you are and you do it well. I have visited you too many times to leave only a low rating, it's not fair. As a Mexican American Restaurant I must admit you're probably the best in So IL, I have been to quite a few "Mexican" places around So IL Murphy, C-dale, Marion, Centralia, and Du quoin. Your el pastor is not bad, (just annoying I have to make special arrangements for corn tortillas), your hot wings are unlike anything I have ever had before, and they keep calling me back for more. Your shrimp cocktail actually has some slight reminiscences of dishes I have had south of the border and at good restaurant specializing in cerviche. Never had a bad fajita, and you fish tacos bode well for the southern mid-west. My son has always enjoyed your horchata as I have enjoyed your large porch and many Mexican beers there. So again sorry, in all reality I was a little too blunt when you consider what part of the country you're in. Keep up the good work, and maybe try putting some real Mexican dishes on the menu, it might surprise you that if there done well they will sell well. read more

Sergio's is the first Mexican restaurant to pop up in Murphysboro and remains the best. The owner is very friendly and is often on hand to chat and mingle. They've added a lot of shaded outdoor seating which is great at this time of year and in the cool autumn weather. I really like their seafood dishes and salads. Extremely disappointed tonight after dining here weekly. I had the 7seafood soup, and there was little seafood in the soup and it was 15.00. When I complained they didn't seem to understand.
