This place is small and sort of hole in the wall. It is not beautiful and it does not need to be. It is very clean inside and that is all we care about. Look or you will miss it. This is real Mexican food. I have been to Mexico and this is the real deal. The cooks are great, the service is very nice and they speak Spanish and English. They are happy to see you and will give you some great ideas for the their best items--it is the cafe de la olla. But everything is good. It is a must stop. We got out order to go and ate at a nearby park. We had a great time. Now, they close around 6 I think so don't be late. They have the best enchiladas stuffed with chicken or you can get beef. We love their omelets and I am very picky about that. I have had their steak omelet as well as their chicken omelet. I was in heaven. This place is great and it could use more customers. I discovered they have very decent cafe de olla (which is something that I haven't really found since moving from the west side, where Monte Alban lives), and solid huevos rancheros. Delicious. For appetizers, they give you some regular (medium, but still spicy) salsa, and then they will give you a green salsa. Beware. This is not the mild, flavorful salsa verde that you get in most places. This is habanero salsa from the devil. It is painful. (remember, I can't take spicy) Their corn tortillas are made fresh in house and some of my favorite tortillas ever. Super thick. Perfect with everything. Cash only (there's an ATM right outside), and they have a single stall bathroom that is tiny and clean. Parking is street, but pretty easy since it's mostly residential. ***** (From March 2019) Cousin was in town and eating all the good foods that LA offers and wanted spicy. Ordered some shrimp enchiladas with red sauce. Medium, out of respect for my delicate tastebuds.... "medium" my left butt cheek! Cousin got the garlic shrimp and kept asking for something spicier (I'm honestly not sure if they just didn't have anything spicier, or they were scared she couldn't take it...but you bet she could!). I had AYCE churrascaria at H&H Brazilian Steakhouse (go check out my review) the night before, my stomach were still wondering what it did to deserve such harsh treatment. Cousin's stomach is an anomaly. Pretty sure she has a hollow leg where all the food goes... Anyway. Back to the food. Chilaquiles with mole and egg was amazing. And spicy. I'm a wimp, k? Ended up bringing home the shrimp enchiladas and mole chilaquiles. Next day, ended up scrambling the chilaquiles with two more eggs, and it was perfect. My boyfriend and I walked in for some authentic food. It is a bomb! My Pozole hits w all the spices and flavor, before I even out like and all the veggies in it. My boyfriend's burrito is always unforgettable! The waitress Bo's/waitress was so sweet, she brought all the sauces and fresh chips in. And mid way of our food, Michael came in to asked how we liked the food (opinions from this Asian couple to try their food the first time :) we loved it! But Michael WOWed us by bringing his coffee in the house, it's black coffee with palm sugar and cinnamon! I love it, considered both of us are not a coffee drinkers and still love it, it speaks a lot about their coffee! This is such an authentic little humble restaurant that will not catch the attention of travelers, but I would wish to eat their authentic dishes if I were to travel! This place is probably well known to the locals, but its worth a visit if you live DTLA or San Gabriel area, South Pas etc.. its a small place runned very well, clean, quick service, and DELICIOUS food at an affordable price. The sauces, tortillas, meat, eggs are ALL right on. They braise their meat so it's tender, they cook their beans to make them creamy but not heavy, their hand made tortillas have the correct thickness and crunch. This place is really great. Period. We were looking for a good place for late breakfast/lunch and stumbled upon El Huarachito. After a short wait we were seated outside, which was exactly what we'd hoped. I was thinking about Huevos Rancheros because that my usual Mexican breakfast choice. However, I decided to get the Chiles Rellenos which were excellent. They were nicely battered and the cheese was a bit sharp and melty. Just so very good. My kid got a wet carne asada burrito and my wife ordered the same but dry with the beans and rice on the side. No problem. The salsa was very tasty too with a nice kick. I've read they have spicier options so I look forward to trying that next time. Be aware that El Huarachito is cash only so plan accordingly. All in all, just great.
