Visiting San Antonio I wanted to find a local panadería in the area that wasn't downtown. A firm supporter of Hispanic businesses that are family owned. El Folklor Bakery is a small yellow building south of city. Great employees, easy to get in and find all the delicious pan dulce. They had a good variety plus some that you don't see in CA. Fresh and sweet. It went perfectly with our hot coffee or hot chocolate that evening in our hotel. I will return when I visit San Antonio again in the future. read more

The selection was good and they had awesome empanadas! We tried the strawberry and pineapple!

So if your visiting SA or you live near by this is possibly just a tiny bit further from downtown but not a bad distance to go for some authentic delicious pan dulce that won't leave a hole in your wallet. You could probably even use a bird or Uber scooter from the downtown and enjoy some talented graffiti art along the way on Hackberry and even take note of one of San Antonio's best steak places called the Lil' Red Barn to keep in mind for another meal later. I swear this panadería has added more pan dulce and options since I first started going here. Now there are other panaderías all with a little bit different taste and there is a difference. This one. Well this one whatever Manteca they use is not super lardy and it has a light fresh dance on the tongue. And it's enough to sink those teeth or gums into. Lol. As it's still possible to eat this with limited abilities for some. Whether you can enjoy it with a big glass of milk or a delicious cup of coffee. The pan dulce from here won't leave you disappointed. And on the weekends you can add tamales! Now the tamales, I won't say are the best but it's a fair representation of a decent tamale in SA. They do taste good but I think a little less masa would make it a little better unless you like it that way then it would probably be the best for ya. I hope you can enjoy and give this panadería a shot. It's my favorite about a 5-10 mile circumference of the area. I do have others I like to but this is a great place to go when you're in the area and close enough to downtown but able to avoid some crazy lines. Buen provecho! read more

I've been to this place twice and both times I've seen rodent droppings and roaches. I've brought it up to management very discretely, but they act like they don't speak English. I understand about not wanting to do your part, but please with everything we have going on please do your part. They also use the same dirty bucket water to wipe down trays and counter and anything else inbetween. read more

The bread is fine, it is nothing you cannot get anywhere else in San Antonio, especially in the Southeast side. Drive down the street and you'll eventually find comparable pan de dulce. Let's stop pretending that they offer a distinguishable alternative because they do not. We've checked this place out when we roll into town because we know what were getting for pan. My issue with this place is the pricing and how it varies from person to person or whoever is ringing you up. Before my previous trip, we spent around $12 worth of pan and I asked for a box so that the cro-magnon clerk stopped trying to fist everything into one medium sized white paper bag. She said, "sure" and then she charged me a quarter for the box! WTF?!! She sneakily rang it up too. She did not say, "boxes are extra." I let it slide but come on, I'm buying $12 worth of bread and you're gonna nickel and dime me on a freaking piece of assembled cardboard that isn't even grease resistant. You would have thought I was walking out of there with a box full of Philly cheese-steaks. Whatever. Fast forward a month and we're there again because unfortunately, it is on the way. This time I am being a bit more conservative on the amount of pan I am buying. We grab a few soggy empanadas, a bit of cookies, a chocolate chip cupcake, and a regalo. I walk my pizza pan of pan to the register and there is different person ringing me up. As I watch her, she charged me $1.79 for the chocolate chip muffin!!! It was not sized like a muffin you get at Sam's or Costco. It was sized like a cupcake you get at a kid's birthday party. $1.79 and it was stale and dry, according to my kid. I got one 3/4 filled bag and the total was $10 and change. Less than half of what I bought on my previous visit ($12). I'm sure somewhere in that total she added the cost of the white paper bag, the wear-and-tear I put on the tongs I used to grab the bread, and a little extra for the oxygen I converted into carbon dioxide. If we could do half-stars on here, I would do 2.5 because they deserve better than 2 stars but less than 3. The bread is fine, just like anywhere else you go. I guess they do cakes for parties but I have never (nor will I ever) used them because I'm sure they will generously charge you for every single drop of food coloring and every egg cracked. read more
