The service was good. The food was tasty with the exception of the fried plantains which smelled like old oil and tasted like old oil. The prices are crazy high compared to other Peruvian restaurants in the area. $34 of the fish plate (corvina) my husband's churrasco was $32 and it was small. I haven't been to El Fogon for lunch specials before and I was thoroughly impressed. It's a very authentic Peruvian restaurant with a wide variety of cuisines. I decided to order the Pollo Saltado which is as chicken with onions, tomatoes, white rice and fries in a stir-fry type sauce. What I found really interesting is it also came with an appetizer of your choice on this menu which I ordered the yuca fries with a creamy dipping sauce. The food came out quick and was very fresh. First time visiting and upon reaching the restaurant and entering, I enjoyed the way the tables and booths were arranged along the sides and the "kitchen area" occupied the center of the shops- I just liked this layout. We were cordially greeted and our waitress tended to our needs and was very good with recommendations for available options. We did note that several of the offerings were not available at different points of our meal- they were out of anticuchos: but she recommended the "virreinato del pulpo" that was absolutely soft and phenomenal! They didn't have tartar sauce but she brought us several hot sauces and it worked out... and with our main choice that was the taster plate "degustación peruana" we asked for huancaina sauce and we got a small container (that was billed separately for $5). There was no bread for the table- but they did put some "canchita peruana" (fried corn delicious" The food was all nicely seasoned and smartly plated. The portion sizes were generous! I was disappointed that the desert variety was so slim (only 3 options 2 of which were "tres leches"-type...) but our waitress explained that come the weekend, they sell out of many things so on Tuesday they have not restocked yet... oh well. Tonight's experience was definitely out of the ordinary for this place. Since my first visit, I've returned numerous times for take out. This evening I WAS STARVING when I arrived (which no doubt played a role). Placed my order for Chicharron de Pescado for my kid and my normal Pescado Saltado. I placed my order at 6:59 pm and then I sat down outside. I observed a couple walk in about 2 minutes after I ordered. They requested a table and were seated (you'll understand why I mentioned that later) After about 10 minutes, I went to the counter (because that's usually how long the food takes...they never tak). I wanted to ask for the green sauce instead of the tartar sauce for the fish. The girl at the counter told me no and that if I wanted the green sauce I needed to pay $1 for it (for the small size that usually comes in your bag of takeout with maybe a tablespoon of sauce inside) So I told her never mind but then I proceeded to watch them throw a green sauce into every bag that had take out. But the icing on the cake was, there was a woman standing beside me at the counter who had ordered a lomo Saltado. I walked outside and she exited right behind me and handed me the green sauce they had given her FOR FREE. So now im pissed because I also ordered a Saltado and the employee told me I don't get a sauce with mine. So of course, NOW IM HUNGRY & HANGRY AND IM ABOUT TO BE A BLAREN. Lol! So I ask for the manager and without any issue, he told her to add the green sauce in the bag with my order. Okay so I'm waiting and I'm waiting. I watch as numerous people who arrived well after me, leave with their order. Maybe they ordered online or something right? Because here I am 30 minutes later still waiting. But then I look over at the couple who were seated 2 minutes after I placed my order...just to see if they had food yet. Not only did they have their food, they were nearly done eating. The girls at the counter are addressing everyone and being extra friendly to everyone but my sauce fiasco must've ticked them off because I was non existent even though I was standing right there at the counter. Now I'm starting to show signs of impatience. The manager passes me and sees I'm still standing there and he says in Spanish "go check her order Chicharron de Pescado!" The girls walk off and return empty handed but still no one says anything to me. Just as I start craning my neck looking for the manager again, my food is placed on the counter in o be packaged up but both girls are busy doing nothing. One is off to the side looking at a receipt and the other is talking with one of the waitresses. Finally they come over after my food has been sitting there for a few minutes (felt like an eternity) and packages it up. I received food in hand at 7:44 pm!! The kicker? I ordered food from here two nights ago. But I didn't ask for sauce at all. When I got home and opened my bag, there was a red sauce, a green sauce and a white sauce AND a tartar sauce on that night. Tonight when I got home, I had ONE LONE GREEN SAUCE FILLED ABOUT A THIRD OF THE WAY UP. I ORDERED THE EXACT SAME FOOD TODAY THAT I ORDERED THEN. So what did I learn? Not to mention the sauces at all and let the cards fall where they may. read more

Checked out this local Peruvian restaurant tonight and wow were we impressed! All of the food items we tried were so full of flavor, from the fried avocado to the authentic Peruvian dishes. We went with a fried avocado for our appetizer which had a mixture of shrimp inside and guacamole on the side. I had the classic lomo saltado and it was amazingly delicious. We also had a chocolate flan that was so rich and tasty. The presentations for all the dishes were also very thoughtfully done. Service was great, friendly and attentive staff. We thought it was going to be a small place but they had a lot of booths and space for larger groups as well. Def a new place I'd like to go back to often! read more

Last night we had the pleasure to try this Peruvian restaurant. We loved it!!! Drinks: Frozen limeade DELICIOUS! Appetizers: Avocado friend stuffed with shrimp sauce and guacamole DELICIOUS! Despite previous yelp review on this appetizers they improved the quantity and it was perfect to share 2-4 people. Main course: Lomo salteado. DELICIOUS! Served hot and fresh meat tender perfect amount of meat, onions, tomatoes and French fries with white rice. Not over powered. Cocked to perfection we have had many Peruvian restaurants menus this location was perfect. Dessert: OMG! Chocolate Flan SO GOOD YOU CANNOT MISS OUT ON TRYING THIS. This restaurant is awesome, I stopped there after an appointment. Our server Ale was friendly and explained the different lunch specials to us as well as the ingredients because we have some dietary restrictions. I am a big fan of ceviche and I love that you can get a smaller portion of ceviche as an appetizer and a larger entree with lunch. If you haven't tried the purple corn drink it's called chicha Morada. I highly recommend it! Service was fast and there was no wait, it was peaceful at that time of day with plenty of booths available. I also had the Papas a la huancaina, I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't spicy. I do not handle spice well and most Peruvian restaurants make the ceviche and the Papas heavily spicy. I thoroughly enjoyed lunch and I will return again soon for dinner. read more

We had stopped going to this place for some time as the quality had been going down, mostly salty in seasoning. We decided to give it a try once again this week, what a mistake. We had the fish and shrimp plate, my son has been throwing up since that meal, the rest of us not so great either. Very disappointing to say the least. Customer service was great, waitress was very attentive and with an excellent disposition to make it a good dinner experience. This is the only reason for the 1 star. The restaurant has always been a family and friend favorite until now. We sat down immediately and ordered appetizers and dinner. The food came out on time/quickly which is great. However I didn't get what I ordered. Items I asked for were missing and of course I was charged for on the bill. While the music and food were great, the staff was flirting with each other while I was to trying to get their attention for help and another beverage. To top it off, gratuity is already charged and I did not approve of that. It's extremely unfortunate this restaurant has changed to operate like this. We went here with family and friends for lunch today. It was 6 of us in our party & the restaurant was only 1/4 full; about 15 people. The waitress seemed nice at first but after about a minute, she was just passive and uncaring. She was just going through the motions "What do you want to drink? What do you want for appetizers?" I didn't think much of it at first and I was hungry so I went ahead and ordered the Papa a la huancaína appetizer. Then...as we're waiting.. here comes our discovery~ On the way to the bathroom i discovered (on the front counter) a small 10x7 plastic table stand-up sign that said "SPECIALS"... I brought it to our table to show my family & friends. We were in shock that **the waitress only gave us the full price menu & did not even mention any lunch specials (that are nearly half the price of the full price menu!** The specials menu has great deals at about $12 you get a full meal with appetizer & salad! We felt like the waitress didn't want to tell us about the specials so she could get a bigger tip (given a bigger total on our 6 person check!) It was shady (& deceiving) to say the least. After eating, the food was good.. nothing super amazing but good. Throughout the time we were there, the waitress was missing..I had to get up 3 times to get another waitress' attention. She never refilled our empty drink glasses.. never checked up on us.. never even asked if we wanted dessert. So here's the gist~ The restaurant ambiance is nice. Great fun Peruvian décor (pictures & signs) The food is OK. The waitress was horrible & shady. Non-attentive uncaring..& she still got a "gratuity included" tip on the bill. Loved this little Peruvian restaurant! I ordered the ceviche lunch special which came with an appetizer. I chose the tuna with mashed sweet potato. It was very good. My ceviche arrived and looked delicious. There was lots of fish surrounded by sweet potatoes, and crunchy corn pieces. The fish was awesome! It had a great lemony flavor. I couldn't stop eating it. The sweet potatoes were cooked perfectly and had a sweet, cinnamon flavor. I would definitely recommend this place if you are in the mood for fresh ceviche. I'll be back! read more

Great for lunch! This gringo went for the classic Peruvian comfort food dish of "Lomo Saltado" with a cold delicious glass of Peruvian purple drank AKA Chicha Morada. I've had this dish many times and this was by far the best I've ever had. Salty and savory, extremely tender beef. The chicha drinks are a bit pricey. We tried this place about 10+ years ago when they first opened and now remember why we didn't go back. I've been here many times with friends and family for quality Peruvian food in the area. This time around I noticed some changes. First off, they redecorated a bit giving the restaurant a nicer feel. Not so much cafeteria style. Also, the dishes came out like if you were eating at a high end restaurant. Our waitress was very attentive, telling us about certain dishes, even showing us pictures of some popular dishes. She was always checking in to make sure we were ok and was just so nice! The best part, food! My friend ordered the Lomo Saltado. Came out delicious! The meat was flavorful with juices flowing, and you can taste the perfect amount of garlic in the rice. Don't forget to ask for their garlic sauce! Goes great with the meat and fries! I ordered the Huancaina pasta with the Churrasco Steak. When I come here I order the ceviche mixto AND the tacu tacu con lomo soltado. I never had a bad experience here. The only complaint I might have is they change the look of their dishes each time. Like once their ceviche was in a big bowl the next time it was in a smaller pan looking plate. But the taste is still there, it's consistent so I can't be mad.
