What an awesome lunch I had here today! Everything about this restaurant is old school Mexican which is just the way I like it. Authentic and not fake! I would really consider this restaurant a cafeteria with great charm. It's also double the size of most restaurants are find a comfortable table was no problem at all. I ordered two volcans with charbroiled bistek, and it was cooked perfectly. They have other types the of volcans like the arranchera and costillas ribs. The best tacos we had in Mexico City. This is a casual, inexpensive spot with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. I was happy to find several vegetarian options in almost every category on the menu. Service was fast and friendly, and portions were larger than expected. One taco was really more like two tacos. My favorite dish was the Mushroom (Hongos) Tacos, which were so flavorful and hearty on their own that the cheese was unnecessary (albeit delicious, and crispy around the edges). Landed late night and needed something good to fill this growling belly. Stayed near by and found this around the corner and it was holy! SOOO MANY OPTIONS ON THE MENU. Soon as you sit down you are warmly greeted and served some tostadas with about 3 different salsas. (To die for) after the food is ordered it takes about 5-10 minutes for them to make it right in front of you. Just the quesadilla alone had about a pound of cheese!! Ugh recommend with all my heart. I'm visiting Mexico City for the first time on vacation and staying with friends in la colonia la condesa. They recommended the place so we checked it out. It's basically a fancy taco placo that you find on a street corner just a lot cleaner and with more choices. So if you want street tacos without the gritty street atmosphere try this place. But be warned. Two of us ate and it was almost $500 pesos, for tacos! They have a good selection but I don't think it worth the price if your on a travel budget. If you're a tourist and don't speak fluent Spanish do not eat here. Our server (did not get his name) was annoyed with our questions about their menu. He brought out my food but purposely left out my husband's order. He never came to check on us. He just walked by and gave us dirty looks. The food I ordered was okay not much flavor. BUT we love the faroladas de bisteck (pita bread with steak and cheese), the carnitas are good, the vegetarian alambre (cactus, mushrooms and onion fajita) is really good too. Strong competition to El Califa....in fact, they are directly across the street from each other. In our quest for the very best al pastor, we tried El Farolito and we're not disappointed. Salsas are great--- the vinegar white onions are addictive and necessary on top of whatever you order. We had the conchita pibil (Yucatán style pulled pork)-- this is not the spot for that. Other restaurants' meat will be far more flavorful (needs more juiciness and acidic notes).... but the soups are delicious, the al pastor comes out quickly and is still a bit moist.
