I was quite excited to try this place out considering how many stars it had on Yelp. But was very dissapointed on the service when we got here. We arrived on a Monday at 4pm, resteraunt was dead and we were the only party of 5 there. We ordered right away and once the food came out the waitress who took our order stated that the tacos were coming out were "costillas". We had only ordered the Al pastor tacos and the chorizo tacos so we were confused and told her right away that we didn't order that. The waitress immediately became defensive and told me that that's what I ordered. I told her calmly, no mam, I know what I ordered. I would never order this and yet again she sternly states no you ordered this so if you don't want it that's on you. I looked at her all crazy in disbelief so she then asked the cook what tacos are these and he states chorizo. The lady then turns around back us and says oh here you go it's what you ordered with a smile. No apology, no nothing. I was in disbelief. Since I'm American, I guess I'm use to customer service and clearly this lady had 0. The chorizo tacos ended up being horrible, would rate them a 2 out of 10. However the Al Pastor taco was delicious! I would rate those an 8.5 out of 10. If I'm in the area, I would probably only pick up the Al pastor tacos and TO GO. Delicious tacos. I ordered the nopales, chorizo, and steak with bacon and onion. It appeared to have only locals there. It is pretty much two large tables in the middle and seating along the wall. From afar it looks run down as there is a bucket with garbage collecting water from the rain inside. There still is the large menu on the wall. It's not about the asthetics because my nose told me this is a winner. I'm not afraid to check out a "hole-in-the-wall, because usually the food is so great that it doesn't matter. OMG....the best tacos I have ever had in Mexico. Seriously!! Don't be scared off by the lackluster appearance. I was kind of afraid to go in but the high Yelp reviews made me do it!! I'm glad I did. I order the nopales and the bistec tacos. The meat comes out on a plate with street size tortillas on top. You make your own tacos and they have the salsa, limes, etc. I also really enjoyed the chicken soup. That broth was soooo flavorful. They are tiny street tacos so order more than less. It was plentiful but not un-cheap. I made the mistake of ordering one of the bisteck + torcino specials that comprised of a plateful of meat chopped with onions instead of tiny tacos to try. I was famished after my flight and just relieved to find (any) taqueria. Wasn't my favorite but was partly my fault because I should've ordered the thing so obviously spinning in front of me. Delicious food, great portions and good service. We ordered a side of grilled onions, which were a great add-on to our tacos. For the tacos, we did the 12 specialty tacos (6 pastor and 6 costilla (rib), the tacos can be ordered solo, 3, 6 or 9 I believe). I liked the bistec a lot more, the pastor had a sweet terriyaki flavor to it which I wasn't expecting. The variety of salsas were delicious and all had a strong kick to it, the limes were extremely juicy. The price of the meal was very cheap for how much food we got - the food did take a while to but ordering was easy and quick. We had a late night dinner so it was easy to snag a table (larger table that is shared by other groups), but not sure how it is during peak meal times. read more

Such a solid spot for tacos. I've been to El Caminero a few times and it doesn't fail to disappoint. This time I went a bit early so I had to wait for them to open at 12 pm. My favorite thing to get is the al pastor and chorizo. I've gotten the tacos de chorizo with cheese before but it was a bit too much cheese for my liking. The al pastor is very tasty and the chorizo perfectly seasoned. The salsas are spicy and perfect to add to the tacos. I also would suggest to ask for the onion and cilantro if they don't give it to you right away. A side of avocado to add to the tacos completes the entire meal. In this visit our al pastor didn't come with pineapple because we were too early and were in a bit of a rush so needed those tacos ASAP. If we wouldn't have been in a rush I'm sure the tacos al pastor would have come with pineapple or if not we would have asked for it. The service is mad speedy and the staff is really nice and overall attentive. Definitely will be back! read more

This little hole in the wall has some of the best al pastor tacos. The taquero places 3 tortillas at the bottom of the plate and meat on top of those tortillas and a few tortillas on top on the meat. Old school local taco joint. Community seating, cold beer in bottles, and a selection of various tacos, which can come in an order of 3, 6, or 9. Three of us went and ordered 12 tacos, of chorizo, steak and chicken. They were cooked to order, and the tortillas were plentiful. We also ordered a couple steak burritos which were small but very flavorful. All of the sides of salsa and various chili verde sauces were terrific. Incredibly inexpensive. Was really hoping to like this place when I saw the reviews, a cool little hole in the wall taco joint amid some bigger and flashier restaurants. Unfortunately it didn't live up to the hype for me. I went with the bistec con queso, al pastor and pollo con queso. Those are my main ones I get when trying a new taco location. They had a lot of other options on the list I'm wishing I tried now instead. Like chorizo, alambre style with peppers, onions and bacon, or rib meat with onions and bacon, etc. my favorite was the chicken. It was juicy and had good flavor. Unfortunately the other two were pretty bland and almost tasted burnt. I might give it another try if I stay in the area again but there are a lot of other options around too, so we'll see. read more

I love this place! I went twice while staying at the nearby Sheraton Maria Isabel. It's definitely not a fancy place. I've heard so much about the great street tacos in Mexico City but was warned about a US visitor eating from the typical food stand. I'm guessing that the tacos at El Caminero are what people have been telling me about. There is a very simple menu - how many tacos do you want, what meat, what topping. When my wife and I first visited, we get two orders of 'orden 3 tacos,' which is your choice of 3 tacos of one meat. We got an order of pollo and an order of pastor. Each order is a big mound of meat served with a pile of small tortillas. I didn't count the number of tortillas but I guess a taco is considered to use 2 tortillas because there were at least 6 tortillas on the plate. It's a lot of food. We would have been fine with just one order. Both were excellent. With the tacos, they include 2 salsas (a rojo and a verde) and pico de gallo. They all were nice and spicy, especially the pico. For the pastor, they also give you a plate of fresh pineapple, cilantro and raw onion. Oh my, was this awesome! Nice, spicy meat, freshly prepared to order, and lots of it. We also had a couple of cervezas. The price was very inexpensive - 55 pesos for each order of 3, which is about $3.50. Total price was 190 pesos (about $12). I also returned another time and got 3 pastor tacos for just myself. Again, awesome. I could eat at El Caminero every day. read more

I had al pastor with cheese, and rib meat and chorizo with cheese. First, instead of the ground, fresh cotija cheese I thought I would be getting, I got a pile of meat with what seemed like a piece of melted string cheese dumped in the center. It was gooey, salty, creamy and bland simultaneously. It was actually unappetizing and disgusting. The meat was OK, but was better with some pico de gallo on it. Am staying at the Sheraton and the last thing I'm going to do in Mexico City is order hotel room service. I yelped and this was right around the corner. I gave it a shot and was so happy I did. Best meal i had in Mexico City. Great service and delicious tacos - chicken soup was top notch (I ordered 2) - salsas were fresh - very reasonably priced.
