I've given this place three chances since they opened, and unfortunately each visit has left me disappointed - and somehow each experience has gotten progressively worse. A friend of mine really enjoys coming here, so I've tagged along several times hoping my experience would improve. The service has consistently been slow and lacking. When they first opened, I understood some of the delays because there was a lot of hype and they seemed busy. However, during my most recent visit the restaurant was pretty empty, so I was surprised by the lack of urgency from the waitstaff. At one point, I noticed a server (who appeared to be wearing scrubs) on her cell phone having a personal conversation while things around the restaurant seemed to be getting overlooked. There were also chips scattered all over the floor by the dining room door leading to the patio, and they remained there for quite a while. It made the overall atmosphere feel a bit neglected. The biggest issue for me has been the food. Every visit, it has lacked flavor and, without fail, has been cold. What really confused me this last time was that our food came out very quickly, yet it was still cold when it arrived. The one positive I'll give is that the drinks are good. If I were to come back, I'd probably just sit at the bar and order drinks. The restaurant itself is cute and has a lot of charm from a decor standpoint, but unfortunately the food and service have been disappointing enough that I don't see myself returning. read more

I went to El Coyote for my birthday and the service was excellent. The staff was attentive and Adriana made my birthday experience special. The house margarita was very tasty! 1st time here. Esthetically, very nice. Beautiful patio area. Inside was decent...bar was huge , loved the lights that hung from the ceiling and on the table so I can imagine the nighttime ambiance is definitely a vibe. The waiter that took care of us was very professional and ran everything down for us so all those were pluses. It may be just me but I really didn't care for the food that much. Salsa was thick, almost like a ketchupy thick and I felt it lacked flavor. I didn't really care for the queso either. It seemed like there were pickled onions in it??? Or something that just didn't need to be in there. The chips were a bit on the stale side but I didn't want to complain. The tacos came out on the blue corn tortillas which were pretty visually but I wasn't overly impressed with the flavor from the meats I chose. The bar drinks we ordered were ok, my friends drink came with tahini on the side even though it was ordered without. The place wasn't busy at all but seemed short on workers???. Maybe it was just a bad day all around for the restaurant. I live out toward MWC so that was a drive for me to be a bit disappointed on food. I don't think I would personally drive all the way back out that way to give them another try especially with all the other Hispanic restaurants that are available closer to me. This restaurant has a beautiful decor. Inside is rustic and homey with comfortable tables and chairs. Outside you can sit at tables underneath the most beautiful tree. They have rope lights throughout the courtyard dining area which make the area very romantic and inviting. We had Haley as our waitress and she was just a joy to talk to. We ordered the expresso martini and the pomegranate punch to start. They were amazingly good. We also ordered guacamole with chips. The chips are freshly made and served warm at the table. Decided to eat here after an event across the street. Very good choice as the drinks and food were quite tasty. Was able to get a meal and a margarita for under $25 which is unheard of. The bartender was very nice and engaging. Restaurant was clean and quiet. They have a patio that looks great but it was way too cold to sit out there. Overall great experience. El Coyote's patio is the main attraction with a fire place and walls to block any cold wind. The playlist they were playing was also very mellow and soothing. Went on taco Tuesday where all tacos were $2 off. I had the fried fish taco. It comes with a slaw and spicy sauce. The sauce definitely has a little kick to it. Only complaint of the taco was wish that I wish it had something sour or sweet to offset the salty and spicy as the slaw had little flavor. Refried beans were very good. Had the sangria - no idea what flavor it was, it was just okay for the $8 price. Service was great too. A good place for a girls night or date night, just beware if you intend to have a serious conversation here, the trains make it a bit difficult! read more

I even had 2! The salsa was better than I recall. My husband had the burrito platter and he said it was good. I had the chili relleno. I really liked the flavor. My only recommendation would be to add more mushrooms. We decided to save a portion of our meals so we could try the cake. It was more moist than our previous try. The chocolate sauce made it nice. The place was cute and cozy - not busy at noon on a weekday so we were seated right away. We didn't have much time so we ordered everything at once. My husband ordered the special taco of the day, which was a pork based one and we both ordered the Camerones taco. I also wanted to try the rib tip appetizer. For our son we got the quesadilla. The portion size is amazing. Lots of food for the price. However, I just felt like even though everything LOOKED flavorful, it was missing that umph. The camarones tacos were the most flavorful. Ambiance is always really cute in this restaurant. Cozy feel! I got a Kale Mushroom taco, a fried fish taco, and rice and beans as my sides for the taco platter. The mushroom taco was lip puckering salty. I couldn't even finish it and I usually love more salty foods. The fish taco was fine, but honestly the slaw was the only flavorful part. The rice was also very salty and had a cream sauce on it that added to that salt. I also got two house margaritas and they were fine. Nothing spectacular. Be prepared for heat, it's not for the faint of heart! My go to is always the stacked blue corn chicken enchiladas served with red and green chili sauce and the refreshing pickled garnishment. I have never liked posole but theirs is delicious. Their queso, and multiple salsas are quite tasty as well as their guacamole. We wanted to like this place so much! We were given a gift card to celebrate our anniversary there, which we did on Saturday night. I called to put our name on the list and were told we would be fine to walk in 20 min. later. There was only bar seating, which was okay but it smelled like dirty dish water. If you've worked in a restaurant, you know the smell. The drinks were nice and interesting flavor wise- The food... the food was just so disappointing. I understand not wanting to scare people off with spice but it had so little flavor. we had the green Chile chicken nachos and the platter, for reference. It was not inedible by any means but it definitely lacked any kind of complexity or identity. The place itself is cute but the vibe felt off... like servers talking loudly about the game being on, the host had on sweat pants and a hoodie and the manager was eating at the bar. I wish they had a little more food variety to choose from but the food that they do have was really good. We started the afternoon with a couple of drinks. Husband ordered local beer Vanessa house 401k (they were out) so he chose something else. I quit drinking so I ordered a drink with no alcohol which it consisted of flavored syrup, sprite and club soda. They charged me $12.00 for basically a flavored soda water. They would have charged me per drink. I feel I should have been charged for a soda or ice tea. Waitress said it was because they had to mix it. . I don't know where to start! We love this place. We love Santa Fe, so it's not a big surprise, as the restaurant interior and patio scream "Santa Fe inspired". There are kivas, piñon, and ristras. Inside or out on the patio, it's gorgeous, cozy, inviting. We grump about hoping all the way to the N side (we're in Norman), but the food is worth it! I love the blue corn enchiladas, getting them Christmas style (try it), and the chile relleno (sp?) with shrimp or pork. We always get friendly service, and have a tough time picking where to sit--the bar with its behind the scenes view of chile infused margaritas (both of the 'hot' ones, I adore), the patio where their might be music (one time it was Edgar Cruz), the interior, cozy and brimming with fabulous food sights and smells.... El Coyote is a New Mexico style restaurant with a very limited food menu. Great cocktail menu. The complementary chips and salsa was very good. We ordered Queso, which was very good. I ordered the stacked cheese, enchilada plate; blue corn tortillas with a smear of refried beans, grilled onions, grilled peppers (menu did that state what kind of peppers) small grilled jalapeño peppers (with the skin still on - very unappetizing) grilled onions, topped with half green sauce and half red sauce (Christmas) a small amount of cheddar. For me, the stacked cheese enchiladas and both the red & green sauce missed the mark for New Mexico cuisine. My hubby ordered the Chef's taco platter, the fried blue corn tortillas filled with tender tasty shredded beef was delicious. We decided to try out El Coyte after reading about it in the 405 magazine. It's a lovely little venue. Southwest decor. Cozy inside on a cool November day with the fireplace going. They have a nice bar and outdoor patio. I'm looking forward to coming back and eating outside when it warms up. We really liked the chips and salsa. The chips are house made and kissed with a seasoning. I'm not sure what the seasoning is, prehaps a paprika and chili powder blend. We ordered guacamole, and it was excellent. Jan ordered the stacked enchiladas. It is an item that you rarely see on a menu. The enchiladas came with beans, hominy, and fry bread. She gave it a two thumbs up review. I ordered one chicken taco and one shrimp taco. Both were good, but the chicken taco poured water when I took the first bite. I liked the blue corn tortias that are also house made.
