We booked a tent and this was the highlight of our stay. I would recommend keeping interaction with the staff to a minimum. Don't expect the "friendly hippy vibe" they project to translate into actual friendliness (especially if you don't look like them). I expected the pretentiousness but when they were rude to my wife and I, even while we shopped their incredibly overpriced wares, (strangely enough the couple behind us seemed to get all the customer service we were looking for) I turned on this place. read more

Great for everything except getting some sleep. The yurts are on top of each other, not spread out like I'd expected, and you could have three tents full of drunk teenagers right outside the flap, which we did. The staff, grounds, and facilities were super cool though. read more

The tepee leaked. The campgrounds flooded for lack of drainage. But we still enjoyed it. Not every front desk staffer has love in their hearts for the visitors, but Mimi did. Liz Lambert's style is the salve for the weaker moments of El Cosmico. Honestly, the only part that is unforgivable is that train - it's like a comet of death that wakes you up at 2, 4 and 8 AM. But, then you have an outdoor shower and head to town to see an original Andy Warhol and you forget about the train. Sort of. read more

We loved our stay at El cosmico! The grounds are so cute and staff were all super nice. We stayed in the tent which was really cozy and the heated bed was so comfortable, I had the best night of sleep here! The bathrooms are so clean which was very appreciated. If we ever return, I would definitely stay in a trailer. I think it's worth the splurge to have space and your own bathroom. read more

I paid a room rate of $185 (included tax) for a trailer with an outdoor shower and the temp was a cozy 38 degrees ! Upon arrival, found the trailer to be approximately 150 yards away from parking area. The wagons provided were inoperable and so luggage had to be carried.....did not use the shower the next morning as we had to get an early start....cancelled the next two nights of our stay and moved to a hotel with indoor shower for a lot less money.......while the environment is unique, just too many Hipsters in a place lacking in basic amenities....while not adverse to the outdoor showers, we were adverse to paying a $185 per night for the honor....Ms. Lambert has been breathing in too much of the dusty dessert air !!! read more

Let me preface this by saying: I'm going to come back and write a review when I visit here in the spring. I visited at the very beginning of this year. One of the BIGGEST selling points of staying in the AMAZING yurt was that it was suppose to be equipped with a heated blanket. (remote controlled) The damn blanket didn't work when cranked up to the highest degree. My friends had to get COMPLETELY sauced to keep warm. There were 3 of us in the bed and I was still practically frozen the entire night! AND we brought a queen fleece blanket and a fluffy duvet with us ONTOP of the 3 2 blankets the yurt came equipped with. Because the blanket was so useless in that kind of cold, I have taken off 2 stars. Now...outside of that, I have NO complaints! None! I really can't wait to come back and spend some time in the spring. The YURT was INCREDIBLE!!! It was stunning and lovely and if you go there with a love, it can be incredibly romantic! The girl at the desk...(katia I believe)...was very nice and cordial. I look forward to coming back here in the warmer months and RAVING. The only thing that made me deduct 2 stars was the fact that in the COLD of January, the advertised heating blanket should work!!! read more

Such a neat place! We stayed in a teepee this past weekend and I adored it. Wonderful staff and the place was such a great experience. We had an issue the first night with a party deciding to start at 1130ish when it is stated that quiet hours start at 11 for the night. Asked them to shut it down and was ignored. Immediately, went to the front and called the emergency number. Within thirty minutes, it was handled. Slept soundly and enjoyed the entire experience. read more

My wife and I stayed in Little Pinky for four nights and loved it. The trailer was cool, clean, and small. If you and your better half don't mind tight quarters, it's perfect. The outdoor shower was wonderful and the porch/picnic table serve as a nice living room space to add to the tight quarters inside the trailer. El Cosmico itself is painfully hip. If, like us, you're not that into djembes, communal kitchens, and $150 bathrobes for sale, you may scoff a bit. However, the land is beautiful, the employees are friendly, and you can walk into town. read more

We didn't stay here but we did visit for a quick look around. It was a fun time as a cap to our Marfa visit. The gift shop was awesome, the people we met were beyond friendly, and they had one of my favorite IPA's available. Spent a little time in the lounge with some great music and an awesome record collection. For the hour or so we spent there, it was memorable and we will be back for an overnight stay. read more

Stayed for one night on a road trip from AL to AZ. Love the old movie Giant and it was filmed around Marfa, so had read up on the area and decided to stay here on way down to Big Bend National Park. El Cosmico sounded fun and they had an electric car charger so charging here overnight allowed us to go down to Big Bend for an overnight (stayed in RV park and charged there). It was unexpectedly windy and cold while we were in Marfa and I was a little worried about the safari tent I booked, but the bed was very comfortable with high end linens, an electric mattress pad and electric blanket so we were toasty and comfortable. A bit nippy when I had to use the outdoor bathroom very early in the morning but not bad. Walked to Marfa Burritos next morning for breakfast. Would absolutely stay here again. All staff we interacted with were helpful and nice, no pretentious vibe. The gift shop prices were high, I took my business to another place in town. Do not leave without visiting the old, historic, beautifully restored Il Paisano hotel in town. read more

This place was the highlight of our stay in Marfa. The receptionist was extremely helpful and friendly. You should bring earplugs since you're sleeping outside, the train goes right through town and woke us up a few times. We stayed in one of the tepees and it was awesome, it doesn't get much air inside but it was super cool. read more

For the first night, we rolled in late and rented a Safari Tent, so as to avoid setting up camp in the dark. It was a little overpriced, but it kept us secure from the elements, and had everything that we needed waiting for us. The campground itself is very nice, with clean and well maintained communal restrooms and baths. Spending time on the balcony reading in the sun and cool weather was definitely worth avoiding a standard motel, which would have felt a bit more claustrophobic. The second night, I paid $15.00 to just throw down a tent and camp. This was a great way to save money, and, as it is located walking distance from pretty much everything else in Marfa, really helped tie the trip together. If I had any complaints it would be that the amenities are a little bare bones, and that the gift shop is overpriced. This fact is easily offset to me by the fact that it is walking distance from the museums, bars, restaurants, and stores in town. Will definitely be staying here if I'm ever in the town again. read more

Sarah and team are welcoming, attentive and go above and beyond to make it the laid back lux camper relaxation station that it should be! The trailers are tastefully refurbished and offer the perfect amenities to enjoy some great coffee, music and friends. Great place for a romantic get-away or a group travel adventure. read more

I love this place. We stayed in the imperial mansion trailer and it was lovely. In October, the weather was perfect. We needed blankets one night and it was sweet! Even though we had a lovely bathroom with shower in the trailer, I really wanted to go try the outdoor shower! The common bathroom facilities are so cute. If the trailer bathroom is full, you can always run out to the common bathroom or the one in the lobby. The phone reception and internet access is spotty around Marfa but you can get a wireless connection in the groovy lobby. Don't forget your flashlight. The lighting is low - which I like - but if you need to walk around the grounds in the dark, the flashlight would be helpful. read more

Staying at El Cosmico was a wonderful way to experience Marfa. We stayed in one of their world class yurts, which contained some of the most comfortable beds I have had the pleasure to sleep on (or maybe they seemed more comfortable when juxtaposed with a large tent?) Also enjoyed the disco lights, clean and hip outdoor showers, hammock grove, and hanging out with new friends at the outdoor kitchen. Also, super walkable to both the Chinati foundation and downtown. I'll be back, and hope to snag an airstream next time! read more

Pitched our own tent on the campground for a night. The staff was helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable about the town. Was slightly pricey for camping as they charged by the person but considering we had the use of their very cozy indoor office/lounge with couches, wifi etc. it seemed worth it. It was very cold that particular night so having a warm indoors to recede to for 12 hours of the day was well appreciated. read more

We love this place and always stay one night there when we're in the area. Cool tents, fantastic wood fired hot tubs, and a surprisingly pricey but very cool gift shop. Be aware that there may be annoying people talking loudly near your tent after 11 pm. They are looking to get laid and may deploy guitars and other charm offensives to make it happen. read more

We booked a two night stay in the Imperial Mansion. The trailer was very large and had a nice comfortable bed. The A/C unit works very well and there is a nice sitting area outside. It is a very unique experience in Marfa. My only complaint is really just how overpriced it is versus overall value. It would have been nice to have something complimentary other than just coffee for $237 a night. Also, possibly provide some brochures or guides for the Marfa/Big Bend area other than just a map. If you want internet and TV this is not the place for you. I was okay with that part, but I would stay at a B&B in Alpine next time. read more

Every bit as fantastic of an experience as I had hoped it would be!!! I'll never forget this glamping in this vintage trailer- chic and well-done to the last detail! We will be back!! read more

Clean and comfortable. We stayed in a tent and it was cozy and great. The storms came in and got us--the floor was pretty wet but we stayed dry in our bed. You can hear people around you and unfortunately its a popular place for younger crowds you might hear some "hanging out" going on, though it is stated in the rules that noise should end at midnight. The showers are interesting because there are some slight cracks in the walls so you can see out and someone could see in, but no one actually is watching you. Plus you can hang something up if it really makes you feel weird. But I loved the showers because they were very rustic and yet clean. There were a few bugs in the tent but you can't avoid it. We would go back and try a TP or a yurt! But it was so booked we couldn't this time. read more

We loved El Cosmico. You definitely need to know what to expect, and if you're expecting a campground with refurbished trailers (exactly what is detailed on the site) I think you'll be more than pleased. We just got back from our trip to Marfa and were pleasantly surprised by all of the amenities that El Cosmico offered. We slept in Little Pinky (a do-able $50 a night) and had a canister of coffee, a grill which we used to eat awesome burgers, a great outdoor shower with hot water, and a very clean bathroom, sleeping area, and kitchen. We can't say enough about how much we liked it. To answer people about the lack of help offered by El Cosmico employees, I have to say... a lot of times they are giving the best answer to their knowledge. A lot of breakfast places are open in varying hours, varying days, with no set schedules. I know that sounds odd, but having been to Marfa several times, I've made a point to visit a restaurant only to find it closed on a Friday evening with no explanation, or closed completely. The ONLY negative thing I can say is that we had TONS of flies in the trailer. Partially our fault for leaving the door open to let the cool breeze in, but there were probably 15+ flies, and in such a small place it was obnoxious. A fly swatter would have been nice, or some kind of repellant, but it's summer in Texas... we expected insects. ANYWAY, if you're looking for comfort and convenience, I'd go to Alpine or Marathon, if you're more of the roughing it type, I'd definitely recommend El Cosmico, it will be a nice surprise. read more

Wonderful, wonderful place! Stayed in an amazing tepee and enjoyed the fire bedside. Staff was super nice, especially Mr. Shane who made a fire for my boys to roast hot dogs for dinner. Exceptionally clean and well kept facility, with a great vibe. We saw lots of rabbits and roadrunners. Wish we would have stayed more than one night! read more

El Cosmico - Campgrounds Near Me - Marfa, Texas

See all

El Cosmico is absolutely something special within itself but, as with anything, people are what the greatest things in life magnificent. Ashlie who is, or should be, the ring leader at the El Cosmico Provisions Co. store is hands down the greatest human, employee, singer songwritter? in the history of our existence. When I placed my order for a sweatshirt, she picked up the phone to give me a call as she wanted to make sure that I was getting exactly what I was wanting as the lettering on the sweatshirt is a little bit hard to make out. THAT is putting the customer first over just trying to get products out the door. That is what customer service is ALL about. It's the human element of business. I had really wanted a blue work shirt that was "sold out" on the website and after expressing this she offered to sew on the patch for me and ship it out with my order as they had not had a chance to make new ones yet. I told her my size and build and she recommended several options. She has the best taste in town! A real class act. The El Cosmico packaging is amazing but I cannot not express enough how amazing Ashlie is without flying a banner over West Texas, the West Coast and maybe even around the entire globe to express it. So, since I can't afford to fly a banner around the entire globe I, at the very least, needed to write a review. I have personally never met Ashlie and, although she doesn't have any interest in politics, I think the population of the United States would agree that she would be the best candidate for the first female President of our great country. El Cosmico, please give this girl a raise, a promotion and even a puppy if she would so like one! She definitely deserves it. I am from Texas but live out here in Santa Barbara, California and they simply don't have women like Ashlie out here. She is a gem, a treasure, an asset to us all and well... Buy things from her!!! You will not regret it. read more

ALAMO CINEMA DRAFTHOUSE!!!! Awesome movies

Very cool place. It has a sociable, hostel feel -- it's a good way to meet people (in the lobby, in the hammock area, in the kitchen, etc.) We camped (in part to save money, in part because the yurts and teepees were full. But everyone kind of mingles, though you can also have your own space. If you're averse to camping, this is a nice way to do it without going all-in. (My friend hadn't camped in 20 years, and enjoyed it.) Though you're in a tent, you have access to surprisingly warm and nice showers, a fridge and kitchenette, and the lobby/patio/hammock common areas. So you're not out in the woods on your own. It's walking distance into town. Staff was nice. Cool crowd, cool vibe. Liz Lambert rocks. read more

I've now stayed at El Cosmico four times: camping, safari tent, teepee and trailer. I have been super happy in all four instances. I'm not sure what people are complaining about here when it comes to the staff, this isn't a traditional hotel and you shouldn't expect to get the whole Texas-fake "HEY Y'ALL" treatment when you walk in the door. I've camped all over the place and I can say hands down that this place is special, but only if you have an open mind. For instance: the trailers are, on paper, overpriced. I can admit that. But they are NOT overpriced when you consider that by chilling outside them on your porch, playing your violin in a hand shaped chair at dusk with a bottle of tequila and a welcome mind set, you are likely to find yourself singing with strangers and debating the meaning of life with them late into the night. Stuffy people beware! And the teepee was rad. read more

My boyfriend and I stayed at El Cosmico for 5 nights recently (a rare length of time, according to the staff) and had the time of our lives. We stayed in one of the safari tents and loved it. They do get quite hot during the day but you're in the middle of the desert so that's to be expected. The bed was very comfortable and staff provides you with plenty of blankets (including an electric one) for the cool nights. We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful and the campground itself is beautiful with plenty of space. Coffee is provided in the mornings and the hammocks are the perfect place to read a book or take a nap. I didn't expect to enjoy the outdoor washroom facility as much as I did but it's a pretty cool facility. Nothing beats an early morning shower surrounded by grape fines and the Texas air! El Cosmico - like Marfa - truly is an oasis in the middle of the desert. read more

I liked it here! Stuff in the gift shop was kinda pricey ($80 dollar bottle opener!) but the trailer experience was great! The air conditioning was hard to figure out, but the area was very photogenic, and they have hammocks and an outdoor cooking Area. The communal bathrooms are nice, but only have one toilet. I would recommend this place. read more

I'll preface this review by saying that I am not particularly well travelled and am accustomed to polite service. That being said I can say without hesitation that this is the worst place I've ever stayed. Upon arriving and attempting to check in my wife and I were told to " wait about five minutes" while the "concierge" interviewed a potential hire. That five minutes turned into fifteen minutes ( a conservative estimate ) and we had to insist on being dealt with before we were given our keys. Little did we know that would be the high water mark of our stay. The Trailer we reserved was not in a secluded desert as the photos would have you believe but rather packed between a private businesses parking lot, a trailer park , and a cramped circle of trailers, tepees , yurts, and pop up tents. The trailer itself was in poor repair ( with easily half of the indoor lighting being nonfunctional and a frozen ac unit) . The so-called free wifi isn't available outside of the main office. The maintenance staff seemed quite disinterested in our ac and the office staff seemed equally nonplused with our concerns. Overall I would say that marfa itself and el cosmico specifically is a tourist trap. If you're looking for anything beyond kitsch this is most certainly not worth the trip. read more

Unfortunatley, my husband and i were not welcomed into this place after a super long drive from austin. We asked the receptionist , who looked bored out of her mind, for a room and she reluctantly offered us a tent, not wanting to tell us the price, and then went on to say its pretty cold tonight, to keep us away! were totally turned off! bad vibes! we will not be going back! read more

Don't waste your money on a visit to El Cosmico, especially if you're staying in a tent. I know that that this is supposed to be "glamping" & a free-spirited place, but the tent situation is ridiculous. Ours was stained & had holes in the side and, after about 30 minutes of light rain, the floors were soaked and bed was damp. After coming back from dinner, I found my backpack and new books completely soaked through. When I spoke to the person at the front desk, all they could offer me was a set of towels. I would love to see how the tent holds up after a real rainstorm. Staying here might get a few good pictures for Instagram but is not worth the low quality service and overpriced amenities. read more

If you are a hipster you'll love the place. If you are wanting a regular bed and nice surroundings stay at El Paisano. This is a good place for events and concerts. read more

First off, to be fair I have stayed at El Cosmico twice. The first time, a few years ago, was a very good experience. I stayed in a teepee during the height of summer. The place was not crowded, staff were helpful, and the teepee was fine even in the heat as it cools off at night. The last experience, in September, was very different. What hasn't changed is the location. Be forewarned - El Cosmico is right off a main road through Marfa and trucks drive by at all times so if you are staying in the tents you will def. hear them. The field tents are not cheap and at $80 or so feel like a rip off. There is one set of outdoor bathrooms fairly close by. However, when the place is full, as it often is now, they are very crowded and be warned that they offer little privacy. There are a second set of outdoor bathrooms that are clear on the other side of what is a very large piece of property, so a real trek from the field tents (closer to the trailers). The outdoor bathrooms are rustic and offer little privacy. If you are going to the bathroom, to be a bit graphic, you can literally see and be seen through the wooden slats by the person taking a shower. And of course, hear everything. Taking a shower outdoors is great, but there needs to be a rethink of the privacy issue. The other issue is one that all of Marfa is dealing with. The town has attracted ever more very young entitled "hipsters" (sorry, no better description) who are there to party and El Cosmico is def. on their radar. We had a group staying in the tents who were up partying until 3am and in addition people who were not staying at the hotel/campground walked in and were hanging out. There is a number that can be called and a staff member is supposedly staying on site during the night. Finally, it doesn't rain much in Marfa, but when it does staying at El Cosmico is not ideal. It's paying a lot to "camp" in the mud. The place is a a great idea, but it needs to figure out what it wants to be/who it wants to attract. The overall vibe I got from this second stay was being ripped off. From the overpriced Americana/western/glam hippie curated goods in the lobby to the $80 tent, it's charm has worn thin. read more

Oh, El Cosmico.. where do I even begin? My expectations were so high that I was honestly worried about being let down once I arrived, but that was not the case. Driving up to the entrance, I was surprised at how close the place is to town (literally a 15 second drive) but that turned out to be a good thing! Almost everything we wanted to do was extremely close by, but we still felt secluded and far away while on the actual grounds. The girls at the front desk were very sweet and even gave us a list of things to do/places to eat around town. This came in handy since every place in Marfa seems to have their own odd schedule of days/times open. My boyfriend and I stayed in the "Spartan Mansion" trailer, which is one of the larger trailers near the back of the property. I never thought such a small space could feel so homey! Not only was it adorable, but it was plenty spacious. The AC, fridge, stove, and indoor toilet worked great throughout our entire stay (4 days, 3 nights). The private outdoor shower made me a little nervous at first, but it turned out to be amazing! The bed was THE most comfortable bed I have ever slept in outside of my own home. The private patio was perfect for starting the morning with a cup of coffee or ending the evening watching the sunset. Being from a big city, we were completely mesmerized by the amount of stars visible and spent hours admiring them on the patio. The ONLY complaint I have is the fact that there is no outside alcohol allowed. They say that beer and wine can be purchased on-site until midnight, which is true, but $15 for a six pack of Shiner is absolutely ridiculous... Although I'm sure those more ballsy than us just sneak in their own booze, lol. Over all, El Cosmico was exactly what I needed and everything I could have wanted and more. I can honestly say that I was extremely sad to leave. I have to agree with a previous reviewer who said that this place is almost spiritual... Everyone needs to experience it in their lifetime. I can't wait to go back!! read more

I've been wanting to come to Marfa and stay at El Cosmico for nearly 8 years - since before it was even built. Can you imagine the expectations? Well, I loved it. Girlfriend loved it, too. We stayed in Little Pinky and it was so sweet, tiny, well decorated, functional. The bed was soft and warm on those cold Texas nights. Loved the little kitchen booth, too, with its glittery pink vinyl. You have to not mind being on top of each other in there - it's tight! The toilet and the shower were outside - it was hard to shower in the wind - too cold. We didn't mind being a little dirty though. There's a nice deck and picnic table to enjoy the sun. El Cosmico is the bomb - thoughtfully conceived and executed. Good coffee in the morning, although we would've liked it ready before 8am but hey, we came from the east coast so we were up at the crack. Nice staff. Endless photo opportunities all around. Comfortable and cool lounge inside and one of the best little stores - full of fun products, t-shirts, books, nibbles, wine and beer, incense, hats, sleeping bags, backpacks, etc etc. Hell, it's great just for the store. It's such a long haul to get to Marfa but it's totally worth it. Oh and PS, we couldn't get Little Pinky for the last night, she was booked, so we stayed in a Safari tent. It was well designed with a comfortable, warm bed but there was a lot of wind and the canvas just flapped and flapped all night. Drove me crazy. Couldn't sleep. Personally, I hated it. Girlfriend, however, loved it, best nights sleep ever - but she's not on Yelp so, oh well. read more

The concept is great but the staff/management are too impressed with themselves. We booked a large RV for three people but only received two sets of towels and kitchen service. When I ask for another, I was told " that is what we have for that room". The puzzled look on my face prompted him to tell me where I could go to purchase another set. I heard a different staff person being equally helpful to another guest. The room had two nice burners, but no microwave. I also noticed that you can easily see into the showers for the camping area. read more

I loved getting to experience this famous experience of glamping here. We stayed in one of the tents. This place just has a laid back and peaceful feel. They had a bar at night inside and a lovely patio to enjoy. They also have hammocks and outdoor showers and toilets for us tent people. I actually really enjoyed my larger outdoor shower. They have dutch tubs for rent. They are $85 for four hours. It would have been a great deal, but when we showed up to get in ours some strangers had helped themselves to ours. They got out and we got it. It was freezing and suppose to be over 100 degrees. Thankful El Cosmico gave us our money back, but sadly that meant we didn't get the experience we were looking forward to. I love the little tool box mini bar that comes in the tent filled with yummies and treats. The staff was sometimes hit or miss, but overall good. This is for sure a funky fun experience. read more

If you're visiting Marfa and want to stay in a luxury vintage trailer, or a teepee, yurt or safari tent, this would be a great place. However, if you are planning to actually camp, in a tent, this place sucks ass. Fist of all, you pay per person, not per camping spot. This is supposedly because you have access to the "facilities", which include toilet, showers and a bath tub, and a communal kitchen area. I managed a luke warm shower, with the hot water turned on full and no cold water. Then, the communal kitchen wasn't accessible because it was being rented out for a private affair. The kicker was the camping area, a flat open area exposed to all the highway noise with a few picnic tables. The noise at night was non stop and horrible. So it was a real disappointment as a camping experience, and definitely wasn't worth the $50 it cost me and my wife and my dog to camp there. They bragged about the coffee they serve in the morning, and rightly so because it was good coffee, but they only start serving it at 8 am! So if you get up early and want a coffee to start your day, you're S.O.L. read more

We came here during the second week of August, so it was HOT. We stayed in the Imperial Palace trailer which was even better than expected....until the air conditioner went out! We were not told in advance but do not leave your air conditioner on for an extended period of time or it will freeze up and you will have NO air! Good thing outside (during the evening) was refreshing. The night desk attendant offered us a bottle of wine as an apology which was very nice! Though the morning staff could not have been more cold natured....too bad. BUT, the BEST part of our journey to MARFA was our River rafting trip with Charlie Angell (Angell Expeditions)! It was hands down the best day of my summer! You've got to meet him, he's so knowledgeable, super interesting & really fun! He does rafting, hiking, & jeep tours. Make sure you check him out!!!
