I feel compelled to write a rather negative review of El Cosmico, having spent $220 per night for a stay in their top-of-the-line Imperial Mansion trailer. If I went to El Cosmico for a camping experience, I might agree with the other YELP reviewers. However, what I was hoping for was a cool/fun Marfa alternative to a standard hotel stay. I admit I expect a certain level of amenities at $220 per night in west Texas, whether that room is in a standard hotel or a vintage Airstream. First, on the plus side, the trailer was roomy, decorated nicely, the bed was comfortable and so were the pillows. There were 2 robes, portable heaters and plenty of storage space for our stuff. However, the main reason I booked the Imperial Mansion trailer and was willing to pay top dollar is that it has its own indoor shower. I believe it is one of only two trailers with that advantage. The bathroom came stocked with four bath towels (that felt as if they'd never met fabric softener) and two small hair products. There were no washcloths, no Kleenex, no soap and a dimmable light that, at its brightest, was dangerous for shaving purposes. (There was a bar of Marfa soap available in the trailer for $5.) The trailer's kitchen contained a few plates, bowls, mugs, drinking glasses, pots and 2 each of knives, forks, spoons. There was a dishtowel but no dishwashing liquid. There were a ton of empty cabinets so lack of space for better stocking of the kitchen is not the issue. Unfortunately, we had some bad weather and looking for something to do (It is well publicized that El Cosmico does not offer cable TV, wifi, etc.) thought to open a pack of playing cards in the trailer - until we noticed they were $10. Also, by the way, please note before booking that El Cosmico does not allow guests to have alcoholic beverages unless they are purchased from El Cosmico (what is the spirit behind that rule?). So, as I said, if I'd thought of our stay as a camping alternative, I may have felt our accommodations luxurious. At $220 per night for the Imperial Mansion, I think El Cosmico could and should make its guests a LOT more comfortable by providing a trailer well-stocked with the amenities of at least a cheap hotel (like soap) - as well as items that make the most of its bath/kitchen facilities (a dinner guest would have to bring their own fork). How about a vintage turntable and some vinyl, some nostalgic board games and a deck of cards you don't have to pay $10 to open? I appreciate that other reviewers experienced something spiritual at El Cosmico. I truly wanted to love it. As it was, I experienced their "we'll provide nothing but bare-bones and force you to purchase what you really need for a comfortable stay from us" as stingy, mercenary and off-putting. read more
