El Continental is a great place to get a delicious Salvadorean meal at an amazingly low price. The pupusas are delicious and the curtido (cole slaw) is yummy. Salvadorian family owned restaurant. I go there for only one thing. Pupusas. You're probably like "Huh?" Pupusas are round semi-flat patties made from Masa (white soft corn meal) filled with either cheese, shredded pork and black bean paste or all 3 ingredients(revueltas). They are cooked on a flat grill until gloden brown w/ cheese oozing out and served w/ shredded spicy cabbage. My friend's Mom introduced me to this delicous treat and I must say El Continental makes a good one. The reason for only 3 stars? The Lainez family food tent in Red Hook during the summer months. This place is not good latin food. I went here with my wife, and we both were dissapointed. She had a fried chicken dish which was individual pieces of chicken deep fried but dry(so unhealthy, but not even tasty to boot), and I got some kind of stew, but mainly they just gave me tons of rice. If you come here expecting a high-end experience you will be disappointed. We expected basic Salvadoran food and were not disappointed at all. The menu is a mix of some Salvadoran and some Mexican items. Pupusas were good as was the Pollo Guijados. They accommodated our group of nine people and although the place can be a little chaotic when crowded - our drinks and food came in good time. The prices were reasonable for the quality and amount of food. We spent less than $130 for nine including beer and wine. read more

this review largely a response to reviews that i think do not represent this restaurant properly. it now has an "A" health grade, & it certainly serves El Salvadorean cuisine. i also found the service exceedingly friendly, although if you don't speak Spanish there can be a language barrier. i have never gotten anything but pupusas & a couple of the sides here (the beans & plantains are great) - & found them to be the closest thing i've found in New York the pupusas i once ate in El Salvador. i recommend the veggie ones with bean/cheese or the pork. this is not a fancy restaurant. the bathrooms ain't great, the atmosphere ain't for a hottt date night, but you're getting what you pay for, & i'm always happy to leave this great neighborhood spot after paying a very small bill after eating delicious pupusas & having very friendly service. note: on a nice spring/summer day that's not too hot, they will open huge floor to ceiling windows if you ask. read more

I was very impressed with this place! I grew up in San Francisco (who boasts the largest Central American population outside of Central America) and SF knows delicious pupusas. One restaurant in particular La Santaneca in SF I consider to be the BEST. I rate all pupuserias from Los Angeles to New York based on La Santaneca. I brought my visiting Salvadorian friend who agrees with me that La Santaneca is the grande dame of pupuseria's and she loved El Continental's pupusa's as well. The curtido was good, not the best, but very good. The customer service was excellent and the staff was very friendly. I suggest pupusas de queso con loroco! If you have never had pupusas, they're from El Salvador and similar to Colombia and Venzuela's arepas but MUCH BETTER! Curtido, which is similar to a tangy coleslaw is chopped, shredded cabbage with onions, spices and lemon juice or vinegar (not sure) sometimes with shredded carrots and such and it accompanies pupusas. Start with 2, put some curtido on top, add a dollop of sour cream and hot sauce and enjoy Salvadorian style! read more

Horrible!!! Ordered friend Pork Chops with Yellow Rice and Bean. The Pork Chops were half cooked and not fully mostly pink inside. I ordered them to go so I had to cook them again until they were done. The been were also half done and also I also had to finish the cooking process. My husband ordered baked chicken and found a plastic item cooked up with the chicken and literally pulled the plastic out of his mouth!!!!! I will NEVER set foot in there again!!! The food is reasonably priced and tasty, I usually get pork and cheese pupusas or chuletas. I've tried the chicken once but it came out too dry. The service is slow and their delivery takes a long time, usually at least 45 min to an hour and I live a short distance away. But you can't beat really affordable price points for great comfort food. Make sure to ask for the green sauce when you order chuletas, sometimes they forget. read more

Solid 3.5 but rounded up to a 4. I had the red snapper and of course the pupusas. OMG, so much food. The snapper was a whole lightly fried fish. Flaky and fresh. Delish. The pork chops were a bit overcooked, hence the 3.5. The mixed pupusas were heavy on the beans for me, but I loved the gooey cheese. Next time, I'll probably stay boring and go with cheese only. I've only had the pupusas and they're awesome. It's super cheap, they even give you free salsa and chips. I recommend you put everything on that pupusa they give out. I like the revueltas the best. I eat here fairly regularly. The food is still relatively cheap, which is why I eat here. The service is good, staff is friendly. I like the pupusas and I like the broiled chicken and pork chops. I have been a little disappointed about some of the other food choices there. The stews, they are kind of sad. So I don't normally stray much from my usual choices. I wish their salads offered more than iceburg lettuce. Usually the pico de gallo that they garnish their plates with is almost orgasmically good. Excellent spice! Very authentic. Good pupusas closer than east New York (although more expensive). Nice location, kind staff. We got the mixed pupusas and the veggie and cheese and a side of beans, also comes with chips and slaw. 4 pupusas were enough for 2 people. Good combo! I'm South American but my childhood babysitter was from El Salvador and always used to make my lunch, plus (little known fact) there has been a sizable Salvadoran population in "south Slope" since the 70s. So I recognize a good pupusa when I see one. Though the Red Hook soccer fields pupusas are typically better ....these are pretty good. They do the trick if it's late or you don't feel like trekking another 25 blocks. Good basic pupusas, though I find their cabbage sometimes has a bitter aftertaste which I never experienced before. NOT a good place to eat-in, it's dingy. I always get mine to go. The best part about this place is if you are a soccer fan....it's the only place anywhere near Park Slope or downtown BK that broadcasts all the CONCACAF league futbol .... so if you're from the Caribbean and you want to see the important games, this is your only option. $10 at the door and cheap, strong drinks .... can't beat that. read more

A simple, honest, sincere little eatery which serves authentic latin American dishes. The food here is not high-end gourmet and this is not a place you will find in any Michelin guide. But *real* Mexicans come here to eat. Because while it may be cheap, it is decent. This is a family restaurant. There's toy machines for the kids, and a jukebox, and TVs showing soccer and latin stations. The chairs and tables are like, fold-up style you find in a church basement. The food is satisfying, heart-warming, home-cooked in preparation. My advice is to try a few menu items to discover your favorite. I've decided that the tacos here are the best bet. They're not fancy or rave-worthy; but they are large and zesty. By the way, there's two dining rooms at el Continental: one which is more cozy/intimate (good for dates) and another larger room for families. There's a small bar (limited drink menu) but all the basics are present. At least 8-or-so bottled beer choices. All in all: el Continental is a refreshing alternative to all the fancy, snooty places which make Park Slope so hoity-toity and uptight. This is a down-at-heels place where you can let your hair down and not 'be on show'. No pretensions. You come in weary and bedraggled straight off your shift and get a little boost. I'd enjoy this scene anytime for a quick bite before a night of bar-hopping. There's even a sofa if you need to put your dogs up. Oh and the staff is made up of 3 cute, cheerful, smiling young latinas. Petite and speedy. Though their English-speaking ability is minimal, they come and check on you throughout the meal to make sure you're happy. Just this in itself, makes a rewarding experience. My family and I had that a terrible visit. To start the service was horrible, request drinks and water although there was four person they only gave us one cup of water. My wife order shrimp al aljio and what she was give was shrimp en salsa. My son ordered a Cuban sandwich, and they added onion, tomatoes, and lettuce which is not suppose to have. All of the food had no taste and for been a Salvadorian restaurant they have no typical dish other than pupusas. Not a place I would recommend. read more

Food was fanominal, I had as a appetizer tamales de elote ( corn tamales), then the steak with onions rice and beans, finished of with a piece of quesadilla ( cheese cake salvadorian style) price was reasonable service was great definitely going back again to try other dishes. I love the open front doors it feels like your eating outside. Bathrooms and decor definitely need work you wouldn't guess that the food was so amazing from the appearance but once your eating you forget about the look. Went there for lunch yesterday.. very good lunch special. I had the beef stew and my friend had the t-bone steak. The beef stew was delicious. The t-bone was like butter absolutely amazing. We also had some mixed popusas, we ate them with the Salvadorian cold slaw very good! Service was good no complaints. Definitely will return again. read more
