As a vegetarian, I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant. I asked about manteca (lard) in the beans, and the staff took it upon themselves to assure me that there was no pork, no beef products in any of the non-meat dishes. They were so kind and understanding, and made great suggestions for vegetarian items. We took a bunch of pupusas, with spinach, loroco (edible flower), beans and mushroom, all with cheese as well. It doesn't say on the menu, but the $3.50 per pupusa actually includes sauce and coleslaw (that's why there's a two pupusas minimum). There's also guacamole, rice, plantains... everything made to order and quite fast. Pay cash or card. Order to go or stay here. There's a TV but the volume is low enough to talk over it. This is a nice place to come and eat. I had come around 12:30pm and was hoping to get a breakfast sandwich as it was on the menu with no time frame for breakfast. Unfortunately they couldn't serve breakfast as it was the afternoon. I got the alfredo fettuccine with chicken. The alfredo was so bland and milky but the pasta was cooked well and the chicken was flavorful. My party also ordered some pupusas which is their specialty. If you come here i would recommend it. I also got an horchata but it wasnt to my liking. It tasted very sweet and grainy. The servixe was quick and she was nice to explain what they had available. The place was half full but not loud. I love the hospitality of this shop. They let me sample their chicken tamale and that was such a kind gesture while waiting for my pupusas. It was a good tamale too which strong masa flavor and on the softer/wetter side of the masa. I also ordered from their hot spread. Got their pork chop with yellow rice, didn't want stream veggies or plantain so I got pasta on the side with refried beans. Their refried beans are a bit different, a bit of a smoky flavor to it. I thought the lunch itself was ok, as the pork chops were a bit dry. The star of the show was definitely the pupusas. There are many flavors on the menu and I think it was top notch delicious. Ordered the mushroom with cheese, and pork and cheese and the fillings were more than most places. The texture of the cheese reminds me of cheese curds from Canada which has the squeaky feel to it. The mushroom flavors were balanced with the cheese. The pork and cheese flavor were balanced. Adding the pickle and sauce only enhanced it even more. Very close to rating this place a 5 but the chicken was a major let down to justify that rating . The baked chicken had no flavor beneath the surface and tasted very under seasoned . I couldn't stomach it . I ended up replacing it with some frozen chicken from my freezer . Everything else on my plate , from the cheese papusas to the yellow rice and beans and fried plantains were excellent ! I even sampled their beef when I ordered and it was excellent ! On a second occasion , I got their meatloaf . I'm certainly no fan of meatloaf , but I can be fair and tell you all that it didn't taste bad but just simply was not my cup of tea . Came here for lunch. The staffs are friendly. The restaurant looks clean. It's a few blocks away from Costco. As soon as you step up to the counter, the staffs tells you the specials of the day. You have a choice of fish, beef stew, baked chicken, white rice or yellow rice, smash beans or lentil beans, and potatoes. There are others items on the menu. We ordered baked chicken with rices n beans, chicken cheese pupusa, and pork n bean pupusa. The chicken looks dry but it was very moist inside. The meat falls of the bone. Visited Gran Villa on my mission to find some delicious pupusas and they did not let me down. I ordered 2 frijoles con queso (beans and cheese) pupusas and they were absolutely out of this world! The price was very fair $5.50 for 2 (or 1 for $3). They packaged my order efficiently which I appreciate. They gave a fair portion of the curtido and salsa in separate containers. They accommodated me with forks, spoons and napkins. Also I ordered a side of white rice and beans & I have to say that their white rice is probably the best I ever had. We asked only about 3 questions when the employee behind the counter asked my bf to tell me "Dile que se ponga las pilas" (meaning, tell her to make up her mind). Keep in mind I am making an effort to order over the phone! How impatient! Additionally, when I did choose what to get, my bf recalls him slamming the food onto the Togo plate. As a first time customer, this is not the type of service you want to receive. We tried the chicken lasagna, it's quite good. Picked up a mixed of various papusas (first time trying). Had the cheese, chicken, and beans. Gooey, cheesy perfection. Had some other sides as well. The pupusas are great here but to my surprise, one day I tried something else besides Pupusas. Their baked chicken with casamiento and a side of plátanos maduros and crema will make you a very happy person. The food is delicious. First time trying this place due to it being highly recommended via word of mouth...Esp. for the pupusas. Being the only Asian in the restaurant, I was worried the staff wouldnt understand me and would only speak Spanish. But to my surprise, not an issue! I observed one waitress serving most of the tables, and two people behind the counter for the hot food selection and the cashier register. There's also a kitchen in the back. I used to work in this area a few years ago but this place wasn't opened yet, otherwise for the $8.95 lunch special (with soda/bottled water) alone, they would have been very popular at my old job. Anyone in this area knows, there isn't much decent eating besides fast food joints and deli stores.... So this place is a gem! And they accept all major credit cards with a $10 minimum. I bought two lunch orders and two desserts just to sample the menu. And also tried the highly recommended pupusas with pernil (pulled pork) and cheese in it. (Which was freshly made on the spot, it came with some spicy Cole slaw like item in a bowl and another bowl of sauce that's tomato based. My companion found it to be savory and a taste of El Salvador, since it's a dish that's within their daily consumption. The lunch orders I got was chicken stew and another chicken dish covered in creamy sauce with mushrooms I think. And the rice came with beans and some veggies. It tasted like a nice home cooked meal, with generous portions that delayed my dinner time lol Personally I found the dine-in portion to be larger than the to-go order, but only by a little. And folks, they make a mean cup of Joe !... The aroma will relax you if you ever get it one on the spot and half and half, and milk was accompanied. They sugar selection was well versed with mutiple options available as well. The flan I ordered is light and sweet, and the texture is very smooth and easily dissolved, kind of like soft tender tofu.... I liked it. The tres leche wasn't the best I've ever had, but it's not bad and def. Better than some others I've tried through out the years and in different neighborhoods. Pupusas and the cabbage salad side have been my favorite food lately. I was hungry and looking for a place I could pass on my way home. This place came up and I ordered 2 pupusas just to try it out. Today I went back for more. The pupusas and the salad were amazing. Place is clean and closed inside during COVID. They have a distance cubes on the floor. Great selection of drinks ok the menu. First, let me apologize for this SUPER LATE review! I visited this restaurant in January and was so busy with work and studying that I hadn't had a chance to write this review. Any way, the food and service was so good that not writing about it has been bothering me. My boyfriend is Salvadorian so we're always looking for the best pupusas in town besides when his mom makes it for us. The pupusas at Gran Villa are so good that we're dying to take his mom to eat there. The cooking here is very authentic. Everything was so flavorful and you can tell it wasn't rushed. The restaurant is very clean and very nice. Not a typical hole in the wall restaurant, although those are he places with the best foods. This place was designed very nice and elegant. My boyfriend felt like he was eating with his family. I'm telling you, if you're looking for great authentic pupusas this is your place! The service here was phenomenal. The staff and owner are very nice people. They really do treat you like family. The owner offered us different dishes just to try on the house! Such a nice guy. Our bill was also really good. Excellent. A caveat: I am not previously familiar with Salvadorian food. But I grew up eating Colombian food and this was both highly reminiscent of and on par with the best Colombian I've had. The pupusas were like big, meat-filled arepas and I loved them. The platano maduro was perfect, not seriously underripe like it is in so many restaurants. The spicy slaw (I can't recall its name unfortunately) was a very nice contrast to the sweetness/saltiness of the other dishes. I enjoyed every bite and look forward to returning. read more

Whenever we visit New York, we primarily eat Chinese food due to being in Flushing. When we headed to Brooklyn (sunset park)I absolutely wanted to eat something different. I love Salvadoran food, but it's not hubby's fave so I don't get to eat it often though it's quite prevalent in Los Angeles. When you walk in they have steam table hot items for quick carry out or seat yourself and a waitress will help you (menu is already on the tables). There was a steady stream of customers, lots of families and kids having brunch (pancakes, eggs and beans, etc) and lunch items as well. They started us with a complimentary chicken tamal. I also ordered platanos maduros with beans and cream. They use red beans here. Hubby ordered a steak, beans and rice dish. The tomato based sauce and peppers were very flavorful, but I didn't care for their rice being so bland. The pupusas were good! But when we ordered more to go the were very slow. This is my go to spot for lunch, and those days where you would like to order in Instead of having to cook. Everything is so well seasoned and VERY tasteful. This is closest I get to my moms home cooking. AUTHENTIC SALVADORAN FOOD. Once you go here you won't go back to the others in town. I've been going to gran villa since they open FREQUENTLY. It is an absolute gem in the most unexpected block on 3 red avenue but worth the trip. Pupusas are spot on like my mommas. Even my parents that are not easily impressed and rarely eat Salvadoran cuisine outside of our home go to gran villa at least every week. Their típico plate is delicious. I steer away from their steam table food. Although they serve huge portions I don't like it. If you're in a rush I guess you can give it a shot. The staff is friendly and patient.
