Pupusas!! It's difficult to find pupusas in Manhattan. This place was the easiest to reach from Manhattan for pupusas. They have tons of variety of pupusas... the curtido is great. The cabbage in one little bowl and the sauce on another. Perfect. They came out hot. They didn't taste like they came from a market. Rather, they tasted home-made. Soft and slightly crunchy. Plenty of flavor. They are quite big too. The filling is plentiful as well. At $3 each, it's a great lunch. Service was good. The timing was about right. The place also looks nice. I had worked up an appetite so had the opportunity to try 3 varieties, including one with loroco, one with zucchini, and one with beans and cheese. As usual, the loroco - that elusive flower which I have never encountered other than on a pupusa menu - was the definite winner, especially when drowned in a combo of the mild salsa and curtido (a bit like coleslaw) served alongside. I was exploring the area and stumbled upon this little gem! I've never had Salvadorian before and this place seems like a local mom and pop shop. There is plenty of seating on the inside and we did not have to wait to be seated. The woman who served us was extremely friendly and let us know that the back of the menu has explanations of the main dishes. I got a chicken and cheese pupusa, the horchata and an el campesino. The pupusa was delicious! We were told pupusas are to Salvadorians what tacos are to Mexicans and what hamburgers are to Americans. They come served with pickled veggies and a tomato sauce - it was delicious! They also had a nice crisp to them. Next time I'm back I will have to try the other flavors. The campesino steak was a little salty, but I think for the portion it is definitely worth it. I took leftovers home and ate it for lunch the next day and it was still good. The horchata also was great too, super flavorful and you could taste all the spices. read more

Had the Pupusas Revueltas and they were so good! They were definitely fresh and were so hot when we picked them up. Couldn't taste much of the pork in the revueltas, tasted mainly like the beans and cheese but honestly they were so good we didn't even care. The Chinola juice is also great! I have been absolutely craving pupusas and made the trek to come here. It was packed at 4 pm on a Saturday, but we were seated right away. Pupusas were amazing (bean and cheese and pork/bean/cheese) and truly I have never had refried beans better than here. I got the plátanos with beans and literally I cannot remember that last time I ate something so delicious. I'll be thinking about those beans for a lifetime aka until the next time I visit. I think this place is underrated. The menu is a bit random but I get the impression if you stick to the Salvadoran food, you won't miss. I can really only speak to the pupusas. Full disclosure I am white. I used to love a pupusa spot in SF and crave them often but had a hard time finding them in nyc. Lucky me I now live close to Bahia! Every time I've been they are super friendly, the pupusas are piping hot and delicious, and I love the curtido on the side! Also HIGHLY recommend the "melon drink". It's cantaloupe juice and I don't even generally like cantaloupe but it's soo good and refreshing. And only $4.50 which would definitely be at least $7 elsewhere. I really enjoyed the pupusas here. I got the bean and cheese, jalapeño and cheese, and wildflower and cheese. They were clearly made to order, the char was spectacular... the fillings were all quite good, although I wish there was some more spices in the actual filling. Bahia was an excellent find for dinner - we were the only non South Americans eating there, which in my book is how I can tell that a place is authentic and delicious. And Bahia did not disappoint in any way. In the back of their menu, they had explanations of certain South American specialties including the drink horchata, made with ground almonds, sesame seeds and rice. Also listed was a drink made with a fruit called maranon, that was sweet with flavors of citrus, Apple but also green pepper. We tried both traditional drinks and they were great. For appetizers, we had wonderful Salvadorian papusas ($2 each! So cheap!), one filled with cheese and a unique wild flower and herb called loroco and the other filled with pork, refried beans and cheese. I had never had a papusa before and WOW these were delicious. Straight out of the oven, the filings were perfectly gooey and melted in the dough pocket. Served with fantastic tomato sauce and pickled cabbage on the side. For entrees, we had the shrimp in spicy sauce served with rice and beans ($15) and the campesino ($18), which was steak with a rice and bean mixture, two pieces of fried bread, sliced avocado and Salvadorian cheese. Huge portions and everything was absolutely delicious. We had no room for dessert. Restaurant is low key and service is good and fast. Can't wait to come back and bring all my friends to try papusas. read more

I never had Salvadoran food before this year, so when I got to Bahia I really did not know what to expect. Besides being so so so affordable, this restaurant is close to the L and G train, has a multitude of options (Salvadoran, American, and Italian) on the menu, and is great for a date or a group dinner or eating alone! The place itself is huge with lots of seating, I have come here twice so far (it was so good, I HAD to go back) and was seated in a matter of seconds. Now if you're like me, Savldoran food was definitely different. It has a lot of vegetarian options thankfuly, but it requires a different set of taste buds, especially when eating a pupusa. I ordered a cheese pupusa, a thick flatbread with cheese and other fillings inside. You eat the pupusa, ideally with your hands, with curtido (which is fermented cabbage relish) and tomato salsa, as you can see in my photo. Eating pupusas reminded me a lot of Indian food because I was able to eat it with my hand and enjoy my meal even more. We also got platanos which were served with a creamy sour cream sauce, elote (which had mustard on it), and horchata. At first, the horchata was watered down, however, after letting the waiter know, he exchanged both our horchatas and made it even better. I was at Bahia for close to 2 hours and I never felt rushed to leave. I felt welcomed and happy to be there in the restaurant's atmosphere. Can't wait to go again! read more
