I had a cheese and onion enchilada and pork tamale. I didn't expect the food to be good but was pleasantly surprised. It was really good. The skinny margarita was amazingly strong, made by my waitress...there's no bartender. I can usually drink two restaurant margaritas but decided against a second one here. We were riding bikes through this town and thought we'd just stop in for a drink and some chips and salsa. We decided to have an early dinner after seeing the huge mouthwatering selection of food. This was our first visit and we were very pleasantly surprised. This being the Long Beach peninsula we had not given the thought of Mexican food much hope. Wanting a change for the evening we pulled in to El Compadre to give it a shot. The number of cars in the parking lot was a good sign for off season on the "fun beach ". We were seated quickly and provided with the requisite chips and salsa. Our orders were taken quickly and refresh of salsa was provided without our asking. My boyfriend and I ate dinner at El Compadre last night. The food was fine, standard Americanized Mexican food, which is what we were expecting, whatever. Our service was great, our waitress was very helpful and sweet. Ummm..... Fast forward to 2am, where my beau and I are forced to make some difficult decisions. We have since been taking turns in the restroom exploding from both ends. Dude. I'm pretty pissed that I blew $50 on dinner and have to cut short our weekend at the beach just to get sick. We come here every time we visit Long beach which is 6 per year. We got in late at 9pm on Friday March 2nd. I ordered a plate with carne asada but wasn't beef it was what is call chicken jerky, it's dried out bad,being in hour before closing I didn't want to make waves so i ate around it. My wife had Chicken Chimichonga, she saves it for last but the bite she ate tasted like fish, smelled like fish but there was chicken for the filling. Our first weekend without kids in 2yrs and my my wife went through 1.5 rolls of TP, stopped dozen times having to go, then gave up having anything close to a quality time alone. That's all she and food poisoning crippled her still today its Monday March 5th. We have loved this place for the 9 yrs we been hoing,it's been hit n missed but this takes the cake. Randomly decided to go here because we saw one of the billboards while we were spending the weekend in Long Beach. My husband had carne asada and enjoyed it, though it was nothing special. Just typical carne asada, but could have used some more seasonings. I had the chicken enchilada and liked it. The refried beans could have been better, but I still ate them. The worst restaurant I have ever been to. We were visiting Long Beach and went for dinner here. It wasn't super busy and it took a good 15/20 minutes for a waitress to even acknowledge we were there. I ordered a lemon drop, received the smallest glass with what they call a lemon drop. It was watered down, tasted like lemon and water. I sent the drink back and a different waitress made the drink in a different glass. This second drink was so incredibly strong with alcohol I couldn't even drink it. So I asked the waitress to return that drink as well. She gets pissed, grabs the drink and proceeds to tell me that's how it's made very rudely and stomps off. So onto dinner..... I ordered a taco salad in a tostada shell. I received the salad on a dinner plate and the shell is sitting in some kind of liquid and the shell is soaking wet. Never have I received a taco salad with a shell that's wet at the bottom?? Will NEVER dine here again. If I could give negative stars I would. read more

We were hungry so decided to try this place without YELPing it. BIG mistake. I really wish we'd looked around a little more before we were finally seated. Our server was lackluster and disinterested. The chips had a funny taste and the salsa was basically red water with a few finely chopped green onions floating around. Then I started looking around. This place is filthy. Really filthy. I know being by the ocean brings maintenance issues with rust and the need to paint but that shouldn't prevent you from cleaning your restaurant. The walls are spattered with food, the rugs are filthy, and the place is just generally grimy. Someone had even written something on the wall across from us with what looked like refried beans. The baseboards have a black line of dirt halfway up and the bottom of the door leading to the kitchen is black with dirt. If they're that complacent about cleaning the public areas, how dirty is the kitchen? We decided to use caution and ordered their super nachos and asked them to add green onions. We got a really unappetizing glob of greasy beans, old tasting chips smothered in cheese. Instead of sprinkling the top with the green onions when they added the chopped tomatoes, they added those under the cheese and beans before they put it under the broiler so they were soggy and gross. Even the guacamole tasted like the frozen stuff and not freshly made. For drinks we got water because the bar area looked especially gross. It arrived warm with no ice. We decided to try bottled Cokes to becsafe. They cost a whopping $4.75 each and were room temperature. The final blow? We took a few of the chips out to our dogs who will eat anything and especially love tortilla chips. Both our dogs sniffed them then refused to eat them. When your dog that thinks cat poop is a delicacy refuses to eat their tortilla chips, listen to her and avoid this place. Why two stars instead of one? They used real cheese and we only got really bad heartburn and not food poisoning. read more

I tried to be reasonable in my expectations - I thought that it was just the kind of Tex-Mex Americanized stuff that typified this sort of place 30 years ago. But it's also just bland -- I'm not sure a chile or tomatillo has been seen within 100 miles of this place and my son's burrito was drowning in a greasy sauce. read more

Not sure about the other reviewer, but we loved this place! Fresh tortilla chips with salsa started our table. We had a steak fajita and (believe it or not) a grilled game hen Mexican style. Both were richly flavored and delicious. I've had a lot of food in both Mexico and elsewhere and this was very good and similarly authentic. The grilled fresh jalapeno on my plate was so hot a tiny bite was all I could handle. Great service, large margaritas and an excellent experience! It makes my mouth water to think about it- yum! We ate here about a year ago and the food was just okay,but we gave it another try a few days ago. What a drastic change. I had an appetizer plate that came with nachos, a taquita, and a cheese quesadilla. It was fantastic. My husband had the beef burrito and enchilada and said it was very tasty. The outside of this little restaurant is deceiving and we found it to have great atmosphere on the inside. Bright and cheery traditional Mexican decor and it seemed pretty clean for an older establishment. The food is your typical American Mexican fare and the prices seemed reasonable. Went there for dinner last night.(5/15/19) Food was excellent but the service was lacking. The bad part was when I was paying the bill, $81.04, the heavy set waitress, gave me change for a $100.00 bill. She gave me nine dollars. I said that doesn't look right. Right away, she handed me two fives and said that she was low on 10 dollar bills. She didn't count what she gave me in change and knew right away that I was short $10.00. Atmosphere is authentic Mexican with colorful decor grande sized beverages but the food is Americanized with watered down salsa, minimal veggies, too much cheese and too much sauce on most dishes. Staff is really friendly and fast as long as they are not swamped, but that goes for most of town when they are very busy.
