Having spent a few days at Cape Disappointment State Park just 15 minutes up the road, this was one of the few modern, semi-upscale (not a dive) restaurants on the peninsula as far as I could tell. A bit of a dive, inside and out, the place could use a complete remodel or a deep cleaning at the very least. The prices are a bit on the high side for Mexican, but the service was decent. Fortunately, the chips and salsa were free because the chips were of the cheap, store-bought variety and, likely, the salsa was as well. We also added a side of guacamole ($5.25), probably the best value on the menu and not bad, having been properly seasoned and with hardly any of the less expensive tomato filler most places use. I had the #2 Combo, a taco, enchilada, and tostada with rice and beans ($11.95). The taco came with picadillo (shredded beef) on a store-bought, pre-fab taco shell that fell apart upon first bite because of the not-so-well drained meat and the cheap shell. If you know me, my biggest pet peeve at a Mexican restaurant is store bought chips and pre-fab taco shells, a sure sign of mediocre quality. The cheese and onion enchilada was actually quite good and the sauce tasty, I will give them that. But the tostada was a nightmare, coming on a, you guessed it, pre-fab tostada shell that was so soggy by the time I got to it that I could only eat it with a fork. I asked for "all beans, no rice", but I got the rice anyway. The refried beans were actually quite tasty. My wife ordered a Cheese Quesadilla ($8.95), coming with a large dollup of guacamole, sour cream and diced tomatoes. A bit pricey for a tortilla filled with cheese, but this was one of the biggest quesadillas I have ever seen with loads o' melted cheese inside a huge flour tortilla. I'm awarding El Compadre a bonus green star for using earth friendly materials in their take home packages, and in their to-go meals. I shocked to see my to go meal nicely prepared on a foil-lined paper plate and covered in foil. If you dine-in and ask for a take home box its cardboard. In room dining is reuseable service ware. Some room for improvement by eliminating plastic straws, but otherwise, bravo, El Compadre! Friendly service, reasonable prices, good food, open longer hours than other eateries. We were quickly seated at one of the cute, kitschy-decor brightly painted tables, and a bowl of warm tortilla chips and salsa quickly arrived. We just ordered water but noted the margaritas were priced lower than 'the city'. The salsa wasnt much to write about. I ordered the Carne Asada y mas (the mas being chile relleno), wife had the carne asada burrito. Mine came with soft corn tortillas, i sliced up the beef and loaded up the guacamole, etc. on top - I asked the waitress for Tapatio, and perhaps reading my mind she asked if i'd like to try their in-house habanero sauce to which I enthusiastically said yes - she brought a small bowl and let me know that 'they normally require me to sign a waiver' with a wink; YUMMY hot delight, highly recommend that sauce. The beef was VERY well done and pretty tough, i almost brought the rating down to 3 stars for that, but the chile relleno was outstanding and I loved the seared jalapeno and everything else (beans and rice). Portion sizes were good, not huge. Wife liked her burrito. Prices was about right compared to 'the city'. Service was swift, courteous, water glasses kept full, everything appeared clean. I'd recommend this place, and will be back. They appeared to be open fairly late (9pm), which is a good thing to remember in a town that pretty much shutters its doors early. read more

Yelp designates a three-star rating as "OK" and that's what El Compadre was for us, OK. The good: Cheese enchiladas were pretty okay and the portion size was generous. The server was very attentive. Bonus points for offering pinto beans as an option for vegetarians (instead of the non-vegetarian frijoles). The bad: The chips were stale. The guacamole was thin and a bit brown. The price for the size of the portion we received, $5.95, was pretty shocking. The blended margaritas (me and my companion each had one, different flavors) had no detectable alcohol in them. As for the atmosphere . . . . The word "dated" comes to mind. The place could definitely use a facelift and an upgrade. All in all, our experience here was . . . . OK. read more

This place has, by far, the best Mexican food in the Pacific Northwest. Their Chile Verde is beyond compare but everything on the menu is fantastic. We are locals and thought we'd give it a try. I ordered a combo. The chile relleno was horrible - the pepper was slimy, not roasted, skinned or de-seeded. The cheese enchiladas were described as having cheese and onions-no onions. Everything was drowning in a tasteless sauce covered with way too much melted cheese.The blended Margarita was lacking the tequila and lime. The only good thing was the plain pintos. Service: Basic minimal. Took our order, chips/salsa arrived, after a long wait, Margarita arrived, more long wait, then food, then check. No check in to see how things were with us or if we needed anything during our meal. Oh and way overpriced for the lack of quality. So now I know to never bring out of town friends here. Where to start. My friend and I were in town for the weekend and we love mexican so we came in last Saturday for a late lunch/early dinner. We have a tradition of 1 shot of patron, and this time was no different. Except it was NOT Patron. Like didn't even taste the same, and my friend agreed. I asked the male server if it was Patron amd he said yes and immediately got defensive and said he welcome show me the bottle. We definitely felt another grade of lesser tequila was poured into the Patron, it even had a yellow tint. Anyways. While we waited for our food we noticed dead fly's in the windows, very dirty floors and booths. Bathroom wasn't very clean either. Food was hardly edible. We ordered chicken taquitos that tastes like fish, I assume due to dirty frying oil. Also ordered the mexican pizza. My friend swears the ground beef was bad. We left almost all our food and left. It was a definite culture shock skimming the menu and not coming across one vegetarian option. Where am I? - Why does everything have meat in it? I ordered the Fajita Burrito sans meat, cheese, and sour cream. It was delicious: mushrooms, onions, bell pepper, beans, & rice. We got a lot of food for a decent price. The strawberry daiquiri was good, but our server didn't understand why I didn't want whipped cream, so we ended up paying for a whole other one (sans whipped cream). Will I return? Our food was on point- having genuine and accurate flavors that we all hope to find in semi-authentic Mexican food. I tend to like it a bit hot and the waitress picked up on that and offered me a green colored hot sauce, and issued the 'it's got some bite' type of warning. Wow! This stuff had a pleasant (those that don't like spice, don't even think about it!) amount of fire, But!!! It had GREAT flavor. It was initially for the chips while we waited for the meal, but I ended up pouring it on my asada and corn tortillas as well. If you like a bit 'o fire with some nice flavor, give this a shot. The waitress said they make it fresh in house. We honestly didn't have real high expectations for a Mexican Restaurant at the beach, but we were clearly mistaken. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food, this isn't the place for you. Their guacamole tastes like it's made from a bland powder mix. Their Flautas bare no resemblance to Mexican Flautas: they are neither flute shaped nor crispy. I recommend crossing the bridge into Astoria, where you can happily dine at La Cabaña de Raya, or El Tapatio, or Plaza Jalisco Mexican Restaurant. These restaurants are sooo worth the drive. I was craving some Mexican food for supper when Steve and I made a recent trip to Astoria and Long Beach. I had a taste of what I was looking for in Astoria and was wanting more Mexican by the end of the evening. In this case the some of the menu items were hit and miss. I had a combination plate with a cheese enchilada and a chile relleno. The cheese enchilada in of itself was not bad but the chile relleno was fairly bland. Instead of tasting any hint of a chile the overwhelming flavor was a bunch of cheese. All in all just kind of blah. Steve had pretty the same thing except in this case he had a bean tostada. I only had a taste of it and liked it but apparently didn't eat enough of it because in the end he said he wasn't really impressed with it. The chips and salsa was ok but not very spicy. So all in all a very unspicy Mexican meal for both of us which to me kind of defeats the purpose of getting Mexican food. read more
