My husband had the carne asada tacos and said they exceeded expectations and were especially nice with the guacamole and sour cream from my plate (lol he ordered a la cart and I got a plate but don't like either). I had the garlic shrimp which was equally yummy. The flour tortillas with the shrimp, rice, and beans, all together inside was a great way to eat it. Only drawback is they do not serve any alcohol. They messed up my 7-year-old's order. We asked for a cheese quesadilla with no meat. The waitress asked, "Just cheese?" I confirmed, "Yes, just cheese. My daughter is picky and doesn't want anything else on her quesadilla." Her quesadilla was stuffed full of shredded chicken with a glop of guacamole, sour cream, and tomatoes. The drinks were its only saving grace. The pork chop we ordered as dry as bones. I think pork jerky is juicer. Carne asada tacos were tough and dry as well. Lenuga tacos were tender but flavorless. Also the service was slow and inattentive. If you're looking for crappy Mexican food in a small touristy town, then this is the place for you. As a restaurant in Long Beach, this is 4 stars for me because of their hours and menu, but outside Long Beach, it's more like 3 stars for the quality when compared to other Mexican and non-Mexican restaurants with the same items. We came here twice during our stay in Long Beach because El Mar was always open and has a lot of options to choose from. Their menu is huge and even includes American / western food items like burgers, fish and chips, hot dogs, chicken strips, breakfast, etc. We got enchiladas on the first day. There's nothing too special or bad about them, except the portions (enchiladas, rice, beans, and side veggies - basically everything) are smaller than some other Mexican restaurants I've been to. The quality / taste was mediocre, so I wouldn't order those again. The next day, we got the flautas, which were much better and even bigger / more in quantity than the enchiladas (just less rice, beans, and salad). It also came with guacamole for no extra charge. I also appreciated that the staff was always willing to refill our chips and salsa. Plus, on the second day, they offered us a green salsa that was very tasty. Their red salsa isn't too bad either, since I would drink it. However, the drinks weren't that strong alcohol-wise (paloma and cadillac margarita), but that's standard for most Mexican restaurants or any restaurants in general. I also didn't pay attention to their special menu items above the cash register (which I regret), so next time I would want to try the birria ramen, quesa-birria, etc. read more

Absolutely THE BEST Mexican food I've ever tasted. We just got back from the Mexican pacific coast and had many delicious meals, but "El Mar" tops them all. Their ingredients, seasonings, light flaky & savory tortilla wrapped burritos and tacquitos were incredibly flavorful and mouthwatering delicious! The owner and staff are extremely kind professional and polite with "next level" outstanding customer service. I can't wait to come back to Long Beach and indulge in more of their culinary excellence. We moved to Long Beach six months ago and I finally tried this place. It's just off the main drag in downtown Long Beach. I should mention we've lived in the American Southwest and have experienced top-shelf Mexican food many times, so our expectations are up there. I noticed several other reviews for this place said things like, "Not bad for being on the Peninsula, but there's a lot better food elsewhere." As if those of us who live here should not expect much. El Mar was a big disappointment. My shrimp tacos had half the ingredient load compared with a promo photo on the wall (fewer shrimp, no chopped tomatoes, no avocado). Not a great value at $6 each. The shrimp were overcooked, rubbery, and lacked flavor/seasoning. The little mini-cup of green sauce that came with each taco was weak and bland. The red salsa served with my chips as a starter was watery and lacked substance. This place has a barebones atmosphere and decor. I noticed that several booth seats had tears that were repaired with black tape. My server dropped off a menu and then got on the phone making personal calls. I waited but finally had to go up to the register to order. Fortunately, there's good Mexican food with a cheerful, family-run atmosphere and great service across the river in Astoria (Oregon). I think we'll make the trip over there if we get the urge for Mexican food going forward. read more

This is some of the best carne asada I ever had. The steak is tender and well-seasoned, with just right ratio of fat to meat. So many places overcook carne asada to point of beef jerky. Theirs is spot on. The tamale has good flavors and texture. The seafood cocktail is refreshing with plenty of avocado and plump shrimps. The fish taco is perfectly cooked and nice and crispy on the outside. It just needs a little more seasoning. They do seem to have a problem with washing dishes. Our sodas came in cans, not glasses. We gave El Mar a shot. Really wanted to enjoy it. But the food just wasn't that great. I'll start with positives: The $10 margarita was a good pour. You can tell there's actually tequila in there. The refried beans were pretty good. The beef chimichanga was good; real meat, seasoned well, crispy. But everything else was sub-par. The enchilada on one of our plates seemed to be drenched in a sauce that could best be described as Tomato Soup. The rice was rice, nothing special. I had the butter-filled, bacon-wrapped shrimp. The were slightly overcooked, too crunchy. So that was disappointing. The other thing that was just... weird: One of our combo plates was wrong. Before we started to eat, we called the waitress over. She had delivered our meal to a table next to us, and their meal to us. They realized it too, so our waitress just 'swapped' the two plates between the tables. We ordered two entrees, both enchiladas. The food was great! I really loved the Spanish rice. In many restaurants, the Spanish style rice is dry and lacks flavor. This restaurant serves rice the the way I like; it's well seasoned, flavorful, and it isn't dry. The beans were great too. She went to grab bottled water and my brother said tap water is fine. She said they can't serve the tap water ?!?! I asked why not at which time she said she doesn't understand English. After moving here from our foodie hometown of Portland, we thought we were in a culinary desert, but then we found El Mar. Not only is it our favorite Mexican restaurant in the area, it's our favorite restaurant, period. This assessment after only eating their takeout once, but that's how good it was -- the closest thing to visiting our home away from home in southern Mexico. The staff accommodated a request for the seafood enchiladas prepared in a white sauce (sour cream and cheese), although it's not on the menu, after he kindly explained to us that "suizas" is not made with sour cream. They were awesome. I had the carne asada, which tasted like it came off the barbecue only moments before, complete with a grilled cebollita, which I love, and a grilled jalapeno, which I also love but cannot eat without getting the hiccups (getting old is so sad). Cleaned our plates, beans, rice and homemade guacamole, including the entire bag of complemetary homemade chips with delicious salsas. Can't wait for our next meal from there! read more

The food is pretty good. Both times we went we didn't get exactly what we ordered. On our second time ordering they literally touched some lettuce with sour cream and that's what we got along with maybe a teaspoon of guacamole. The gal working there stopped taking most orders at 7:15, but let some people order after. It was interesting to watch. I'm not sure how she chose who was allowed to still order. Their hours are until 8, but that is when you're asked to leave. Get there early if you want to eat. read more

Then the gentleman with the original attitude came over and asked us what we were asking for, but by then we had already decided to take our business elsewhere.
