This restaurant up charges depending on the fish you choose and the waiter doesn't even tell you until you see the bill, then she assumes you knew. The customer needs to be informed and then make a decision, not be tricked. Another issue is the 17% mandatory tip for a party of 5, (3 adults, 2 kids). We spent $238 and didn't have dessert or coffee. Very overpriced! We had been here in the past but it's so expensive now that it's really not worth it with all the HIDDEN UP CHARGES!. Service was mediocre as well and the restaurant had only 3 tables. By the way, the waiter informed us that they only gets 15% of the tip, the rest is allocated elsewhere but not to the employees. After getting newly inked, we were looking for a quick bite to eat in the area being that we had to catch a flight within the hour. Their standard ceviches (start at $15) is made with swai (cheapest fish available), so they try to upsell you (hard) to their specialty ceviches made with corvina (an extra $6). The food is good. But we were told that "ceviches are for appetizers, not for a proper lunch" and that was super annoying and rude, quite frankly. We had already ordered several appetizers, so I'm not sure what the problem was. Gratuity was added at 17%. Wouldn't return. read more

For our last visit to el Chaman we arrive at a weird, very early time, at around 6:00 pm after running some errands and the place was empty! we were the only customers so I thought "great, now our food is gonna taste like crap" however to my surprise the food was delicious, our server Alejandro was very helpful assisting us with the menu and his recommendations were spot-on! In my humble opinion they make the best risotto in Miami. My favorite dish there is the risotto with lamb chops. I just hate when I have to give reviews like this one. Lets start by saying that the restaurant is very nicely decorated, even though it has a casual atmosphere its a classic/traditional restaurant with gourmet variation in their menu. We went on a Saturday evening to have lunch, the restaurant was kind of empty so we were seated right away, our waitress was kind of nice until the episode im about to explain in a few..My husband ordered Ceviche and Arroz Chaufa and I ordered the Risotto with Lomo Salvaje, I think its called. The Ceviche arrived only after a couple of minutes so I just sat there waiting for my food for a long time, the Ceviche was good nothing special, it was basic, we've had better in other restaurants; halfway through my husbands plate my food arrived, the Rissoto was really good and the quality of the Lomo was great, tender and juicy, it was the only thing that was really good out of all the things we ordered, and the main reason why im ratting this experience with 3 stars; later on when they brought the Arroz Chaufa, my husband upon the first bite noticed that it tasted weird, so he told me that the rice was spoiled and it tasted like smoke, so he asked me to try it...as soon as I put it in my mouth i noticed it tasted like Propaine Gas and smoke, and not fresh like maybe that it was a left over rice and they had refried it, it was HORRIBLE, also very dry (and lets point out there is a difference between smoked and tasting like smoke)... we called the waitress and told her that the rice was not good, she took it to the back with no problem and later came back and started giving us attitude. She came back to our table and told us that the "Chef" said that that's the way its suppose to taste because of the way the rice is fried in the Wok, I told her that i understood but the rice was not good, i guess she got upset and took it personal and with a nasty attitude told us again that that is the way is suppose to taste, smoked, because how its made...making gestures like we didn't know what we where talking about or have never tasted Chaufa Rice before. At that point we were not going to argue with her since she clearly was defending the restaurant/chef position not the consumers... so we just said OK and left it like that, she then came back and told us if you like we wont charge you for it...but the sad part is that they never offer to make another one or offer a different kind of dish instead, or admit that the disgrace of Chaufa Rice was not done properly, or most simple and ethical APOLOGIZE!!! for the inconvenience. We just chilled and without getting mad or anything, all cool told each other don't worry will just Yelp when we get home LOL. So here is an example of an arrogant Chef and Rude staff that don't care about the quality of their food and wont admit when something comes bad out of their kitchen...Good Luck to them, because i wont be spending my money again on their Restaurant. read more

I'm really confused by others ratings of this place. I went to El Chaman after a long bike ride through the Everglades, in retrospect I should have checked the dress code. Nonetheless, we were starving and our need for Peruvian along with some promising yelp reviews brought us here. I get that we were underdressed, but the hostess and everyone else stared at us like we were aliens. Anyway the evening did not get better. The service was horrible at best, the ceviche did not taste fresh and the sauce tasted like tobasco. To make matters worst, the lomo saltado (filet mignon) was over cooked dry and flavorless. Found this restaurant by chance and have fallen in loooove!! The food presentation is beautiful and the taste even better. I tried their Chupe de Camarones (a small order of soup which was only $6.00) expecting an average looking dish but when the waitress brought my soup I was amazed. On top was a perfectly cooked sunny side up egg which I was not expecting at all but pleasantly added to the delicious flavor. The soup had ample shrimp and could be a meal on it's own. The Ceviche is fabulously fresh and spiced to taste! Their Arroz con Marisco (rice with seafood) was just as mouth watering and fresh. The atmosphere is relaxed, pleasantly lit and elegant. Although I can't say their ceviche mixto is as good as La Perla's, this place deserves the 5 star because of their exceptional quality, creativity, and perfection in their dishes. I was in the area because I had a nearby meeting to attend on a Saturday afternoon. I decided to stop to see an old friend and have lunch. I had one of the specials which included a delicious mushroom risotto base. The risotto was topped with an array of Perfectly prepared seafood; scallops, mahi filet, lobster tail, shrimp and mussels. To say it was delicious doesn't do it justice. The sauce that accompanied it was delectable. Being the foodie that I am, I took pictures and sent them to my other foodie friends immediately. I love Peruvian food, so when this place came up on my radar, I locked in and fired away. :) El Chaman is located in a pretty desolate strip mall, so from the outside you wouldn't think much of it. In my experience, Peruvian restaurants are not concerned with aesthetics, but El Chaman is. Once you get in, you are treated to a very well furnished restaurant. They have changed the layout quite a few times since opening, but it looks great. There is a nice bar, booths, and a stage for live music here. Peruvian paintings and artwork are placed all around the walls with Peruvian air flute music in the background. They offer the classic dishes you would expect such as ceviche, arroz chifa, seco, lomo saltado, tallarines verdes, and much more. The Chicha morada here is quite good too. For appetizer, I love their anticuchos. If you have never had it before, get it here. It is cow heart, seasoned in a savory spice served with choclo (big corn) and roasted potato. For the squeamish, no need to worry - it tastes just like steak. Most people I bring here I tell them afterwards and they are none the wiser. The lomo saltado is my favorite dish here. It is not the classic style, but very good nonetheless. Stir fry filet cooked with aji, soy sauce, onions, tomatoes, French fries, and rice. It is an easy dish to get anyone to try and fall in love with. The chicken fried rice is also wonderful, just be prepared for a mountain of food. Seriously, there is enough rice and chicken for two people easily, as it is served in a wooden bamboo dish - which adds the cool factor in my book, Oddly enough, I haven't had dessert here yet (probably because I'm too full from all the food). But I would love to try the lucuma flan or ice cream. Overall, a solid choice for an upscale Peruvian meal and definitely worth the visit. read more

Not sure what happened to El Chaman... I used to come here sparingly but always had amazing food. My Ceviches and Jalea's were always consistent and DELICIOUS Not to mention the fresh and amazing specials i once used to eat here and always reccomend to friends and family. But as of a couple of months, the quality of this place is really lacking what it once was. Bland flavorless jaleas, too acidic or too bland ceviche, specials that have been re-run constantly and arent even good to begin with. I really do not recommend this place anymore. it is no longer worth the price.
