But where this restaurant shines is the food. Some of the best Mexican food I've had. If I ever go back through Yale OK I will stop back and have a bite here at Chavas

The logos once proudly announced the owner's name and services. Essential then, now ancient. Sad. We imagined what the town was like, when oil was life in Oklahoma. The buildings then housed businesses that employed many, put food on the table and provided opportunities for several generations. Yale, a living ghost town now. The massive building has a Spanish architectural hint and colors that suggests, Mexican food can be found here. It is now Chava's. It covers almost a city block. This place probably rocked in the old days. The parking lot being full of oilfield worker's trucks at noon during the week and family cars on the weekend. Now well worn, the neglected exterior matches the town; weeds, the structures only landscaping. Today, the entire declining population of Yale could probably fit in the building. The parking lot was vacant when we arrived. The restaurant survives, thanks to dedicated locals and with the help of hungry sports fans headed to Stillwater for the Saturday game. Currently its ranking as the "Best Mexican Food in Yale" is unchallenged. The food is served on hot plates, properly prepared and good portions. The service is friendly and the restaurant is relatively clean, but noticeably warn. We ordered one of the combination plates, a relleno and a beef enchilada. On their own both were good; but the red sauce on the meal didn't work. Closer in taste to marinara spaghetti sauce than anything Mexican. The salsa served with the chips was similar in taste. Very mild, oregano flavor prominent. When we ordered, the young man offered three options: white queso, yellow queso or red sauce. We asked about the red sauce. He described it as "like chili. Nope, it is more like spaghetti sauce. The beans and rice were good. Underneath the sauce, was a nice big, fresh poblano, filled with cheese, battered and fried, accompanied with a mildly seasoned, beef filled enchilada. My recommendation, order queso on anything that comes with a sauce. It will be very mild, but better than the spaghetti sauce. If you are a person that finds a Tic Tac to be a little too spicy; you'll love the mild salsa.

If you do, you'll know why it has over 1000 Google reviews and why so many people like it. I was traveling with a group of friends through this area and we didn't have much time to eat. We were looking for something better than fast casual, but also not a sit down place that would take 20 minutes to make our food. Los Potros hit that fine line and I was extremely satisfied. Their menu wasn't extremely long and they had multiple options for select food preferences. Service was incredible with very friendly staff who were very attentive. Plus you get complimentary Chips and Salsa which isn't always offered in every Mexican Restaurant. I ended up getting a Molcajete which was beyond incredible. The Molcajete was packed with Steak, Chicken, Shrimp and Fajita Veggies. The portion size was HUGE. Enough for 2-3 meals for myself and I eat decently large meals. Whether you're traveling and passing through or you live near this area, Los Potros is worth the stop. You'll find great value for some incredible food and you won't leave disappointed.

They advertise as authentic Mexican and they are, with what I would call a little TexMex added in here and there. It was and excellent find for us. Two of the best plates of Mexican food that we have had, in small town Oklahoma restaurants. Nothing bland from the salsa to the beans, excellent spicy flavors. My wife had the Fried Tamales. Two fried until golden brown, topped with tomatillo salsa verde and queso blanco, garnished with diced tomatoes and cilantro. Served with rice and beans. For me the Papa Poblano. It was a different presentation of my favorite Mexican food items. An amazing combination of a deep-fried cheese filled Chile Relleno rolled up in a slab of fajita beef, topped with sauteed shrimp in a creamy mushroom chipotle sauce, garnished with diced tomatoes and cilantro. It is difficult to explain how delicious this combination was. The creamy cheesy spicy chipotle sauce made the meal. On the side, the perfect charro beans, topped with fresh chopped jalapeno, tomato and onion. These 5-star meals you have to try. They favor TexMex in presentation and spiciness. A great Mexican restaurant, attractive décor, comfortable chairs and booths, with small town friendly service. Beer and Tequila is available. Their menu can be found online.

I stopped at Mariachi for lunch while my wife enjoyed a casino in Perry. The food left me desperate to make a return visit ASAP. I can't vouch for the salsa, I didn't try it. But instead asked if they had a hotter salsa. It was remarkable! Very well balanced with spices, not just made by adding chiles de arbol to a house salsa. I could taste the individual flavors layered within the salsa and while it was spicy it wasn't painfully so. Now, on to the best part: Jacque Pepin said the best way to test a French chefs skills was to ask for an omelet- a simple dish very challenging to deliver flawlessly. I think the same is true in Mexican cuisine- order enchiladas and if they are seasoned, filled and sauced to perfection you can trust about anything on the menu. Mariachi's enchiladas picosas (spicy enchiladas) are a perfect example. Filled with slow roasted & shredded chuck roast, flawlessly seasoned and then topped with a memorable spicy red sauce that, while hotter than my wife likes, was absolute perfection. Served with rice and beans, it was a delightful meal. Service was good, decor as expected of a small Mexican restaurant in a small Oklahoma town, and the food.....you will be impressed!
