The restaurant is hidden on a side street in Perkins. It is not a recent cartel startup. The waitress said El Mexicano had been in business for over 15 years. They advertise as authentic Mexican and they are, with what I would call a little TexMex added in here and there. It was and excellent find for us. Two of the best plates of Mexican food that we have had, in small town Oklahoma restaurants. Nothing bland from the salsa to the beans, excellent spicy flavors. My wife had the Fried Tamales. Two fried until golden brown, topped with tomatillo salsa verde and queso blanco, garnished with diced tomatoes and cilantro. Served with rice and beans. For me the Papa Poblano. It was a different presentation of my favorite Mexican food items. An amazing combination of a deep-fried cheese filled Chile Relleno rolled up in a slab of fajita beef, topped with sauteed shrimp in a creamy mushroom chipotle sauce, garnished with diced tomatoes and cilantro. It is difficult to explain how delicious this combination was. The creamy cheesy spicy chipotle sauce made the meal. On the side, the perfect charro beans, topped with fresh chopped jalapeno, tomato and onion. These 5-star meals you have to try. They favor TexMex in presentation and spiciness. This is the best Mexican restaurant in Stillwater and Perkins area. They have great salsa and a hot salsa version too. I like the chili rellenos but they have many good dishes. The servers are nice and efficient. I recommend El Mexicano! read more

Amazing service and great food. If you are looking for real Mexican and not the usual Tex-mex/ok-mex then this is the place for you. I had chicken enchiladas and they were so juicy and tender. A lot of times the chicken is dry but this wasn't even close. I will definitely be back. The drive from Stillwater is worth it. read more

We eating at El Mexicano regularly. My husband's favorite is the Ranchera Enchiladas with avocado slices and cabbage shreds. I enjoy their chicken fajitas. Delicious. Additionally, their rice is so good. Of all our area Mexican restaurants (a lot!) it is the best. One thing: chips are usually a bit tough but salsa is good. read more

The food was delish however some of the worse service ever!!!! We waited by the front door to be seated for close to 15 minutes they were not busy also! Finally got seated our waitress was extremely rude and short. Anything we ask for she acted like we completely put her out. No refills! After waiting 15 minutes after finishing food her walking by numerous times looking at our table seeing we were done she finally came by and said do y'all need something??? I said yes we're finished and would like to order desert and could I possibly get a refil. She said nothing stormed off a few minutes later came back and slammed my to go tea on the table and walked away. Did the same thing with desert! Ok went on Cinco De Mayo and even though it was crazy busy and super crowded, this is the best place in Stillwater/Perkins area! Food was great, and actually authentic vs the normal Tex-Mex we usually find. All three of us enjoyed our meals, and the service was outstanding! I'm so glad I took the chance and drove here! YUMMY! I asked the waitress for her too 3 recommendations and chose the Chile Rellenos. Changed out the sauce to a white queso and skipped the beans. Also, added a side of pico. Chips are good. Salsa and queso are served when you get to the table. Tea was fresh. Service on point. Will definitely try it again next time I'm in the area. read more

Wonderful Fresh Salsa During our trip to OK, we ate at 4 different Mexican restaurants and this place in the small town of Perkins was one of the best! The fresh salsa had a nice balance of heat and flavor and paired perfectly with the crisp cooked chips. All meals in our party were thoroughly enjoyed. The Huevos Rancheros were cooked to perfection; the carne asada tacos were tender and served on nice small corn tortillas which enabled one to taste the meat. The carnitas were cooked perfectly and not greasy. The refried beans stood out because they contained real beans and were not just a puree on the plate. One thing I loved is that each member in our party was given a small dish for their salsa, instead of having to reach across the table to dip their chips! The service was quick and friendly. I highly recommend stopping by Perkins, OK if traveling nearby. read more

I eat here quite often and to be honest it never disappoints. The menu has recently been revamped and they have really upped their game.

The food at El Mexicano is always very delicious! Also, their taco salad is very delicious. The waitresses are friendly, and helpful.

Great little place to eat! Much more enjoyable than all of the restaurants of this kind in Stillwater! I really like the Mexican Pizza!! My only complaint has to do with some of the waitresses take a bath in perfume. I would much rather enjoy the smell of the food!!! read more

Would usually rate this a 4 or 5 but on this day Sunday tbe chips were cold and tasted a day old. FISH tacos were very tasty and flavorful, rice mildly seasoned, salad as expected, no dressing unless you ask for it. THE decor outside and in is something to see, lots of art. read more

You drive through Perkins OK and want some good Tex-Mex food, then you MUST stop here. Salsa is as good or better than Ted's in OKC or Tulsa. Been to both and this was like yo momma made it! Fresh, just right amount of heat and thick enough not to slid off those fresh hot chips! Rice is excellent, beans flavorful, shredded beef taco' delis', while the steak taco was very good as well. Cheese, beef Enchiladas were very good, too. This place will be remembered and we'll be back! read more

The atmosphere is nice, and we particularly liked all the metal artwork. The servers were all quite attentive and nice as well, although the staff should keep their foul language and complaints with one another off the dining floor. Our chips were old tasting and the queso that was served tasted like more like canned cheese food than anything authentic. My $8 fajita nachos literally had maybe 2oz of diced chicken over some more old chips and cheese food. My other 3 guests couldn't force down their meals either so we paid $38 and drove down the street to the nearest food option to try our best to suck it up and move on with our day. read more

Not typically what I would call 5 stars for mexican food, but I'm in Oklahoma. The food is really surprisingly good. Not to mention you get free queso!!!! There are not many better things on this earth than free queso. Try the chili releno! Good service , great atmosphere , good food. Great little place we were surprised to find in out of the way Perkins! Salsa was really great, the shredded beef enchiladas very tasty with good quality beef, and the godfather was very good, as well. Very good sized portions. The atmosphere was very soothing and the servers excellent! Certainly can recommend. Only negative was the cheese sauce, we didn't care for it. Beer but no liquor. read more

Excellent food choices and prices. My only complaint is the wait service during the evening rush. I'm not sure if the restaurant is short staffed or lacks good servers but if you are there during the rush do not expect fast or friendly service. Typically my boyfriend and I go either early or late in the evening so we almost always miss the rush which we have been thankful for. During one of our last visits we went during the rush and we were in the bar area for 20-25 minutes before we were even greeted and had our drink orders taken and chips, salsa and queso brought to our table. During the rest of our evening the waitress only came by to bring our food and check. She only checked on us once aside from the food and check bringing. I think they need to hire a host or hostess and a bar tender during their busy time because the servers seem to be stuck doing everything and there are just not enough of them around to give enough attention to the guests. I recommend going during their non-peak hours because the food and prices are great and we have beer had a problem any other time of day. read more
