I dig the name-maybe not the rhino head decor though. I've tried the Peruvian roasted chicken, grilled chicken & cheese sandwich, and the El Capataz fish & chips. I didn't really love any of them completely. The Peruvian roasted chicken comes with a decent-tasting, small portion of chicken, okay fries, and flavorless white beans. The grilled chicken & cheese sandwich was not my favorite, but I heard that some people like it. It's just kinda mushy. Finally, the El Capataz fish & chips were meh. The cod itself has too much breading, but the Mexa fries and malt vinegar were a good pair. Overall, the experience wasn't terrible. What a great place! We called with a party of 14, game them the time, when we arrived they were ready for us. This was 7pm Friday night. Manager greeted us and took us to our table. My wife and I have been dining at El Capataz for the last 4 months. I really enjoyed how they would promote their new beers. When you can read a beverage menu that describes a beer in detail and the result is even better, that to me is well organized restaurant that covers all aspects. Unfortunately this did'nt last. Now you have to ask what they have available and hope to understand the border slang. Today we decided to sit out on their patio, a beautiful night, cool and no wind. After an hour a noticed that my jeans were all wet and I asked the waiter why the cushions were wet. Well, I could'nt believe his brilliant answer...."Hey man it rained last night". I love going to El Capataz every time I visit Laredo and take guests to the city there as well. Their drinks and food have always been great, but I didn't have the top notch experience I usually get this last time I went. I ordered a cucumber martini which is usually delicious. It wasn't as strong as I've had it before and was very watery. Food came out quick, but my mom's pozole was basically just water with spices thrown in. She gets it every time she goes and it was noticeably different and lacking flavor. On top of that it had a hair in it! read more

Well... What can I say; this is the best beer selection in town! Where else can you find Left Hand Milk Stout in Laredo? They are not a restaurant in my opinion (even though they're a full service restaurant, it feels much more chic and cool in this place) ; their vibe is more of "nice bar with good food". Place is hard to miss located on Loop 20 close to the airport. But make no mistake; it gets pretty crowded past 6pm. Their ceviche is very good, but then again, everything else on the menu is delicious,if you like something different try Nopalito Salmon. We've always received good service but I guess all good things must come to an end at one time or another. There was an empty booth for over 30 minutes and when I asked whether reservations were accepted or the reason the booth was not being used, the hostess replied that no reservations were accepted but the booth was for large groups. Well we found 3 empty seats at the bar and decided to eat there. About 20 minutes later a different hostess comes to offer us the booth. ‍ Is they had originally given us the booth we would have almost finished with our meal. read more

best restaurant in town until tabernilla opened which I believe is owned by the same people which says a lot. My favorite dish is the prime rib with the horseradish cream sauce, that pepper crust that encases all that flavor into the meat is just perfection. They have a great selection of beers, and even have mezcal and sotol with the orange slices and sal de gusano who hi think is a great aperitif. Service has always been great no complaints from me and prices are reasonable. Other great things I've tried are the fish tacos, mussels, and burger. Love love love it here. Awesome place to go with friends or on a date. The food and drinks are different then the normal Laredo food . The bartender was very helpful and friendly. I was only in town for a month, but made it to this place 4 times to watch the Spurs. Good TVs, good beer selection, and extremely flavorful food. Everything I had was fantastic. Oh my goodness!! Such phenomenal food! My family and I decided to try this place based on reviews and a unique menu. We were so glad we did. We started with the "spicy" lime chicken wings. They were not spicy but they were very yummy! We loved the slight crispiness of the skin combined with the tangy lime flavor. We decide to order three main dishes that we could all share. First, we had the Fideo de la Abuela. It's like a Mexican spaghetti. It had a wonderful chorizo flavor and we were all fighting to get more bites of it. Next, we had the Salmon with nopalitos. Wow! So crazy good! The salmon was slightly crisp on the outside and perfectly cooked and moist in the middle. The nopalitos were tangy, so flavorful, and also perfectly cooked with the slightest crunch to them for great texture. Finally, we had the fish and chips - so freaking good!!! The cod fish was fresh and the breading was so crunchy and well seasoned. The fries were also super delicious with just the right crispness and seasoning. We also enjoyed the drinks. I had a Lychee Cipirinha which was described as a Brazilian margarita. It was sweet but so delicious with two large pieces of lychee in it. Very impressed! My husband had a draft grapefruit wheat beer that was also fantastic. Sadly, they ran out so we couldn't get one for dessert! Speaking of dessert, we ordered the sopapillas with vanilla bean ice cream. It disappeared very quickly and my daughters were ready to lick the plate! Don't even get me started with how good the bar is. Some of the best margaritas I've had in a while. The food portions were big to me if you order an appetizer. When my husband and I go now we get the fries (you have to) and then two appetizers (fish tacos and pork sliders are pretty amazing) and we are more than set. This is definitely a place you need to try. I love the Capataz Burger for the price I would much rather stop in there than going to What a burger. The beer is good and the Service is also good. The outside patio area needs to be updated to match the inside a bit closer, it seems a bit neglected in comparison to the inside. We asked for some jalapeños and they brought us some chile's toreados that were definitely pulled out of the fridge and reheated for I think like $5...so bring your own. read more

Food is great but haven't been able to actually eat there in months due to perpetually long wait times. Never able to get a table the place is so small it gets packed quickly. Wait is always 1 hour or more. Also the kitchen closes at 11pm and bar at 12 so If you do happen to get a table you feel rushed ..always end up going to Palenque Grill next door or Reserva by the mall due to impossibility of obtaining a table in a reasonable amount of time read more

This place was extremely cool and not at all what I expected to find in Laredo. The interior is very hip and the patio quite comfortable with a long bench along one side, padded chairs on the other side of the tables and even a flatscreen tv on the wall. I had a house/coin margarita ($6) which was great, but was overshadowed by the El Capataz margarita ($9) that had jalapeno, cucumber and cilantro muddled in with a chunky salt rim. Best margarita I've ever had! I also noticed that their beer selection was vast, even including Avery White Rascal and Breckenridge Agave Wheat (as a Colorado native, I loved this). Our large group split many appetizers, and some were so good we ordered them again. And then maybe again... Instead of heading out to another location for our dinner as planned, we all wanted to stay and keep eating and drinking at El Capataz. We shared the melty queso borracho, the creamy goat cheese in a tomato sauce, albondigas in a creamy sauce, grilled garlic shrimp, chorizo mussels, ribs with mexi fries, ceviche and something I'm forgetting. Some of the starters could be meals of their own and the meals could be shared with your significant other. I was there last nigh and the place was very busy, that's always promising. I was with another friend so we asked table for two. They offer us a very small one and I asked for the ones right in front to the main entrance and denied to us "because it's reserved for large parties". Since I didn't feel comfortable in the small booth (imagine bumping into a wall everyone you look right). We decided to go to the patio. To my surprise you have ugly aluminum Coca Cola tables LOL. And they offered me a bent table I was like ok, noticing that there was nothing else avail we sat down. Then we move again to another one wasn't bents. And then... an alacrán showed up on the wall (you have the tables against the rock wall) We told the waiter and he almost laugh and tough it was funny. I just ask for another table and ended up in the same booth I didn't want to be. While the "big party booths" were still open and empty. It was already almost 10 PM!!!!!! Horrible service BTW. I would not recommend this place anymore. I used to love it. But not friendly staff is a killer joy and not putting your guest needs first it's a total fail. read more

Been coming here since they've opened and I love it! I tend to sit on the patio or Bartop as tables aren't really my thing. Their patio is awesome during the spring and summer, but winter and fall they put this plastic cover over it and it gets hot and takes away the whole concept of a patio. Food wise, I've tried their burger... To die for!! It's full of flavor and their fries have some seasoning that is also delicious. Their fish tacos are my all time favorite plate they offer. They are light enough for an app for 2-4 or heavy enough as an entree for 1. I recently tried their fish n chips, and it's awesome! Two huge cod filets with fries and malt vinegar!! They have a good selection of draft beer that seems to be changing on the regular. Cocktail wise, they have a good selection of alcohol and decent prices, but their signature cocktails didn't do much for me. Service is good, never went without an empty glass of water or wine. Everyone seems to help each other out in the sense that our server got caught up and another came outside to ask how we were doing and helped us out. The bartenders Cheese and Yul (spelling?) I'm going to miss this place! Their hours are not great (dinner only) but boy does it show in the quality of food. I have NEVER found a restaurant so consistent with quality cooking as this one. I almost always get the Capataz fish and chips and the fish is cooked perfectly every time! My wife has had the fish tacos and finds them to be her favorite item. Service can be a tad slow at times and wait times for a table can be an issue if not there within an hour of opening but overall well worth the wait and cost. Not a cheap meal but quality. The presentation of the cheesecake is sophisticated and the sour quality of the dish is complemented by the honey topping. There's typically a forty-five minute or longer wait for a table for 2-3. However, the seating is much quicker if you opt to sit outside. I went for dinner to this restaurant on a winter night and was worried about sitting outside, but the outside porch has a number of electric heaters that keep you warm! read more
