This was the absolute best dining experience I have had in Laredo. First, the decor- it's eclectic and there is something interesting no matter where you look. Second, the food- we had the melted cheese with bread, and it was phenomenal- so much flavor. I would order that again and again. For an entree, I had the Peruvian chicken. OMG was it amazing- so juicy and so much flavor. Even the white meat was yummy. The white beans had such a delicate flavor, and the fries were an herby, delicious, crispy bite. My husband had the 13 oz prime rib, something he's been craving a while, and he said it was perfect and exactly what you want in a prime rib. Next time I come back to Laredo, I'm returning to El Capataz. read more

Two Foodies from Houston While in Laredo, we decided to dine at El Capataz (The Overseer). The restaurant is Classy Western style. A gentleman open the door and warmly greets on the way in and out. Nice touch. Wait staff was professional, personable, and friendly. The menu has something for everyone from hamburger, fish and chips, fish tacos, and more. Please check their menu. We started with a drinks and Elote. Since we've had Mexican food for two days we ordered the Fish and Chips which was delicious. The order comes with four fried fish fillets, fries, and a yummy dipping sauce and Malted vinegar. For dessert, we had the brownie bits with a scope of vanilla ice cream. The place itself has a modern Spanish twist on the decor inside. The ambiance is very chill and can be both a popping hang out place or nice date night. The man with salt and pepper hair that I would assume was the manager was very funny and helpful. The waitress was polite and charming as well and had a few jokes as well. Overall the service part was very pleasant and is what would make me come back. The drinks were different but both nicely balanced and tasty. The food was somewhat of a miss as the protein seemed to have been a little over cooked but the sides and everything else was very delicious. The salmon, prime rib, and burger patty were all a bit over cooked. The salmon was a bit on the dry side for being blackened, the prime rib seemed to be over cooked or was either from day before or left over, and the burger patty after being asked for medium well was well done with no slight pink to be found. Those were the only misses in my opinion but everything else was great. They had run out of wings which I wanted to try but definitely worth trying if you have a chance. Cantarito shandy great balance and if you like grapefruit you'll love this drink. El canton the ginger and pineapple gave a banana type flavor but it was nicely balanced. Prime rib cocktail- great flavor from beer stewed vegetables. Beautiful balanced and got better with every bite, however the prime rib was over cooked and a bit tough. Almost tasted like prime rib used from day before or left over. Coconut blackened salmon - salmon a bit on dry side but the rice and plantain was on point. El capataz burger patty was well but the chorizo with mushrooms and cheese paired nicely. read more

I came to the restaurant to order Togo food from the neighboring hotel I'm staying at. I walked in with over 20mins till the restaurant was to close but was turned away. There was 2 guest at the bar and several active tables. I told the staff behind the bar that it shows the restaurant doesn't close for another 20mins and didn't understand why I couldn't order. I was told there's another restaurant to the right. I'm now at the other restaurant next door waiting for Togo food. As an owner of a sports bar and grill I would fire the staff that turned my customers away and sent them to a competitor less than 50yds away. BTW both places close at the same time. This is a staple when we visit our friends in Laredo (a few times a year). The staff are always friendly. The drinks are wonderful. Particularly their seasonal options. Same for the food. It's excellent. Always perfectly cooked. Flavorful. Timely. Even during covid when we did a pick up the food quality didn't suffer one bit. The pick up process was simple and safe. It was ready in the time quoted. And all the food was as good as if we ate at the restaurant. Excellent food and service! A little confusing on the maps app - call them if it's dark outside and you are lost! They are super friendly and helpful! My friend and I headed here after a long workday. We needed to find a place that would be open after 9pm and this place is open until 11pm on weeknights! We previewed the menu before coming in and knew exactly what we wanted to order before we even sat down. The chef came out and greeted us and made us feel welcome. We ordered the shrimp meatballs and were completely enamored with them. For dinner I had the fish on mashed chickpeas and peas with a side of fresh veggies (squash and zucchini). Let's be honest. People don't flock to a city like Laredo for the cuisine. No, people are in Laredo for other reasons, and my reason for being there is always work related. That said, El Capataz is a solid choice for Mexican-inspired seafood and other tasty options while dining in the "largest inland port in the U.S." El Capataz is a bit of an oddity. Part sports bar, part tequila bar, and part restaurant, you can go in expecting a halfway decent selection of draft beer and tequilas to choose from. The menu consists of two sides of a laminated card (presumably for easy wiping from encounters with said beverages), but don't let that dissuade you. My tablemate and I tried the ceviche, as well as the "Corvina Valenciana" (drum fish) and the fish tacos. Yeah, we're seafood people apparently. The ceviche was good, although it was shrimp-based instead of fish-based, which we didn't expect. It didn't matter, the ceviche was delicious. The fish tacos and the Corvina were also excellent, and I was excited to get so much good seafood in this "inland port" city. Service was good and attentive, if a bit slow--but I've noticed that is typical for border towns, so I'm not holding any grudges. I will say, however, that El Capataz is loud, and with TVs plastered all over the walls, I felt a bit odd paying $14 per entre in Laredo in what really sort of felt like a sports bar. A couple other notes on the Yelp listing. 1) While listed as "dressy," this place definitely isn't, at least by any normal standards (that's a good thing). 2) El Capataz is NOT open 24/7 (I think they closed around 11p on the Tuesday I was there). My bottom line: When in Laredo, try the seafood, tequila, and beer; and try them at El Capataz. read more

Genuinely good for Laredo. I've been in a few times, but hadn't previously written a review. The setting is western bar meets gastropub, and the ambience is buzzing and warm. The staff are friendly and competent, a definite plus. I stopped in last week and had a great on-tap wheat beer, a fun mandarin orange and shrimp ceviche, and a chorizo burger. The beer and ceviche were good, but the burger fell flat. It tasted and felt like a frozen patty, with the soulless texture to boot. At El Capataz's price point and quality, this should be a hand-made fresh patty. Stick to the prime rib--I've had much better luck there. read more

My first time here. Seated quickly. Waited quite a while before a waitress came by to take my drink order. Ordered my meal at the same time as I had time to decide. Nice inside. Ordered the prime rib and a beer. Waitress was friendly and knowledgeable about their craft beers. Food came quickly, directly from the kitchen bypassing waitress. She did check by shortly after food arrived. I have to say, the prime rib was savory and spiced with just the right blend of flavors Seasoned fries came with this. We arrived late on a Wednesday evening to get dinner and drinks with my girlfriends family. Upon arriving we were greeted by the hostess and directed to the bar to endure the 45 min wait. We were immediately welcomed by the bartender and ordered a round of drinks. Before we could even look around for more bar stools to accommodate 6 of us, the manager quickly arranged a booth for us. This cut our wait time down to under 10 min! We order a few appetizers with were served in generous portions. We moved on to order entrees which also came our with great presentation and in a timely manner. Drinks were great, food was great, atmosphere and staff overdelivered on every occasion.
