Menu - Breakfast, Appetizers, Snacks, and Pupusa as of 4/17/25
    Belinda C.

After getting my walk-in haircut the last hour before closing, I noticed several customers still arriving and other people wandering into El Boritracho, the restaurant next door. I had never noticed the unassuming 2 year old restaurant before, but El Boritracho was already on my radar as a pupusa restaurant. El Boritracho is a portmanteau or blended word of Boricua (slang term for a Puerto Rican person) and Catracho (slang term for a Honduran man). The restaurant made up the word for its name. El Boritracho serves primarily Puerto Rican, Honduran, and Salvadorean food. There is a menu section with Mexican food. I decided to order two pupusas, $4 each: - Chicharon y Queso (Pork and Cheese) - Loroco y Queso (Loroco Flower and Cheese) A pupusa comes with Tomato Sauce and Cabbage Salad (aka Cultivo or Curtido). The Loroco and Cheese pupusa was very cheesy. You could do a cheese pull with it! I always order this type of pupusa to compare pupusa restaurants. Sometimes, restaurants don't fill pupusas much given they are flat, so I feel the cheese only pupusa is the best gauge. You could see and taste the pork in the Pork and Cheese pupusa. I would try the Chicken and Cheese pupusa in the future. The manager says they use chicken leg meat in it, so it should be tender. I enjoyed eating pupusas with the tomato sauce and cabbage salad. The menu says the pupusas could be made of either corn or rice. Might be interesting to try a rice flour pupusa someday. Recommended Dishes by Manager: * El Boritracho (beef, chicken, shrimp, rice, beans, trifongo, salad) * Pastelon (plantain lasagna) * Caldo de Mariscos (seafood soup) Manager's Favorites: * El Boritracho * Baleadas Hondurenas (breakfast tacos - meat, mashed beans, cheese, crema in a homemade tortilla) * Tamarind Juice * Maracuya or Passion Fruit Juice The manager was nice to offer me a sample Soursop juice given I didn't know what it was. The taste reminded me of guava nectar, but it's milky in color, not pink. Soursop is a spiky green fruit. If you pay cash, total will be lower, maybe because you avoid the credit card fee. I think the menu prices might include tax, or maybe it's an April tax month promo? Anyway, I thought the pupusas were reasonably priced. While I was there, a few parties dined in, but I suspect more customers order to go since the decor and ambiance are basic. There are about 8 tables of 4 and 2 tables set up for 6. The tables of 6 comprised of 2 tables of 4. I recommend watching the food slide show on the TV monitors for inspiration on what to order. The manager is friendly and helpful to answer questions and make recommendations. I thought the Casamiento, the Salvadoran rice and beans, looked yummy in pics. It is similar to Cajun or Creole dirty rice. From Yelp pics, it appears there are 2 or 3 different rices offered at the restaurant. Read the menu descriptions carefully for which rice accompanies your entree: * Rice (Arroz) * Gandules Rice (Arroz con Gandules - Puerto Rican rice with pigeon peas) * Casamiento (Salvadoran rice and beans) You can order Puerto Rican Mofongo and Trifongo here! I'm happy to have found a friendly and yummy pupuseria without having to drive all the way to Sacramento! Give El Boritracho a try.

Do yourself a favor and try this place!! Very authentic Salvadorian food, I went with my in-laws who are Salvadorian, and everything we had was so delicious. From the pupusas, to the empanadas salvadoreñas, to the boritracho, everything was just delicious. For far too long, we have been searching for a great pupusa place in Sacramento and thanks to this restaurant, we finally have one! The inside of the restaurant itself was very cozy and welcoming. The staff were extremely friendly and the music playing just set such a comfortable vibe. I would easily make a 45+ minute drive just to eat here and can't wait to go back!

They have Amazing Pupusas, great service, great price. I Highly recommend eating at El Boritracho.

I really got way too excited about this beer from PR.

You've got to love a restaurant that serves a little bit of everything, and that's what we found at El Boritracho in Citrus Heights. I brought a couple of friends as I knew I'd want to order several dishes. We started with the Botanas plate with shrimp, beef, casava and plantain to taste a little bit of many things. Highly recommend. I will never, ever pass up tostones so we got an order of these as well. SO good. Next we had empanadas and an alcapurria. These weren't on the menu. The empanadas were good but the alcapurria was a little over done. Of course I had to try the mofongo with carne frita. I usually order my mofongo with shrimp (or conch if available) but one of my friends dining with me doesn't eat seafood, so fried beef it was. Very tasty. We also tried the Sopa de Gallino or Chicken Soup. Not sure how I managed to miss the picture of the broth. But the chicken was wonderfully seared and the broth so flavorful. We also tried the pupusas revueltos and they were delicious. I mean, most of the rest was Puerto Rican, but I can never say no to a pupusa. The highlight for me was Medalla on the menu. When my dad worked in PR in the 90s it was his favorite beverage. I rarely see it in the states and I've NEVER seen it in California. That was a nice and tasty surprise. I normally go into San Francisco for mofongo, but it's nice to know there's a good option closer to home.

Good service, great music and ambience. Alcapurries were sweeter that they should and their dipping sauce was very runny. The flan is a cheese flan. The pollo frito and yuca balls with cheese were really good. A bit pricey, and they didn't have coco rico.

It's rare to find Puerto Rican or Honduran restaurants in Sacramento and here you get both! This is a small spot with Puerto Rican and Honduran flags proudly hanging all over the walls. They also have Salvadoran food (and flags). We tried the pupusas and two different mofongo plates. I had the mofongo with shrimp on top and the sauce was delicious! We also had a passion fruit juice, guanábana juice, and Salvadoran horchata. (Yes this type of horchata tastes different than Mexican horchata and I love it. ) The servers were friendly. I would come back again.

I was staying about 45 minutes away but had to try the food when I saw the menu! From the minute I walked in, greeted by very friendly staff (shout-out to Rey who knew what to recommend the minute I mentioned I was from PR!), fun merengue music, and smells of home! Ordered the fried fish with tostones (fried plantains) and they were delicious - and too much for one person but I couldn't resist! The cold malta India on the side was the final touch. If you're thinking about it, try it! You wont regret the mini vacation. :)

I love this restaurant!!!! Five stars deserved! Thank you for great service and making me more homesick. I'm Nuyorican and this is the food I grew up on in NYC and going to PR as a kid. My partner is Guatemalan-Honduran American. So this is our place. Treated us like Kings. The food is off the hook and typical Latino portions. Come Hungry!! Nade me so happy! Thank you!

With authentic flavors and food items, there's not many like it around town. Bodega serves up food from the Caribbean Islands. One of their most popular dishes is their jerk chicken. They have this both as a chicken wing appetizer and as a plated dinner. I personally really enjoy white meat when it comes to chicken and the dinner plate was leg and thigh so I opted to go with the wing appetizer. My only complaint about it was its size. I thought it could have had more wings as I thoroughly enjoyed each one with the jerk sauce I added to it. The wings were very crisp on the outside and full of flavor. Adding the jerk sauce or their house made hot sauces enhanced the flavor even more. I could really see myself coming just for these wings! I also had the Cubano sandwich. This hot, pressed sandwich has ham, cheese, pickles, and mustard. It's a popular item that also is bursting with flavor. The combination of all the ingredients was mouthwatering. It comes with a side of fries to round out the meal. Service at Bodega was very nice. We found the servers to be very patient with us and the food came out reasonably. I was specifically there for a birthday party where we had cake being served from outside the restaurant. Bodega has a cake cutting charge, but seeing our tiny cake they waived it for us! It's a cute restaurant and definitely different than many you will find around Sacramento. If you're in the pocket area, Bodega is well worth a visit!

I didn't want to write this review but I had a concern about something about the menu. I ordered the tequenos de pollo as an appetizer and the menu didn't say anything about it having cheese in which was perfect. I got the order and it in fact had cheese. I'm lactose intolerant and really sensitive to dairy so I asked about the cheese being in it. He confirmed it was in there, so I asked if they can just take it back- the waiter said no. I then asked if they can just take it off the bill because I couldn't eat it. He said no to that too. My husband doesn't eat meat and my son is lactose intolerant so it was going to be food wasted and money down the drain. I was pretty shocked because I've never been to a restaurant where they can't reasonable accommodate the guest. I then ordered my entree and the chicken was very dry and overcooked. I was not satisfied but I knew they wouldn't let me swap it for something else. Unfortunately I'm not going to rush to come back. The waiter was friendly enough but not accommodating. I get nervous when it comes to food allergies because now I know that some restaurants aren't disclosing food allergens which is actually not allowed. There are folks out here with life threatening allergies, so these places need to be careful. I'm glad I'm not one of those people but it's still disappointing.

Luckily the weather was perfect the day we went, so we grabbed a table outside and it ended up being the ideal way to enjoy the meal. We started with a Cuban café with condensed milk, and it was incredible. The coffee was bold and rich like a good Cuban espresso should be, and the condensed milk added the perfect amount of sweetness and creaminess. It was smooth, strong, and honestly one of the best cups of coffee I've had in a while. For food, she ordered the chilaquiles and I ordered the ropa vieja plate, and we also added an order of papa rellenas to share. The chilaquiles were easily the star of the show. The chips were perfectly coated in sauce without being soggy, and the sauce itself had a really unique flavor compared to the traditional chilaquiles I'm used to. It had a deeper, richer taste with just the right balance of spice and tang. Every bite was packed with flavor and it felt like a really thoughtful twist on the dish. The ropa vieja was just as impressive. The shredded beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, clearly slow-cooked because it just fell apart with each bite. The seasoning was spot on -- savory, slightly tomatoey, and really comforting. It came with black beans and rice, and even though I'm usually not a big fan of black beans, these were excellent. They had a lot of flavor and a great texture, not watery or bland like they sometimes can be. The only thing that didn't quite land for me was the papa rellenas. They were well made, but I was expecting something with more of an empanada-like texture or a crispier outer bite. Instead, it was much more potato-forward, which made it a little heavier than I was hoping for. Service was amazing! Kind friendly staff Overall though, the food was flavorful, the coffee was amazing, and the relaxed outdoor seating made it a really enjoyable meal. Definitely a spot worth checking out if you're in the area.
