A friend recommended this Cuban place. She really enjoyed it and it was right in the neighborhood. This was my second visit to this venue. The last time I visited, I remember the locals there talking with the owners. Several saying that they are regular customers and how happy they were with the food. My friends and I came to this spot on a whim and we love this hidden gem. As soon as you walk in you can smell the spices and see the guava/guava + cheese rolls. Whenever we're craving Cuban food we end up here. Their always so nice and the food is consistently delicious. The restaurant is located in a little business strip and there is parking available right in front. When it's busy you may need to park a bit further down. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner options and they're all delicious. On our latest visit we enjoyed shredded beef omelette, tostones rellenos, papa rellena, and a Cuban sandwich, along with flan for dessert and it was all delicious. I recommend sharing so you can try more of the menu. The Cuban sandwich is our favorite, but we like to split it and share a new to us dish. It's always freshly cooked and flavorful, and ask for their hot sauce if you'd like an extra kick. The flan is also a great way to end the meal. This is my second time coming to Sol Cubano--both times were takeout, and both times were delicious. Tucked into a cramped shopping center, the inside is cozy, and while the space is small, the flavors are anything but. The first time I came here, I ordered lechón asado with moros y cristianos and a beef empanada. Worth every penny. You also get a simple side salad, which is a nice touch. The lechón asado was great, even though I'm not a huge pork eater, but the real standout? The empanada. This time, I went for vaca frita, again with moros y cristianos and a beef empanada. I also got greedy and ordered two papa rellenas--they're cheap and can be ordered individually, so why not? It's too tempting when you see all of the beautiful pastries sitting behind the glass of their small but glorious case. The vaca frita was addicting to eat. I enjoyed the texture of the stringy, somewhat dry beef contrasted with the tender onions and that hit of acidity from the lime juice. On paper, it might not sound like much, but the flavors and textures work well together, especially with the beans and rice. Once again, the empanada was fantastic--juicy, well-seasoned beef inside a crispy shell. As for the papa rellenas, I had never tried this dish before and didn't quite know what to expect. Not my personal favorite, but I can see why people love them. Again, the side salad was clutch--it's fresh, lightly dressed (I think with olive oil and lemon juice?), and a great way to cut through all of the rich, fatty red meat. I always look forward to coming here on my lunch breaks. The staff is super friendly and welcoming, and the first time I came in, they helped me decide what to order since I had limited knowledge of Cuban cuisine. Been wanting to try this restaurant since traveling in Southern Florida years ago. Was disappointed to see it empty at lunch but it was early on Good Friday, so that might be why. The lady and gentleman here were so welcoming and friendly and everything looked and smelled so good. We decided to try a sample platter along with a few other things and just share. I haven't been here in quite a while, and I had an appointment at the McClellan VA, so I decided to stop in for lunch. I am glad they were open. Right now, They are open for lunch and dinner, Wednesday through Saturday, and then closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. I always enjoy the place, it doesn't look like much from the outside, but it has a nice atmosphere of a tropical restaurant on the inside. I decided to start with the croquetas. Basically, ham croquettes. The order comes with six, which was too much for me, so they were nice enough to do a half order for me. They came with a very good dipping sauce, which had the texture and flavor of "fry sauce". If you don't know what fry sauce is, the basic ingredients are ketchup and mayonnaise,, and then you can go on and add other ingredients from there. The croquetas tasted good, but for me, they were a bit too gummy in the middle. I don't know if that's supposed to be the texture or they weren't cooked enough, but they were not a success for me. Next time I would probably just order the plantains, which I know are good. The traditional Cubano, or Cuban sandwich, however, was a home run. Pork, ham, cheese, pickles, and mustard, on a pressed Cuban bun. Wonderfully crispy, and the flavors just melded so well together. I love a good Cubano, and this one is very good. My Mother and I are from Panama. Whenever we feel nostalgic, we crave for authentic Panamanian food; we go to El Sol Cubano. The food is very close to ours. I ordered the Bistec Encebollado (sliced top sirloin steak w/ onions) which is a spiced, flavorful skillet steak. Simple but with deep flavors... it was a delicious combination of textures. I think this was more of a Puerto Rican dish? I could be wrong. I also had a side order of the Platanos Maduro (fried sweet plantains)... I almost forgot to share with the hubby. I left him one piece LoL! For dessert I had the Chocoflan and the taste had just the right sweetness level for me. Hubby ordered the Rabo Encendido (oxtail stew). I had a little taste of it. Sol Cubano serves Cuban food. I read through lots of reviews before ordering. Because there were so many recommendations from Yelp reviewers and so many new items I wanted to try, I went with the Sampler Platter and added an empanada and a Cortadito. I ordered 2 pasteles or pastries (guava & cheese and coconut) and a flan to go. The most impressive from the Sampler Platter were the LECHON (marinated roast pork) and PAPA RELLENA (golf ball sized mashed potato ball filled with ground beef). The yucca fries were fun to eat, and I liked the simple vinaigrette salad. Croqueta was unusual, so I wasn't sure what I was eating given I was expecting potato. Turned out it is a fried meat fritter (ham?) shaped into a little log or cigar; I had to surf the Internet on "Cuban Croqueta." A menu description would have been appreciated. Tostones (fried green plantains) were too hard, plain, and unfamiliar to me. The sweet plantains (Plantanos Maduro) were what you expect them to be. The Cuban Rice (Moros y Cristianos) wasn't as flavorful as it looked. I would try the white rice and black beans next time. The CORTADITO is a sweetened Cuban espresso with milk served in a Dixie cup size. This was a fun experience that I'd recommend. The EMPANADA was yummy, like a chili seasoned ground beef taco wrapped up as a giant fried dumpling or samosa. Most of my table ended up ordering empanadas to go! It's great that you can order the Empanadas and Papa Rellenas individually. I received two very small cups of dip, which I think went with the empanada. One was an onion and oil mixture. The other was an aioli. I ended up using them with the yucca fries and tostones. The flan is smooth, creamy, and sweet. I preferred the guava & cheese pastele over the coconut one. The pasteles are made of puff pastry and are about 3 to 3.5 inches in length. The OXTAIL STEW looked so yummy, so I might order that in the future. Vaca Frita, fried shredded beef with lime juice and onions, seemed highly recommended for its flavor in the reviews. To have an easier time parking, I would turn on N Haven Drive then turn left into Sol Cubano's strip plaza. Restaurant is on the far left of the plaza, so there's more parking towards the right. Best Cuban food in Northern California! My husband is Cuban and we're constantly looking for a good Cuban restaurant. Sol Cubano is clean, ambience is great, owners are friendly and attentive, lots of nostalgic pictures on the walls - and then there's the food!!!! Always fabulous! My favorite is the Vaca Frita with black beans, white rice, platanos maduros (soft and sweet), typical Cuban salad with oil and vinegar dressing. Hubby loves yuca with butter and garlic sauce for dipping and Cuban sandwiches. Also good is ropa vieja. And don't forget dessert!
