I'd say one of the best Jamaican Rice and Peas I've had outside of my grandma's. I also had the oxtails. Heavy on the pimento but full of flavor and super tender. Paired with the rice and peas made for a fantastic meal. Very short hours and days of operation, you must plan carefully but I think you'll be very pleased. Thank you Sean for brining us a taste of our country.

This is the spot for authentic Jamaican food, cooked and served by kind, generous, and super friendly owners! We shared laughs during our first time stopping by! The oxtail and Jamaican flags on Fulton Ave. are what caught our attention, then, when we saw the "Yaah Man" flag, we knew we had found this spot. When we saw the scrumptious looking, mouthwatering empanadas and fried chicken from their window front, my best friend and I followed our stomachs and eyes to go inside. Their oxtail meal and beef empanada hit the spot with Jamaican flavors, so much that my best friend ate her entire meal in one sitting! I tasted the plantains and couldn't stop myself from eating more of the sweet perfection! The beef empanada was a hot, perfect pocket filled with spices that were just the right amount of mild heat. I am already craving another empanada and plan to try the curry empanada next visit! You can dine in or purchase takeout. The ambiance is like you're eating in a friend or family member's kitchen! They share this kitchen with other small businesses, so it is a win win to try different foods including Ethiopian, to support local businesses!

Oxtail dish with rice and plantains. Super yummy!

The restaurant has a ton of seating and the walls are nicely decorated. I would say maybe add another mural on the other side because the one wall that has it, is beautiful! They have all these great hot sauces at the counter, make sure you try them all! My fave was the scotch bonnet pepper sauce. Spicy and a tiny sweet. We ordered two beers on draft, the jerk chicken, curry goat with a side of mac and dumplings. The dumplings are almost donut hole type bites with a hint of sweetness. It goes so well with the curry! The goat curry was interestingly delicious. I didn't think I would like goat - but here I am. It was very VERY good, just look out for all the little bones. The jerk chicken was flavorful and tasty and the side of mac n cheese was the perfect blend of noodles, cheese and spices with the meats. I also want to thank them for the delicious Jamaican patty filled with beef that was given to us. It was very good and the puff pastry was baked to perfection! Our server was great and the cook/I think the owner was wonderful. We had a reservation and were seated immediately. From the moment we walked in, the hospitality was on point and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. One thing I love about Fixins is that the menu truly has something for everyone. We even got the chance to meet Aunt Pearl, whose name appears on the menu, which made the experience feel even more special. We ordered the Chicken & Waffles along with sides of Mac & Cheese and Candied Yams. The candied yams were buttery, sweet, and everything you want from a classic soul food side. The mac and cheese was rich, creamy, cheesy, and packed with flavor. The waffle was a standout. It had a subtle spice to it, a crispy exterior, and paired perfectly with the chicken. The chicken itself was well seasoned, perfectly battered, and fried just right. And then there's the Red Kool-Aid. Fixins should honestly bottle that stuff and sell it by the gallon because it was THAT good. One thing that caught my eye on the menu was their Kool-Aid soaked pickle. I didn't try it this visit, but next time I'm definitely ordering one of their sandwiches because it comes with the sandwich plates and I'm too curious not to. The food, service, and atmosphere all came together to create an experience that felt like family. It truly feels like somebody's grandmother is in the back making sure every plate leaves the kitchen with love. Definitely looking forward to coming back.

I attended a neighbor event Afrobeats day party this weekend June 27th close to Fixins Soul Kitchen. They were kind enough to allow my lady friend and myself to use there restroom while attending the event. We decided to leave the event around 8:15 pm and visited Fixins one last time to use the restaurant restroom. My lady friend and I spoke outside the restaurant briefly making plans to meet at Fixins another time so I couldtry the food. As I go to leave on my motorcycle allowing it to warm up an employee from Fixins comes out to the sidewalk yelling at me go go go just go very very rudely saying my motorcycle is too loud just go. I explained to him it need to warm up and rudely waving his hand rudely in the air on the sidewalk still saying to me go go go! Now the music from the event was very loud you could clearly hear it from 34th st to 33st. So my motorcycle couldn't haveen be much louder. I definitely won't be visiting Fixins Soul Kitchen on Broadway ever with rude employee like this working in there restaurant! I've lived in the Oak Park area my entire life 62 years always treating others with respect. Absolutely ridiculous behavior, this employee has no business in the restaurant environment.

We learned on our very first visit how good the gumbo is and it's become a must ever since. The people who work here are friendly and you can tell they have a lot of regulars who stop in for food. There's a gravel lot right next to the building and you can take your food to go or enjoy it there. Our food took about 15-20 minutes and then we took it home to enjoy. The portions are definitely fair for the price. They also pack everything well for the ride home. The gumbo is our favorite, it's flavorful and packed with protein like their sausage, chicken, and shrimp and has just a hint of spice. We tried their riblets for the first time and it was a generous portion and we really enjoyed the bbq sauce they used. The mac and cheese is good, but I like mine creamier. It does have a little spice which was nice. The dressing was packed with flavor and we were excited they offered this side because you don't see it everywhere. Their hot water cornbread is definitely something they're known for and is really good on its own or dipped into the gumbo. The Palmer here tastes like Brisk raspberry tea mixed with lemonade, and we really enjoy this twist on it. Overall this spot is a local gem and we love visiting.

One…read morecustomer was sitting at a table waiting for her order. It's a small, very interesting place! (I found this restaurant by accident on Google.) I decided to stand there and review the very clear appetizing menu, taking a moment to soak in this unusual eating spot. I enjoyed the uniqueness and creativity of the layout--you have to be here to understand it. Anyway, as I was standing there, I heard a very pleasant voice ask, "May I help you?" I reached up and turned up my "pretend" hearing aid to make sure I heard that voice coming from a professional Young Queen. It made me forget I was at a soul food establishment! Usually, I am greeted with rolling eyes, laziness, and--most of all--attitude. (See one of my old podcasts link below regarding my opinion on soul food restaurants on iHeartRadio): https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-the-david-mack-show-105280474/episode/lena-s-soul-food-in-oakland-ca-119449772/?cmp=android_share&sc=android_social_share&pr=false Back to my review: Her name is Victoria... like the Queen! I told Victoria I was looking at the menu, which has a very nice variety of soul food selections. Victoria asked me if I would like to sample the gumbo. Sure! Victoria came back with a small, teasing sample, and after tasting it, I told her, "SOLD!" Just from the taste of that gumbo, I knew my Mother's Spirit was back there doing the cooking. It was a very cold day, and I would have eaten there, but because of the layout, I ordered the family size to-go. The gumbo also comes with hot water cornbread. Victoria took my order, my payment, and advised me it would be ready in five minutes. I waited in my car. I came back in four minutes, and my order was already bagged and ready for pickup. I "suffered" during the hour-long drive home, smelling the aroma of that meal the whole way! Finally home, I opened the secure bag, filled to the top container, and took out the prize. The food presentation was excellent! I put the gumbo in a bowl, and it was still very hot. I then proceeded to taste my meal: Rice: Nice and fluffy! Chicken: Flavored perfectly. Soup Juice: Perfect. Prawns: Excellent. Sausage: Plump and sliced perfectly. All many other ingredients: Very tasty with a hint of spice. Note: There were no crab legs to make a mess (which I did NOT miss) and no slimy okra (which was great)! The sweet hot water cornbread was very buttery and looked like a thick pancake. I put mine in the toaster oven to warm it up and get it a little crisp. It was amazing! That gumbo not only warmed me up, but it also put me to sleep like a big baby! If this restaurant continues with the trajectory of this review (professional attitude, unique layout, and great menu items), they will be the "go-to" soul food spot on the 80! I wouldn't change a thing! I will return because I want to report on another food item I had my eye on before the gumbo sample! Go check out this spot and see the Young Queen Victoria! Make sure you tip her for great service (No Tax On Tips), just like I did! David Mack (Reviewer-in-Chief)

Our waiter was very friendly and extremely welcoming, and he made several suggestions for dishes and drinks; several of which we ended up getting.
