One of the most well kept secrets in Phoenix is the Phoenix Union High School District's magnet…read moreprogram. High School students can be trained in MANY vocational programs. Everything from Marine Biologists to a Paralegal Aid... this also includes - a hairstylst. Protege Hair Salon is located within Metro Tech High School and trains high school students to pass their boards and is an actual cosmetology school. And when I started to bug my mom about me getting my hair cut... this was the FIRST place she recommended. At first I was okay with it... I have a favorite saying when it comes to salons: "You get what you pay for" and when I saw that they were having a 2 for 1 special that day on hair cuts... I became afraid... very afraid. Because my cut by itself cost $2.50 Yes... that is not a typo - Two dollars and fifty mother effing cents! When we entered the academic building it did take some time to find the actual salon, and when we were there - there were two teachers who directed their students to be polite and how to ask us what we wanted. They also have facials and waxing services as well as manicures and pedicures. I was too busy shitting bricks afraid of the white cloaked teenagers running around with bright red and purple hair. They were whelding sharp scissors, razors and bleach - oh my. I didn't know what to think... or what I should do. I wanted to run away - run far away! But my mom wouldn't let me. "Just give it a try!" I have layers and it's been about a year since I had a haircut. So I really didn't know what to expect. Atlast it was my turn. My hair dresser was Michelle. and she recited a well rehearsed script. "Hi my name is Michelle, I'm happy to help you today. What type of look were you looking for?" We did a pretty nice consultation, I didn't ask them for the crazy layers and cut I got a year ago... instead I played it safe and asked for a couple of inches off with a rounded end and trimmed sideswept bangs. Before Michelle cut ANYTHING, she had to have it approved by her teacher who would begin the cut and kind of stand over her to make sure it was being done correctly. They were all amazed by the length of my hair (it was too my waist) and I just wanted the dead ends gone. At the end, they blow dried my hair and she put a cute lil curl on it with a round brush... and I really did like it. It was longer than I thought it would be. But the rounded edge is nice. I really like that look. Also their products left my hair so SOFT and pretty feeling. But I'm not thrilled with my bang. I wish it were shorter or more stylized. But I guess it's okay. I'm actually very sorry of being so afraid of these young hair stylsts. Overall, the salon is satisfying but not thrilling. But really, what can you expect for $2.50?! And I did get my money's worth... and then some! I think I will come back, just for a trim. and I would recommend them to a friend who is looking for a cheap simple cut.

I had been to Metro Tech to get a hair styling and manicure. If you are looking for a low cost…read moregreat look, this is the place. I know the students are good because I was a counselor in the school district and Metro Tech screens those students for academics and behavior before they even take them. So they already have to be a good student before they get there. I know because I have filled out the papers to send students there, and had to check every absence, grade, and credit on their transcript, along with that discipline record, before sending a student to even be considered for Metro Tech Cosmetology. Therefore, you are getting probably some of the best quality hairdressing students in the whole valley. I don't know whether the private schools are as picky as Metro is about admissions or not. You would have to do your own research on that. Go to this place. Give it a try!

Instructors always on their phones and like to provoke arguments from students. They will do anything but teach you. Go to this school only if you want to teach your self, sit around for hours on end wasting valuable learning time. The recruiters walk around constantly bringing up how they get paid more for students passing their tests so it is all just a money game for this school. Over crowding the driving pad so you have less time to actually learn or practice, completely unorganized management, no curriculum set in place so each instructor tells you different things, instructors being overwhelmed and overloaded with students forcing students to teach each other. All the training vehicles have various issues making the manuever / driving inconsistent. The school is also infested with mosquitos and ants and they do nothing about it but recommend bug spray

Based on his recommendation, my husband and I called and made a same day appointment to get more information and check the school out firsthand. Our appointment and ongoing contact was with Carlos. He explained their program, gave us a tour and answered our questions. He was very personable and relaxed. No pressure. We spent about a week discussing the logistics of going to school and basically making a career/life change. After that things happened pretty quick. We again met with Carlos. Then we met with Janessa who answered all our questions about Werner. Janessa is awesome! She and Carlos took care of all the paperwork and got us a prehire at Werner Enterprises. (Although the school is owned by Werner, there are other options.) Brittany, who handles financing, walked us through the process. Classes start every Monday. We picked a start date then used the time to study for our CDL permit. Sidenote: Get CDL permit, drug test and DOT physical before starting classes if possible. You will get out of the classroom and to the core elements of the program quicker. Plan on classes taking up a major part of your life for a short time. The program is 160 hours. It is Monday thru Saturday from 7am-6pm with an hour break for lunch at noon and a couple smaller breaks. The goal is to prepare you to take and pass your CDL test. To do this they focus on the three parts that will make up your CDL test: Pre Trip, maneuvers and driving.
