I came early 2 days and was told to seat myself. The food was excellent as was the service. The third morning I arrived after checking out of the hotel and after waiting almost 10 minutes to be seated I figured I should just seat myself as I had done the two previous visits. I sat in the same area I had on the previous mornings, and after another 15 minutes I asked the girl at the breakfast counter if that area was open or should I move - she confirmed I was ok to sit there but still no one served me. A waitress finally asked the girl at the counter if I was waiting for someone and why I didn't have a menu. Counter girl finally brought a menu after being told to do so, and delivered it with a lecture about seating myself. I explained why I had sat down, and she still acted ruffled over it. 15 minutes later my cold eggs with burnt bacon arrived. 35 minutes later, no one had come back to check and see if I needed a refill or anything else, I pushed the dirty dishes to the edge of the table and still no one came with the bill. 10 minutes later, I finally get up from the table and walked over to the cash praying that someone will take my money so that I can leave. good food and good service should be consistent no matter which day you come, or if you are not aware of their seating procedures. I would have given this place five stars but after the snotty treatment I received today I would barely give them one star. Hopefully they see this review and keep in mind that working in a location attached to a hotel you may be dealing with people who have not been there before or may be tired after a long drive and not know what your rules are. If you are in the service industry, the least you can offer is being NICE! I don't know her name, but the blonde waitress did at least offer me a coffee for the road to make up for the terrible service, but at that point, I just felt like I couldn't trust any food from there so I declined . read more

If you been to one Eggspectation, you been to most of them. The menu is basically the same. The only differentiator would be the location and level of service. At Ruby Foo's, Eggspectation is the other half of the dining area of Otago. The usual collection of perky business peeps mixed with groggy tourists are found here. Some know what they want, others are trying to figure out which way is up as they make their way out of the post party haze. I was somewhere in between. I had their classic breakfast as some of their creative items were too artsy or too large to intake in one breakfast sitting. The food didn't take too long and I do like their breakfast potatoes. Coffee is standard hotel strength - weak. Service was brisk and courteous. Some people have a luv/hate relationship with the chain. Consistency and quality define the experience at Eggspectation. The Montreal chain serves great food and delicious desserts. Although a specialty breakfast location, they are great for a smart evening meal and good drink. Like many restaurants, they have moved to include the service charge in the bill. At 18%, this is reasonable. To date service continues to be excellent, however, diners should beware of any decline in service as the staff may grow complacent. read more

Poor quality food and service. We were a group of 22 people with a reservation for a Sunday brunch. Family from out of town was looking forward to some Mtl famous brunch. With a group of that size, I wasn't expecting it to go perfectly. Little did I know that it would be just the opposite. The table we were seated at was perfect. It was on the side of the restaurant that was apart from other diners. It felt like we had a private room. It was quiet, spacious and exactly what we needed for a family reunion. Unfortunately the good ends there. Once we were seated, it took around a half hour to get water. They seemed to be lacking staff and one poor waitress had to take care of the entire table. I felt bad for the her but she also was kind of unpleasant. Many other items were missing: spoons for coffee, salt and pepper, ketchup, jam...etc. By the time they finally brought these items, our coffee/ meals were cold. I had to leave the brunch early so I asked if the waitress could put my order in first. Though she said yes, my meal ended up coming out last and was cold. It was almost comical how bad it was. The French toast was raw in the middle and was topped with unripe cantaloupe and honey dew with a few rotten strawberries thrown in there for good measure. The side of bacon that I ordered never came so I can't comment on that. My sister had the waffle, again topped with unripe fruit which was also cold and tasteless. In general, the restaurant decor is nice. It isn't cramped like many brunch places are. The big parking lot is convenient. Overall: bland food. Meh service. Skip it! read more

I love the Eggspectation restaurants I've been to SO MUCH, so I was expecting this one to be on a par with the others. I sadly must report that it is not. Gosh, I remember this site being the old Ruby Foos restaurant, and then La Tulipe Noire, and others, all being in a large, sunlit-filled space. No more: they divided the space in two, so two restaurants now are located here, and the Eggspectation side is rather small and it feels cramped a bit. It's like one large room, with utilitarian chairs and tables and little decor to speak of. Okay, so the restaurant interior was a bit lacking. That's not the main reason why I'm rating this place poorly. The menu is still extensive, with tons of breakfast options (thank goodness that hasn't changed!), but the service here was dismal on the morning I dined here. The first red flag came when I asked our server for some Splenda for my cafe au lait (there was only one Splenda in the basket with the sugar packets). She said no problem and then totally forgot all about it and never returned with it. When she took our food order, she was unsmiling and never made eye contact and was abrupt, with no "thank you's" or other social niceties. Our food was late in coming out to us. My cafe wasn't hot (at best, it was tepid). My eggs were tasteless (how can sunny-side up eggs be tasteless? I don't know, I have them every morning. But these were). The bacon was greasy (I even left a few strips which I never do!). I opted not to have the baked beans which come with the meal (probably a wise decision), but I chose to have their Lyonnaise potatoes, reluctantly. And I must say, these potatoes were DELICIOUS. The best part of the whole breakfast. My two friends said their meals were good but they commented on our unfriendly server (one friend said right away, "there's a person who obviously hates her job". And we all had to agree). Nobody came to ask how our meals were mid-way. I like how there's a free parking lot here but, honestly, that's probably the best thing I can say about this place. Ordered for pickup. Place was really nice upon seeing it. As the waiter is being out our takeout he is holding the bag as it it's groceries. He had absolutely no concern that our food (one of them containing eggs benny) were in them. You have to hold the actual container so nothing is destroyed, obviously. I am unfortunately a shy person and didn't say anything but I was not happy. I also don't like to send back food at restos. Poor service, poor food. Only meant for on-site tourists who have no other options! We were there on a Sunday at about noon, the dining room was not too crowded but just busy enough with tourists. The decor is nice, with whitewashed chairs and spacious enough seating. Our waiter was not friendly and rather slow at tending to anything asked of her. We were given two cups of water for three people. I asked for grilled tomatoes instead of their usual potatoes and I got fresh (ungrilled) tomatoes instead. My son's French toast was clearly underdone- I asked it to be placed on the pan for a couple more minutes but it took closer to ten minutes to finally get it back. All the food seemed rather lukewarm, including the toast, which was completely drenched in butter, more than anyone could care to ingest. There seems to be no urgency to anything that's done by the wait staff or busboys. And no one cared to ask how the meal was, despite the person who looked like a manager lurking around the whole time we were there. I suggest to hire people who actually care, and cook the food a little more. Oh, and stop buttering the toast unless requested. read more

This was my second visit to this location. The first visit was excellent from both a service and food point of view. This time it was a Sunday and I know this type of establishment can fill up so I called their number and the voice mail answered saying that they could not take my call and to leave a message (this was at 8 AM). I left my message advising that I would like a reservation at 12:30 PM and if there was a problem to call me. I arrived at the restaurant at the time. The attendant told me there was no reservation, she said her phone was not charged. I responded that is not my fault could we still get a table? She said very rudely, "We cannot seat you" At which point I asked how long a wait and she ignored me and started speaking to the person who arrived after me and took their name and advised them of a 30 minute wait. These folks will be another restaurant to close in this location with customer service like that. She wouldn't even both to check the voice mail to verify that indeed I left that message. So the food was absolutely fantastic, the service was great as well but the lead or supervisor or whoever was management was awful. She was speaking very loudly and very condescending showing the hostess how to enter a bill. Why get mad at someone who seems to be learning? It's super unprofessional. I was staying at the Ruby Foo's attached to the place for two weeks so I ate here quite a few times at different times of the day. My best experience was a Sunday morning and I ate at the bar with their best employee Alex. She was very attentive and awesome at her job. This was the first time I ate there and was looking forward to going back....and then it went downhill. I had ordered French Toast one evening and it was not fully cooked in the middle. Didn't eat it but didn't have time to for them to remake it. They apologized and still charged be for it. I didn't have time to argue so I just paid the bill and left. The service was a 2/5 on this experience with my having to flag down another waiter just to get a refill. A few mornings days later I ordered a eggs Benedict that was good but still had poor service. Two nights later after a long day at work I didn't feel like searching for a place nearby so I thought I would give it another chance. I ordered the French Toast meal again and specifically asked to make sure they cooked it all the way in case it was the same cook. I took two bites and made it to the middle and sure enough it was soggy and tasted like raw egg. I wasn't that hungry so i let the waiter know it was made wrong(again) but didn't want it remade. Pretty sure he didn't even mention it to the cook. Not mentioning anything I wanted to see if the would charge me for it and I was in shock when he did. Not having the energy to argue I just paid it and showed my dissatisfaction in the tip. There attentiveness was piss poor on this visit as well as I sat most of my meal with an empty drink. Stopped going for a few days until the last night I was there as I didn't have the desire to drive out in a blizzard. Ordered the meal with Pancakes. Luckily this occurrence the food was great or I would have lost it. Unfortunately the service was pretty terrible as my drink was empty for 70% of the time. The place has some great($$) smoothies that are good if you are in a hurry. I would have given it one star if it weren't for such a great experience my first time. This place has a lot to learn in the front of the house and back. I was hoping they had a way to leave a survey from the receipt but no luck. Not all locations are the same!!! The pictures had tall fluffy pancakes. What I got were flat and dry pancakes tasting like cardboard. The potatoes tasted like old microwaved leftovers. Stick with the St Catherine location and you can't go wrong!! read more

What a horrible experience! I work next to this location, but had never been, so we went there for lunch. Our waiter, Pierre, provided the worst service that I've ever experienced in a restaurant. Took our order (mine was a burger with mayo and no onions/no special sauces. We had to ask three separate times just to get some water, and when I ordered a Bloody Caesar, he had no idea what I waa talking about, in English OR French. Everyone's order came before mine, and when it did, it was slathered in their special sauce. I brought it up, and Pierre immediately started blaming the cook! He brought it back when I enunciated again: no special sauce, no onions, just mayo. And since all of my colleagues where nearly done their meals, I asked for it to go with a discount. Pierre fought us on that, too. So, he returns when everyone is finished (I still haven't eaten at all), food wrapped to-go. I opened it to check and it had NO sauce and a bunch of onions! I told him that the order was messed up again, and that I wasnt paying for any of it. He then got angry when we asked for the manager, saying the manager was his brother, as though that absolved his responsibility. He told me his brother, Ramsay, was in the kitchen. We asked for a manager on four different occasions, and were then told there was no manager in the establishment; where did Ramsay go so quickly? Either way, things were pretty heated at this point and Pierre kept blaming the cook over and over again, taking no responsibility for his horrible service and attitude. At the end, he came to apologize, said, "I'm sorry, but it was the cool." Eggspectations, who are you hiring to work in your establishments? I will never recommend this place and will be blasting this same story everywhere, including to my many colleagues who work next door.
