This has been a long time in writing, i really try to support local business but I would never go back here. I took my one year old Juki machine in for a service and repair. Eddie was extremely rude to me, trashing me for buying a Juki, questioning why I didnt buy it from him, telling me it was a piece of junk and I should really just trade it in. Also, my gutermann thread was awful and poor quality. He did repair my machine, for a resonable cost, but the customer experience was terrible. Another customer who was in the store at the same time heard our interaction and was moved to let me know she thought Jukis were great machines. I've been a customer for many years, and have always found the customer service and knowledge of the staff to be top-notch. While the materials and machines sold are expensive, I have always found them to be high-quality. When the sewing table I purchased from them ~4 years ago had an issue recently, they identified the issue and were able to order the part for me, and would have been willing to come and install the part had I needed it. This is a great shop if you're looking for a designer sewing machine for purchase. They also have a mid-size selection of fabrics including some specialty fabrics like real silk. I brought my Singer in for repair but they tried to sell me on a new machine instead. Wouldn't necessarily go here for repairs as they are pricey and have more of a sales focus. read more

Today I called and Eddie himself answered the phone. I asked if he had a button presser foot for an old Singer sewing machine. He said he didn't and said that I won't be able to find it and then said "You're better off coming in and buying a new machine from me." Suggesting that I spend $1000+ on a new sewing machine instead of maybe $15 on a presser foot is an absolutely absurd idea. Then he didn't even have the courtesy to say "Bye" when he hung up the phone. That 1-minute phone call was such a turn off. I will avoid this place at all costs. read more

Eddie's Quilting Bee (EQB) is a local business and does not operate within the typical buying paradigm most people are used to. Here are some observations I noticed: 1. When a merchant is not super professional, it can be of several reasons... sometimes they are awful charlatans, sometimes they are just people who like the things they sell and are not career salespeople. I think the description of this store is closer to the later. The negative reviews on Yelp I believe are partly due to poor communication and/or poor service given to an individual. We all know how that goes as one busy day can earn a bad review on a normally good merchant. The days I went, I experienced good customer service and I can understand the frustration some of the Yelpers are having because they are kinda like sewing fans more than sewing salespeople. 2. Sewing machines are kinda like a niche product and thusly, information about them like price can be hard to find. EQB sells a lot of Babylock, which is considered a good brand and that only sells through select retailers and not online. So trying to do a price check is kinda hard. I did my research and figured out that the machine I purchased was on 'sale' at around a ~30% clip from typical retailers. Once again, this is a niche product so it's hard to compare as it is not a common national brand but I think the deal I got was sincere. 3. Babylock. For anyone who doesn't know, Babylock is a Japanese brand. I don't know if the machines are made there but that explains the kinda funky company name. For me, the machine has been working great. I bought a mid-model and the features it has make it so easy to use. I am very satisfied with my purchase rather than buying a cheapo online somewhere. 4. Sewing classes, sewing for beginners, sewing for children -- this is probably not the best experience for people who do not know anything about sewing prior to arriving. I watched maybe 2-3 hours of YouTube videos on sewing machines/reviews/tutorials before stepping foot inside. After the first visit, I did additional research as well. After purchasing, my independent nature has me learning by myself. If this is something that does not describe how your personality is, then perhaps maybe you can make sure you check out multiple stores including EQB to get the most out of your purchase. I think this was a fair look at EQB. I liked Eddie, I thought some of the other salespeople were OK. It is true, beginners might not love being dropped into a sewing fanatics emporium but just like anything - research and knowledge will help you help them help you. read more

I took my Bernina into Eddie after being quoted a repair bid of $900 from a San Jose shop. I wanted another opinion before I decided to go ahead with repair or decide to buy a new machine. Eddie was friendly, personable and very helpful. He asked some questions about the problem I was having and listened carefully to what I was saying. He thought the $900 was extremely high and explained to me how he would proceed and a couple of potential issues with the machine. The repair was done promptly even though he had to order a part. He gave the machine a thorough inspection and found a few other small repairs. When I picked up the machine he took time with me to explain what he had done and to teach me a few things about the machine. He is friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and has great communication skills. And his cost was a third of what the other shop had quoted. I highly recommend him and will happily take my machine back to him. read more

My mother purchased a Babylock machine for me a couple of years ago and the lessons that came with the machine were extremely helpful. The teacher was knowledgeable. I am giving a 3 star review because I am extremely disappointed in the fabric selection and the quilting class choices. I worked at the Quilting Bee many years ago when it was in Los Altos. It had wonderful fabrics way back when. read more

Eddie's Quilting Bee used to be much better, with a wider range of quilting fabrics to choose from. Their downtown Mountain View store (which they haven't been in for many years) was great! I think the online fabric stores have really cut into their fabric sales, which is too bad, because shopping online for fabric is really hit or miss. These days, their focus seems to be on selling sewing machines, which is too bad, because for me, the nearest store I would otherwise go to is in Berkeley, which is a one-hour schlep for me. Sadly, our local Jo-Ann's has closed. That said, they have a good selection of basic (and more-than-basic) quilting supplies, including a variety of colored quilting threads, most of which can be used for everyday sewing. There are some fabric gems as well, just not as many as there used to be. I am giving them four stars because I want to support a local quilting store so that I have a place to go when I run out of thread, which I am leaving to go do right now! read more

I took my machine to him to fix it. He said it would be about a week before I'd have it back and would cost $100.00. Fair enough. He called the next day and said it was fixed, but it wasn't. Went back the next day and he wasn't there. The lady there looked at it, showed me what the problem was and how to correct it. So, he charged me $100.00 for a "problem" that he didn't fix when he SHOULD have showed me how to correct it. He knew better - he's a distributor. Strike 1: in my opinion, he's a thief. When I brought my machine in for him to look at, I had a cheaper brand of thread on the machine because I had a project I was working on on a sewing machine I was switching from. (That thread matched my project.) He disdainfully pulled that thread off my machine, tossed it to the side, said, "Why do you have this on here? You don't want that.", then directed me to the more expensive thread. Uh. Yes, I did want it on there; otherwise I wouldn't have PUT it on there. Strike 2: Arrogance and pushy When I bought my machine at another place where the manufacturer was offering a great sale price, I went there to get that machine. He didn't tell me there was a sale, so he would have let me pay the much higher price so that he could pocket the difference. Then he had the audacity to try to intimidate me by asking why I didn't get it from him and that I SHOULD have gone to him. (When I spoke to him previously about the machine (prior to buying it from the other shop), he didn't tell me there was a sale going on. After the fact, he tells me he would have sold it to me at the same price. OF COURSE he would have. By that time he knew I knew there was a sale he wasn't going to tell me about.) Strike 3: he tries to intimidate his customers. In my opinion, I think he's arrogant, he tries to intimidate his customers, and he's pushy. And finally...strike 4: he's way over-priced. I can go online or better yet, the Granary, and get better prices from friendly, customer-oriented people. And so I do read more

I rarely write reviews, and this one is hard for me; they used to be a big help, and I purchased a number of sewing and overlock machines (probably 5 as I used to help teach young sewers to make quilts) and a huge 'professional embroidery' machine. Plus we spent thousands of dollars of fabric for projects made for non-profit groups. And although just a few years after buying the expensive embroidery machine, they would not help provide a lesson when I was stuck, it was my experience just before this Christmas that affected me both at that time, and is affecting me now as I am struggle to make masks. And the reason for this review now. The day before they closed for Christmas, my most expensive Bernina machine wasn't working so I took it in. I was told that they would charge me to rent a machine for each day until it was returned (including the holiday days they were not open). I asked if I could quickly sew up the front/back of the Christmas stocking on one of the machines in their lesson room. Even to go upstairs to spend an hour on one of their training machines would cost one full day rental rental. Finally the salesperson called Eddie, who agreed to a one day rental so that I could finish my stocking. When I returned the machine on the agreed upon day, there was an invoice for a number of rental days -- BUT, most egregious was when returning my machine, they had placed a piece of fabric over the feedings to show that it was tested. When I took that out to sew masks a few weeks ago, I found that the stitch-plate and the bobbin holder, and bobbin had been removed. Worst of all; the machine does not work as it should. So I am literally pushing the fabric through the machine now - It's frustrating to have spent so much money in a store and be shown how little they valued the confidence we had in them, or the partnership we thought we had. This is a tough one to write. I've been a customer for over 25 years, starting in downtown MV. I've bought fabric there for themed quilts. The selection was always great. My husband bought my sewing machine there. I'd bring it in for service when needed without issue. The employees and the owner were always friendly. When the store moved locations, I still went. I brought my machine in for service a while back. The price had gone up considerably and the customer service was mediocre. I chalked it up to post covid increases and maybe a bad day. I don't use my machine often and primarily for super basic sewing. It started jamming again before the holidays. I brought it in and was charged almost $300 to have it serviced. At the time, I was greeted by the owner with attitude. He wanted me to just buy a new machine. I declined. I was told a few weeks. I received a call with more attitude and was informed it would take more work, more money, and another push to trade it in for a more expensive machine. I declined and agreed to pay more money. I finally get my machine back for another $180. Person behind the counter was polite. But the owner's attitude and arrogance was ridiculous. Busy life didn't have me use it for 2 1/2 months. Found that my bobbin was taken and not returned. I sewed a couple of basic patterns and it jammed again. Nothing seemed wrong, but it was the same issue. I opted to bring it to another company. He fixed it in one day for a fraction of the cost and replaced a piece that I was missing recently. And he was soooo nice! Told me something was left loose inside, which was causing the problem, and implied that some people do that so you'll have the same issue and have to keep bringing in your machine. I've since done a lot of sewing without repeated issue. Needless to say, this business has lost a customer. read more

I decided I wanted to give my daughter the same Bernina model I have (bought in 1995)--a 1080, which I love. Eddie had one and sent it the same day, throwing in a carrying case for free. (I knew of Eddie's from his long-standing support of PIQF.) Packaging was absolutely secure. When my daughter started sewing with it, I couldn't believe how quiet it was, compared to mine--almost noiseless! And of course, worked perfectly. I went to Eddie's this week to purchase quality quilting fabric for several quilts. I was shocked to see how poor their selection currently is and that most of the fabrics they now carry is of inferior quality. Many fabrics they carry aren't even cotton. What a shame. The only other customer in the store asked for one third yard of one fabric and the clerk said their minimum was a half yard. I use and purchase tons of fabric every month and I NEVER heard of a minimum more than a quarter yard. BYE EDDIES!!! read more

Eddie's has a great fabric selection that I can't find anywhere else. I can spend hours there browsing through the aisles for inspiration on my next project, and it helps that the store is well organized and easy to navigate. The problem with too much inspiration is I start more projects than I have the time (and in some cases, the capability) to complete. I took over a year to complete a quilt for my brother, and had no prior experience binding a quilt, myself. By the time I finally committed to finishing the quilt before his birthday, I returned to Eddie's only to find the fabric I purchased for the border (that I wanted to also use for the binding) had been discontinued. Eddie very kindly and patiently helped me go through different patterns to find one for the binding that would work best with the quilt. He has a great eye for design and helped me find the perfect pattern that I am sure I would've overlooked myself. He then gave me about a 15 minute tutorial on sewing a mitered quilt binding, that included measuring and making the binding strips, sewing the corners and overlapping the ends to make them invisible. He was easy to follow and I finished the quilt that afternoon, in under 2 hours. I'm onto my next project now, with much more confidence and proficiency in sewing! read more

I called the store to find out about receiving masks for a non profit organization here in the South Bay and Eddie took my name and information and then invited me to come to the store that day for a batch that had just come in! I walked in this store looking to buy a serger. When I arrived I was told that they were demoing a serger and asked if I would join. So for half an hour I watched, along with another lady, the thousand possibilities of this top of the line Babylock machine. Unfortunately those machines cost about 2000$ more then I was ready to pay for a serger. The other lady bought one and when I let them (Eddie and the sewing teacher who was doing the demonstration) know that it was over my price range, they disappeared in one second then ignored me. They never offered me to look at the other sergers and of course there are no price tags, you have to ask. I would rather drive for hours than having to set foot in this store again. read more

I stopped in to check out the store and find out about services. I bought a high end sewing machine last year and then moved so I needed to find a place near me. I find the owner quite pushy, and he spent a lot of time trying to upsell me. He was maybe joking about how I should have bought my machine from him and the place I bought it from may have lied to me about the machine, but it just seemed shady. I also saw Eddie at one of the shows, try to strong arm a senior friend of mine into buying from him. He actually told her if she didn't buy from him right then, it would cost her more when she came back! She said she didn't care if it was what she wanted and walked away. My Bernina came from California Sewing & Vacuum. Another dealer he likes to bad-mouth. Boo! They call themselves a quilting shop and won't even cut fat quarters! Say what? I actually like the idea of Eddie's QB. It's a large well-lit store, with a good selection of specialty and novelty fabrics. They offer classes on everything from learning to use a serger to t-shirt reconstruction. I have taken about four classes here and the serger teacher was helpful, but she was definitely "encouraged" to push VERY EXPENSIVE products on us (like $500 worth of sewing machine feet). The store hours are good for those us of who work for a living, but I don't think I'll be back. I just hate the money hungry vibe of this place. read more

I'd rather pay extra shipping to get what I need online from somewhere else than going to this store ever again. So that's that, and you have been warned. The entire staff - starting with the owner - does not know what customer service is. Be careful when you buy anything there: check your items, check your receipt, even check the fabrics! The measurements are always short when you get home. And if you have the courage to go back to the store and show them, you will be treated with indifference or just plain rudely, particularly if you talk to Eddie, the owner. He will make you feel like you have just broke his parents most precious procession and he will give you the speech of your life time. During my last visit I POLITELY let him know the fabric I just purchased was one inch short, and you wouldn't believe what I had to listen from this man while he literally ridiculed and lectured me while everyone else in the store stared. Sir, you do not treat a customer like that, EVER. If you see good reviews about this person, read the negative ones too - clearly this person can get nasty quickly, and you could be next. Reading about others' bad experiences with sewing machine service, it's good to know I'm not just picky or crazy. I hate to ding local businesses. I brought my Babylock Quilter's Choice Pro to the store for their standard $100 maintenance. The person who helped me said the needle plate might also need to be replaced for $40 plus labor, or else the technician would try to buff it for $13-14. I asked them to call me to authorize anything over $100. I wanted to talk to the technician and understand if it was worth it to do the buffing or just buy a new needle plate. They never called me, but 5 days later I got a message saying the machine was ready. They presented me with a bill for $135: $100 for the service, and $35 in "additional service" which is what I assume the needle plate buffing cost which I never authorized. The technician left a note saying, "needle plate may need to be replaced next time." So I paid $35 for repairing a part that will only last me another year or so, at which time I get to pay another $40-$50 for a new one. If they had called me, I would have told them to replace it now. By the way, I discovered today that you can buy that part from online retailers for $15-20. I understand that brick-and-mortar stores have to mark up their parts, but that's like a 200%-250% gouge. Based on this experience, I can't recommend this shop for maintenance or repairs. They do have a nice selection of machines, though, and they're well stocked with sewing machine accessories. Their inventory of quilting cottons is unparalleled and of excellent quality. Hence two stars instead of one. read more

I went to Eddie's Quilting Bee with a big project. I needed to make 200 sheer gift bags to go in the celebrity swag-bags for the Golden Globes and the Oscars. When I arrived, two sales people looked directly at me, and continued to fold fabric. I approached the older lady and explained my project. I had a sample bag that I wanted to use as a template and I asked if she knew what kind of material it was "Not really." She was rude and was visibly put out that I interrupted her folding. I asked if she could help me find the fabric. She replied, "You'd have to just go upstairs and look." I asked if I could get some help because I know nothing about sewing or fabric. She rolled her eyes, sucked her teeth, let out a deep sigh and asked the younger sales clerk to help me. After not finding the fabric upstairs, we again approached the older clerk. I asked if we could order this material. "Not really.", she replied. "When would you need it by anyway?" I told her a few weeks. She said, "Oh, no, no, no. Not enough time." I left the store immediately. Don't waste your time at this store. I went to Jo-Ann's Fabrics and found EXACTLY what I needed. The folks at Jo-Ann's were courteous, helpful, and knowledgeable. The clerks at Eddie's didn't even know what kind of fabric Organza was. Isn't this their business?! I'll never go here again. read more

I've been in Eddie's before just to check out the fabric selection and see what they have to offer, and I always find that they have some nicer fabrics that other 'chain' stores don't carry. So, keeping that in mind, I went in today looking for some different brightly colored/patterned fabrics for some small projects I'm working on because I didn't want the standard stuff that I feel like I see at every chain craft and fabric store. I found some really cute things and was excited about the nice selection they had outside on their sale rack. I basically was just in need of a bunch of small cuts to fill in my fabric stash and for some small projects I'm working on. I know making a bunch of cuts can be annoying, but I was spending a good amount of money and figured they would be happy to have my business. I picked out 9 different fabrics (both from sale and regularly priced bolts) to have 1/4 and 1/2 yard cuts made. The associate at the cutting table was helping another customer, so I set my fabric up on the table and walked 5 feet away to pick out some thread that I needed. As soon as I stepped away, the associate and customer she was helping immediately started criticizing my fabric selections saying things like "I wonder what SHE is making...." First of all... why does it matter what I'm making? Secondly... aren't you happy I'm spending money at your store?? I'm still in disbelief about the whole situation, but I just smiled and pretended like I didn't hear what they were saying, gave them my money and left. NEVER going back. I think I'll stick to buying fabric online when I can't find what I need. read more

I waited a while to write this because I was SO IRRITATED when I left the store, I thought once I cooled off I wouldn't be so quick to give a 1. nope. I went here to get help with a school project for my daughter. as soon as I told the guy (I'm assuming Eddie) he walked away, didn't even say anything, and pawned me off to the associate. I did ask him if he was willing to help with a discount or would like to donate the fabric (with credit at the auction - free advertising, right!?) and that's when he walked away. it's fine if you don't want to give me a discount/donate, but just say so. don't be a total ass. he actually mumbled "maybe" or something, so when she was ringing me up I asked again, she went and asked him (she was gone for a while) and came back and told me "no. he said there is already a sale. so it's a good enough price". ok... the girl who ended up helping me seemed extremely irritated to have to help. I don't know about quilting. I've never made a quilt. and so I had to ask questions. SORRY. you're a QUILTING STORE. help me. seriously. I will say that she did try, she helped me with figuring out the amount of fabric, helped me try to choose one that would look good (although when I kept walking around she just threw one at me. when I said I thought the pattern was too big she was like, "OH NO...it's FINE". guess what? I think it's too big. especially now. she was just totally done helping me. I would say that the high reviews on here are mostly from experienced people who don't need help in the store. they might have a great selection, but their workers are totally arrogant and rude. even though I would love to start quilting I won't be going to this store ever again. read more

Plus two stars for some really impressive selections of fabric, including some really hard to find novelty prints (even a print of goats, my fave!). Minus one star for multiple employees with name tags walking past me, looking directly at me, and not even saying hello. I'm not picky about being greeted, but in a store with 4 employees on the floor and not that many customers, you would think they might want to say hello to a customer who was browsing fabric. And minus two stars for hearing a guy (perhaps the eponymous Eddie?) argue with a customer about whether he/they properly fixed her sewing machine, which apparently he personally sold to her several years ago. It was loud, awkward, and made me make a beeline for the door. Also, the layout is weird and mazelike, but the variety of fabric makes up for it. They appear to only carry Bernina and Babylock machines, and I have a Janome, but that's not a problem, just a comment. Honestly, I'd rather order fabric online than come back again. Soooo awkward. I left without buying the goat fabric :( read more

The parking lot entrance can be confusing! They should really have 2 entrances and just 1 exit. Dawn's House of Sewing is the same place as Eddie's Quilting Bee (married couple thing). Met both Eddie and Dawn and told them I was looking for a replacement sewing machine for my wife's birthday. Dawn was kind enough to show me their Baby Lock and Bernia products. Narrowed it down to the Baby Lock Sofia 2 for $800 because it was a decent sewing machine that also offered the ability to embroider. I make it a habit to never do a large purchase on the same day so I took the brochures and info. I was very happy to learn that they offer a free 6 hour class on using your new machine you purchase from them and that they sell sewing and quilting supplies as well as running lots of classes. I'm glad I did my research, because I learned that Brother makes all the Baby Lock sewing machines and that the Baby Lock Sofia 2 for $800 is the equivalent of the Brother SE 400 for $360 (Amazon). I don't mind paying local retailers a bit more, but paying more than double to just get free vs paid classes seems crazy, but maybe I'm wrong. They offer 3 years free classes if you buy your sewing machine there. You just pay the refundable deposit (to make sure you show up for class) and material fees. Some of the embroidery classes are restricted to people who bought their machines from them (Millenium Club). If they were smart they would offer a Brother's sewing class for double the price and help recapture the business they are losing to folks buying their machines elsewhere. read more
