"The Queen of Hearts has shown her face She wants you to…read morebelieve You were never meant to have Aces up your sleeve" (John Hiatt) Super neat and heavily stocked with pretty much anything you'd find in a big box building supply store. Painting, lawn and garden, hardware, tools, grills and barbecue, electrical, and plumbing supplies are all very well represented on their shelves. Parking is never an issue at Ace because it's located in the very spacious Canton Village Plaza. So, if you ever need a can of spray paint, garden hose, specialty light bulbs, barbecue sauce or wood chips for your smoker, you'll definitely find it at Ace. Like the old jingle said, "Ace is the Place".

They had grills and outdoor patio furniture on their lawn since it's the spring season. When we walked in, we were immediately asked if we needed help with finding something. We were looking for exterior paint and the employee walked over and showed us the types of paint they had and was very informative. The prices were a little more than the big box stores but it is family owned, local, and has everything we needed for home repairs/upgrades. They have two locations, Canton and West Hartford. They offer paint recycling. If they don't have the product in stock, they will order it for you since they are affiliated with the Ace Hardware warehouse; the warehouse carries over 80,000 items. They offer many services in-house such as key cutting and propane fills. When you join the Ace Rewards, you can earn rewards with every purchase. Overall, a great asset for the community.

I was thrilled, years ago, when they expanded into a bigger, new location opposite the fairgrounds. Product selection expanded, the store was large, well organized, and brightly lit; parking was easier, and hours of operation extended. Plus they had dogs in the store, which is always a bonus! They also had a full-service paint department so I decided to buy my paint supplies there. Shop local, you know? Unfortunately, their pricing was about 25% higher than I was paying elsewhere. When I mentioned this the owner, Frank, became irritated. I showed him my invoices. He then became angry, not understanding how I was purchasing less for retail than he was paying the franchise, or something along those lines. It was weird. So, I stopped purchasing paints there but did continue buy other supplies. Later, they moved to their present location which continues to have ample parking and easy access, as well as a decent selection of hardware and sundries, to my recall. As a bonus, they carry not only chainsaws, but chainsaw parts and supplies. At the time, the fellow who ran that department, Andy, was great- helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. One day, I needed a couple saw parts which he had in stock; it was his suggestion that I take all that he had, 4 or 5 pieces, and return those I did not need as it would allow his system to automatically re-order. So I did that... Unfortunately, returning the parts was just an awful experience. The cashier at the time, a lady with white/grey hair, could not have been more rude or angry, acting as though I were taking food out of her mouth or committing some sort of fraud by returning the parts as I had been advised to do the previous day. I recall her interrupting a conversation I was having with another customer, an acquaintance of mine, as she began to berate me and demand not only the receipt, which I provided, but also my drivers license to process the return- a purchase of less than $25. I have no idea what makes people think it's acceptable to behave in the manner she did. It truly was a distasteful experience. As a result, I have not entered the store or spent one thin dime there since- though I do purchase thousands of dollars of hardware and supplies, etc. annually. Instead, I chose to patronize another local business which appreciates customers spending their money with them, though it is less convenient for me to do so. Reading through the various reviews here, evidently I am not alone in my experiences.

"The screen door slams, Mary's dress sways Like a vision,…read moreshe dances across the porch as the radio plays" (Bruce Springsteen) We have a three-season sunroom in the back of the house with screens on the windows and sliding door. When that nasty Christmas week windstorm dropped a whole load of tree debris in our backyard, some of it struck the back of the house, and cut holes in a window screen and the slider screen. So we threw the damaged goods into the car and drove them over to Matt at Welden Hardware. Within just a few days, he called us and said the screens were ready to be picked up. They look great and the price was very fair; in fact the job cost just a few bucks under what our homeowner's insurance company allowed on their estimate. Welden is really quite a cool store. We spent some time wandering around when we dropped off the screens and saw a big variety of products -some of which you'd expect to see in a hardware store (electrical, tools, paint, garden equipment) and some surprises, like snowblowers, kitchen supplies, and gloves. Next time you're thnking of driving to one of those big box hardware stores, check out Welden. You'll probably find what you're looking for, and the customer service will be off the charts fantastic.
