I go way,way back to when this was Trawinski's. It's always convenient to have a full service hardware store nearby. I was thrilled, years ago, when they expanded into a bigger, new location opposite the fairgrounds. Product selection expanded, the store was large, well organized, and brightly lit; parking was easier, and hours of operation extended. Plus they had dogs in the store, which is always a bonus! They also had a full-service paint department so I decided to buy my paint supplies there. Shop local, you know? Unfortunately, their pricing was about 25% higher than I was paying elsewhere. When I mentioned this the owner, Frank, became irritated. I showed him my invoices. He then became angry, not understanding how I was purchasing less for retail than he was paying the franchise, or something along those lines. It was weird. So, I stopped purchasing paints there but did continue buy other supplies. Later, they moved to their present location which continues to have ample parking and easy access, as well as a decent selection of hardware and sundries, to my recall. As a bonus, they carry not only chainsaws, but chainsaw parts and supplies. At the time, the fellow who ran that department, Andy, was great- helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. One day, I needed a couple saw parts which he had in stock; it was his suggestion that I take all that he had, 4 or 5 pieces, and return those I did not need as it would allow his system to automatically re-order. So I did that... Unfortunately, returning the parts was just an awful experience. The cashier at the time, a lady with white/grey hair, could not have been more rude or angry, acting as though I were taking food out of her mouth or committing some sort of fraud by returning the parts as I had been advised to do the previous day. I recall her interrupting a conversation I was having with another customer, an acquaintance of mine, as she began to berate me and demand not only the receipt, which I provided, but also my drivers license to process the return- a purchase of less than $25. I have no idea what makes people think it's acceptable to behave in the manner she did. It truly was a distasteful experience. As a result, I have not entered the store or spent one thin dime there since- though I do purchase thousands of dollars of hardware and supplies, etc. annually. Instead, I chose to patronize another local business which appreciates customers spending their money with them, though it is less convenient for me to do so. This store is a great example of what happens when you essentially have a local monopoly. Customer service? Zip. Nada. Beyond directing you to the proper aisle...they can't be bothered. They consistently act like they're doing you a favor. I tried to return an inexpensive electrical fitting I bought - just a couple of days after the purchase - it was unfortunately the wrong size. Unscathed, clearly never used, and in perfect condition. They treated me like I was trying to commit larceny. Also - can't understand why this place is closed on Sundays. Most people want to catch up with projects around the house over the weekend. And, they close on Memorial Day? Patriotic? Or just lazy? Most retail stores - including Walmart and Lowes were open. Again - most people can use access to hardware/homeowner stuff when they're off from work. They're just lucky that Lowes is nearly a half hour away. If it was nearby, no one would bother coming here. read more

Been going here, reluctantly, for a few years, BUT never again! The arrogant employees are too frustrating to tolerate, everything is 3 times the price of others and frankly, it's well worth the extra few minutes to go to a respectable hardware store like Marios in Valatie!!! I dropped off my chain saw to get it sharpened, they kept it 3 weeks, never got a phone call and when I went to pick it up, they told me; Oh yeah, he wouldn't sharpen it because some BS guard was missing... Brought it right over to Marios and they said no problem, was cleaned and sharpened in 24 hours!!! DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND NEVER GO INTO THIS STORE! read more

I am new to the area and went into the store because I needed home improvement items. I had problems on two separate occasions. The first occasion was when I purchased the wrong color of paint - black instead of white. I brought the paint back (full) and the store refused to give me credit because the "lid was dented." Fine. I can understand that, sort of, although I left feeling like an idiot. The next trip, I wanted to purchase an ash can with a shovel to scoop the ashes out of my charcoal grill. I purchased the item, brought it home, and discovered the box did not contain a shovel. After the experience with the paint can, I did not want to go back, so I asked my husband if he would return it. He tried, but came back unsuccessful. Although he had the item and the receipt, he did not have the original credit card (mine) with which the item had been purchased. I had to do it. So I brought the item, the credit card, and the receipt back. They questioned me repeatedly as to why I did not just come back for a shovel. I finally explained that it was because I had ordered the item from Amazon and no longer needed it. They took their time, and a line formed behind me to witness the exchange. It was obvious they did not want to issue the refund. I waited them out, but I was humiliated. They definitely wanted to make it look like I was trying to get one over on them. I finally asked, "Why would I lie about something like this?" It was embarrassing. They finally issued the refund, grudgingly, but I will not be returning to the store. I probably would have spent hundreds of dollars there over the next few years, but I will take my business to Amazon. I can find what I need online, have it delivered free (Prime), and pay less. If it's not what I need, I can return it at no expense and with no hassle. If you do decide to shop there, all I can say is save your receipt, your credit card, and be prepared to do battle if you have to return something. read more

We have bought many things here over 30 years both at this and the previous location and also have used their repair services. I won't be going back. I bought an under cabinet fluorescent fixture with bulb included and after 2-1/2 months the bulb blew. I took it back to Chatham Hardware where they tried to 'mansplain' to me that a 2 month life was within normal range for a fluorescent bulb! They refused to take back the fixture or even diagnose the problem (it turned out the starter had blown). Apparently after 30 days they don't honor, exchange or accept returns of any merchandise. With Herrington's around the corner and Mario's in Valatie, both willing to help customers and stand by their merchandise why would I ever need or want to deal with these people ever again? read more

Absolutely the best with the selection of a big box and small town service and knowledge. They have yet to make a mistake directing me to what I want -- aisle 12 right side top shelf. Bingo it was right there. When they didn't have a filter I needed they ordered it for me and called me in two days to let me know it came in. When asked which was the strongest duct tape, they recommended X and it is still holding six months later. read more

Ace is locally owned and full of friendly faces, which is always helpful when faced with a home repair problem. I'm one of those people who isn't afraid to do a little research and try to fix something on my own. I can't even count the number of years or times I have come to this store for advice and have never been steered wrong. They have a little bit of everything and a lot of knowledge on home repair. In fact, when I got married back in 1992, and this store was at a different location, I registered for tools here. No bride had ever registered for tools before, but the owner jumped on the wagon and even helped me make a list of what I'd need for a long, healthy tool-owner life. Oh, and if you're in town and need a dog fix, they even have pups roaming around. read more

This store has a lot. Everything from farm fresh eggs to the kitchen sink. And the only place open sundays:). They dont accept amex or discover. Just visa and MC. Not a big deal to me though read more

Sorry about this guy's lightbulbs, but there are signs all over the store reading "lightbulbs not returnable". Must be from New York City and thinks he is special. Chatham hardware best hardware around. Half the things in our house came from Chatham Hardware and they helped us find the things we needed. read more

I bought some halogen light bulbs here only to find out that I had purchased bulbs with a wattage that exeded the rating of my light fixtures. When I tried to return them I was told by the manager that he could not take them back even though the sealed blister pack container was not opened. He explained to me that the wear and tear on the bulb that occured on its trip from the hardware store to my house and back would reduce its useable life. It occured to me, as I drove away, that these two light bulbs were manufactured in China. I am trying to understand how a trip overseas on a cargo ship from China then to Chatham, New York via air freight and cargo truck put less wear and tear on these light bulbs than the 16 mile journey to and from my house. Sorry Chatham Hardware, you've lost my business. You don't appreciate your customers. read more

Great people and almost always have what I need. They have to draw the line somewhere on some policies. They'er not a large national conglomerate with unlimited resources, they'er a local company trying to make a living. If you have a small - medium sized DIY project, or need something in a pinch, this is the place to go! read more

The staff knows their stuff and they have a really big selection for a small town hardware store. Sometimes I go in thinking I need something more expensive than I do and they make sure I get only what I need. I can't say enough good things. read more
