Gary not only walked me downstairs and took all the time needed to find me one little $0.69 screw, but because it was a specialty screw I needed and this one was a little long, he actually grinded and polished it down to fit my RV door! And didn't charge any extra. I have never experienced this high level of customer service before, he was amazing. So I asked if he would help me with a wrench needed to adjust my Vespa mirror. I'm looking at it he said instead I needed a hex key and got me one that fit! This was the best hardware store I've ever been to, waaaayyyy better than any Home Depot. I only wish they existed in my home town in Irvine CA, I wouldn't go anywhere else. This hardware store is what hardware stores used to be like when I was little, with everything under the sun and friendly knowledgeable people, who are plentiful in this store. Why Carr Hardware Lenox Has Lost My Trust and Business…read more I bought 2 sodastream refills at the Lenox store. The total came out to $47.98 or $23.99 each including tax. The same refill online through sodastream is $16.99 with free shipping for purchases of $65 or more ($18.05 a bottle including tax). Meanwhile, at this very moment in the heart of SF, you can purchase the same refill at my former hardware store Cliff's Variety for $18.46 including tax. Why was I being charged nearly 6 dollars more per refill by Carr Hardware? I was shocked when I looked at my receipt when I got home. What gives? I called the store and questioned the manager, Patty and explained the price discrepancies I had been finding. She was dismissive at first citing "price increases" as her justification. I told her I would complain about my experience online and then she said "corporate sets the prices and she would check and get back to me." I have yet to receive a return call. It's upsetting that post-covid so many businesses, local independents and large corporations alike, are willing to gouge their customers and their community. After some online research, my experience with Carr Hardware's refill pricing is comparable to complaints I had read about online by Walmart customers. I will be reporting my experience to the Better Business Bureau and caution you to be vigilant at the checkout counter if you shop at Carr Hardware. They've lost my trust and my business. UPDATE: Refills are roughly $18 at Staples Pittsfield

I have visited Home Depot many times over the past 25 years because they are the only store in town…read moreother than local hardware stores. I try to avoid Home Depot whenever I can. The store is usually a mess and there is never anyone around to help you. Occasionally, there is someone that is helpful and knowledgeable, but those times are few and far between. The last visit was to purchase a new microwave during tax free weekend. I expected the store to be busy, so I arrived early. The microwave I wanted to purchase was not in stock (Of course), so I asked to order it and have it delivered to the store. I was told by the associate that it could not be delivered to the store, and would have to be delivered to my home. I asked if there would be a delivery fee, and was told that there shouldn't be because he had just sold a new refrigerator that was going to be delivered at no charge. I placed the order, and when we got to the delivery page of the order, I was informed that there was indeed a $39.00 fee for delivery. I asked why it couldn't be delivered to the store at no charge, and was told he didn't know. It was busy, so I let it go with the intention of contacting Home Depot directly, but I wasn't happy. I contacted Home Depot through their website Chat window and the person I was chatting with told me to go back to the store and ask the store manager why there was a delivery fee. When I asked to speak with his supervisor, I was told it would be a 5-10 minute wait, and at the 11 minute mark, I was hung up on, and the chat window disappeared. When I returned home, I emailed HDCares.com and asked the same questions and found out that not only do they not care, they don't respond to emails. Pretty disappointing. I will give their delivery service a good mark because the microwave was delivered in 4 days, and they communicated well via email. My suggestion is to avoid Home Depot whenever possible. There are a couple of Lowes stores, but they're over an hour away. I have always found Lowes to be a clean, neat and well run store, at least the 3 I have visited in the past few years. When walked in and told the woman behind the counter that I had an order, it immediately became clear from her voice that it was The same woman I spoke with on the phone. But she acted like I was someone new to her. I told her I had an order, and she acted as if it was the most preposterous thing anyone has ever said. She screwed her face up and said, lwhat are you talking about, for what?" I won't type out the whole in exchange, but she happily walked me out pointed at a few things and said, "they're right here! Mark came quickly, knew the product line (although he was not specifically family with my equipment) and was experienced and knowledgeable enough to be able to quickly diagnose and fix my problems, based on what he knew about other equipment from the same manufacturer. He was quick - because of his diagnostic skills and his knowledge of how to repair - and affordable, and his repairs have held up over time. He is old-school, someone who cares about his customers and his job and takes the trouble to do it well. I called him because of a problem (that eventually self-repaired) and he called back the same day, even though he was on vacation in another state, to give me what help and support he could over the phone, and to arrange to come and fix things as soon as he got back. That's the kind of work that gives me confidence and peace of mind. I recommend him most highly.
