TLDR: When you're at the heart of Japan town, you have to embody the nation in all the good ways…read more Kui Shin Bo, embodied the nation's backbone of being average to above average in multiple things. This place covers many of the basics (rolls, ramen, tempura, yakisoba, teriyaki, unagi). I really only see it as a jack of all trades, but a master of none. It doesn't mean that this restaurant has no place in Japantown, but it doesn't inspire confidence when it's located in an isolated region of the mall with less foot traffic, while its competition on the other wing has lines longer than the location's capacity. Black Garlic Ramen: It's always a mystery to me how black garlic improves a bowl of ramen. My expectations, however, remain the same. How thick is the broth? How clean is the broth when consumed? What is the quality of the chashu? Do I get enough noodles? I think the best part of this meal was the amount of soup they give, and the chashu was very good. It sucks that the chashu is tiny, but they did very well. I feel that the noodles were those wholesale ramen noodles that were portioned, and the garnish was fine. The broth was okay, 3.5-ish stars in terms of taste. Dynamite Roll and Volcano Roll: I think it's a problem if I have trouble identifying which is which. I can tell you that both are good enough to try, and the Volcano Roll comes with raw fish. Both come with a good crunch and a good sauce, but like most Japanese places that lean heavily into the rolls, good luck finding out what you ordered and what you just ate. Ambiance: Very classic Japanese. They're really at their best to convince you that you're in Japan. It may get tight during a busy day though. Service: Standard. You order, your water gets refilled, you pay, you leave.

I was really craving sushi, so I decided to stop by Domo and it definitely did not disappoint! The…read morerestaurant was clean, organized and you could actually smell the fresh food before even walking through the door. They also offer both indoor and outdoor seating, which is a nice option. I started with the miso soup and it was delicious. For sushi, I ordered the Crunchy California Roll, Dragon Roll and the Domo Roll. Yes I was that hungry haha! Every roll was packed with fresh ingredients, the fish tasted incredibly fresh and the presentation was beautiful. My absolute favorite was the Domo Roll. Seriously no kidding, it was so good! To top it all off, the staff were friendly, welcoming and made the experience even better. I'll definitely be coming back.

The roll is so flavorful and just melts in your mouth. Unfortunately though, my last visit was honestly RUINED by poor customer service. I understand the model of first come first serve for their seating and have participated every time. However, this time I have a torn meniscus and called ahead to ask if I could be put on the waitlist since my mobility was very limited and the operator assured me there was no wait and I would be seated right away. 10 minutes later when we arrived that was not the case and we ended up being 4 parties behind in the line, which is fine things happen unexpectedly I totally understand. What really was upsetting was when we were told our table was next and being cleared, 10 minutes passed by so I went and asked again clarifying I could not stand for too long due to the injury. The server was very rude and said I had to wait to be told to sit, even though he had just told us we would be seated soon, and then proceeded to lie and tell me the open table was for the owner. The patron sat the table was definitely not the owner and I even heard him say he called and asked for the table for a first date. It felt really humiliating and upsetting to be passed up and continue to wait with a significant injury. And then when we finally were sat, at the bar top, the same server was just really rude and cold. It was an overall upsetting experience and I hope you never let your staff treat customers like that again. Overall, I do love the sushi but after this past experience I don't think I can come back.

Conveyer belt sushi for the win!…read more I came here last minute because I needed somewhere quick to eat and I was by myself, so luckily there was one seat left (during busy dinner time on a weekend, no less - other places had long waits) Here in America the conveyer belt sushi places haven't really impressed me, but being that this one is in Japantown, it's pretty decent. If there isn't something on the conveyer, you can always ask for it. They were cutting up real, whole fish so you know it's fresh at least. Service was great, super quick and the "chefs" were responsive. The menu is nice, with lots of drinks to choose from as well. Cuts were not authentic but still meaty. Pricing can be on the higher side, depending on what you like. But others have mentioned it can be cheap as you like or expensive as you like at places like these, as they are priced essentially by the choice of fish and how it's prepared. Atmosphere was lively for a weekend night, but I have been here during the week as well when it's less busy. It can be tight if it's full (get to know your neighbor!) but it's more than adequate. Always a fun experience and I have , and will be back.

With only 8 seats, the experience is intimate, you get front views to the chefs preparing each of the 24 courses! The fish selections were fresh, delicious and the apps were amazing too. The reviews were great so wanted to come and check this place out for myself and it did not disappoint! Chef Au was friendly and talked to us about his life in Japan, we loved the interaction. All in all 10/10 experience, 10/10 quality of all the dishes and 10/10 ambiance! Definitely worthy of the Michelin accolades it's received!

Oma San Francisco Station is an omakase restaurant inside Japan Center in San Francisco Japantown…read more They offer 3 menus: Mizuho with 24 items, Sakura with 16, and Tsubame with 12. The location is unusual, as the restaurant is open to the mall, which is a bit disruptive. I came for the 8:30pm seating, but the previous guests were still finishing, so I had to wait until 8:45pm. The staff did not seem very concerned. Bad start. You could also hear the mall cleaning crew during dinner, which was not very pleasant. I ordered the 24-item Mizuho Menu, as did all the other guests. There were 5 guests in total (the restaurant can seat up to 8 people). Here is the menu I was served at the end of May: 1. starter: ama ebi cracker with caviar, pickled lotus root with shaved bonito, crab salad 2. nigiri 4x: isaki, iwana, myabi tai, kanpachi 3. sashimi: chutoro, hotate with caviar, umi masu, sawada 4. nigiri 8x: hirame, suzuki, inada, kurodai, shima aji, kamasu, otoro, aged A5 wagyu, kinmedai 5. hot dish: miso soup with inari and shrimp head, hokkaido uni with marinated ikura, black cod, umi masu with raw yellow egg and caviar 6. dessert: matcha ice cream with strawberry Frankly, the food was excellent. The starter was not very creative, but the nigiri were great. The sashimi selection was very nice, with some fish you do not see as often in omakase menus, such as isaki, iwana, and myabi tai, a kind of tai. Sawada was delicious and is always a good inclusion. We asked for some wasabi and received a small cup of kizami wasabi, a chopped wasabi with a slightly crunchy texture, which was a nice touch. For the nigiri, all the classics of a good omakase were present: otoro, kinmedai, shima aji, uni, hotate, and wagyu. Kamasu was also included, and it is one of my favorite fish. It is also worth noting that they age both their beef and their tuna, including the otoro that was served. A few pieces were torched, maybe a few too many. Overall, the service was not memorable, although chef Ron Au was friendly and nice. The place itself felt a bit questionable, and my expectations were not very high after the beginning of the meal. But the food was truly excellent, and for that reason I think it deserves 5 stars.
