They do a good job at explaining things and talk about preventative things since the eyes can show some signs of things that might not be doing well in the body. They then relocated to Gateway Plaza near Office Max and what used to be Choice. I've had both Dr. Ogata, the main Optometrist and fill in Optometrists. It's really easy to get an appointment here, since they've been closed during the Pandemic they are quite busy now and have appointments on weeknights which is good for those that work during the day and also over the weekends on Sundays. The door is locked and you have to call or if they see you standing they unlock the door. You immediately get your temperature checked with a standing thermometer and there's a sanitizing station right after. At this point with my eyesight, I just want to get my prescription and be done with it. I previously worked for an Ophthalmology office so I get the clinic flow. Dr. Ogata is very friendly and finds topics to connect and talk with you about which makes you feel comfortable and there's not much of a wait. I give it 4 stars with the choice and prices of the glasses and contacts. I know it is of quality but Costco contacts deals are cheaper, and so is ordering trendy frames online which can be hard to compete with. I like to do things all at once and they didn't have my prescription to trial contact lenses so I have to go back for a follow up. I would give it 5 stars if I was able to just walk out and be all done.

I checked in easily and quickly at the front reception desk. Had a mild wait while I scribbled out some paperwork and and then after a few more minutes, went to get my eye exam I saw Quan Dao for my exam. I've seen her twice before. The last two times were quite interesting. I had a routine eye exam and then I suggested if the prescription was simple enough that I could get it fulfilled at Costco. Oh, that was not the right decision for me. My prescription IS simple but Costco had to cut my lenses four times and they still failed. They sent me back for another eye exam to make sure my prescription was "correct". If there was a "mistake" in the prescription then I was allowed a free redo. There was no mistake in my prescription, but there was some room for a fudge factor. Which changed the prescription enough to get me a free redo at Costco. That was the whole point of the exercise. Well, the exam this time went smoothly. I suspected there was some very minor change to my prescription which showed up mostly in my nearsightedness. I felt I might benefit from some extra power in the lens there. Bingo. That was the exact result of my new exam. This was such a minor change to my prescription that Quan Dao and I debated if it was worth it to get another pair of glasses. In the end, we decided the problem could be solved with a minor upgrade in a pair of cheap readers. These cost anywhere from two bucks to 20. Then we both recalled the Costco experience and shuddered. We both agreed it was not worth going through anything like that again not for this minor prescription change. Checking out was a breeze. I just needed to pick up the printout for my new prescription and it was done.

I think he is the first and only O.D. at this Costco location, and my wife and I have had exams here since the time he started, which was about 30 years ago. Since a large component of any eye exam is the patient's subjective judgement of a series of better/worse images, the patient needs to feel comfortable and at ease. Emotional tension can lead to physical tension which is likely to skew the results if the patient recoils even slightly from the phoropter. Word on the street is Dr. Kamei may be retiring soon. The new Vallejo Costco is likely going to have a new O.D. also. Best wishes Dr. Kamei, but I know many others have the same opinion of your practice.
