This is incredibly sad. I can't believe I have to write this. Last night we had the most horrific experience at Eastside. A place my family and my friends have gone to for many years. It started with horrible service, a waitress named Diane. She proceeds to insult my girlfriend who has a severe anxiety disorder when she's taking too long to decide on a drink order. This immediately sends her into an anxiety attack from which she wouldn't recover the rest of the night. She presses our table over and over again, not letting us even breathe. Brings us overcooked food, makes us feel guilty for sending back severely overcooked steak, even to the point of attempting to force my girlfriend into PROVING THE STEAK WAS OVERCOOKED BY CUTTING INTO IT IN FRONT OF HER. This is unacceptable. The salmon I had was chewier than anything, as if it sat under a heating lamp for ages, or was left in an oven way too long. Talking to the waitress and management lead to a comped single meal, and condescending remarks from the owner and manager. Even calling back. I'm horrified by this, as I've looked up to East Side for many years. It's gone down hill. Please don't bother. Go to one of the many establishments within walking distance that care about you and your order rather than this dinosaur cranking out overpriced, overcooked steaks with waitstaff right out of a truckstop. read more

Came into East aside for New Years Day. Ordered the Popcorn Shrimp and Gumbo to start off. I definitely recommend the Gumbo, the right amount of spice and flavor. The Popcorn Shrimp was great! The breading is light and the dipping sauce is awesome! Got the Seafood Risotto for the entreé. It comes with mussels, shrimp, and scallops. Back here after many years post COVID, as mentioned before this place has been here for at least 40 years and maintains a strong presence in the area. Interior is pretty nice and staff does a good job with attentive service but sadly the food here is just as it always has been, mediocre run of the mill, middle of the road food, some interesting selections but it falls flat on taste and quality. I mean it's not bad but to think in high school I thought this was the "fancy" restaurant of the area is now sort of humorous. Still, it's probably the only restaurant in this town aside from Fitzwillys that has some sort of decent food. Hit or miss depending on what you order. read more

The manager, after not coming by until we asked to speak with her, was offended to be bothered and let us know they were understaffed because no one wants to work. Not sure how it's possible to have been coming to Northampton every July (for the big horse show) for almost 45 years and never been to the Eastside Grill? Glad I was able to stop in and try it. My mom and I had a great meal a few weeks back - she had been there a few times before with friends. Our waiter was Ethan ( I think that was his name, nice guy originally from The Cape) and the service was very, very good. We shared an oyster appetizer and ate every last bit. Loved the salads. I had the scallop special and my mom had a piece of steak. Both entrees were delicious, the scallops especially. Perfectly cooked and tender with a yummy sauce. We were entertained during our meal by the ladies sitting in the booth behind us who complained non stop about their food ("too much gristle" LOL) - not sure where their food came from because ours was absolutely deelish! The first thing that you should know is that the correct address for this restaurant is 19 Strong Avenue, across from the train tracks. The restaurant is located on the right side of Strong Avenue, next to the municipal parking lot. From the outside, Eastside looks like a traditional New England gray clapboard house with lots of windows, and white shutters. There's an outdoor covered patio for al fresco dining in the warmer weather. Inside you'll find two large dining rooms as well as a bar area where guests may also dine on a separate bar menu. The Eastside Grill specializes in creative American fare, including grilled steaks, freshly prepared seafood and Cajun / Creole cuisine. Everything at the Eastside Grill is made fresh daily from the highest quality ingredients including the salad dressings, gumbos, chowders, sauces and desserts. The steaks and chops are fresh Midwestern grain fed beef, which is the highest quality choice beef available. They also serve only fresh, never frozen chicken and fish. The menu has all sorts of tasty appetizers including freshly-shucked oysters, New Orleans-style fried oysters, garlicky mussels, crab cakes, seared tuna, blackened alligator, Cajun-fried cauliflower, fresh salads, and homemade chowders, soups, and gumbo. Now the dinner menu is an eclectic blend of steaks, chops, duck, pork, lamb, chicken, seafood, and vegetarian entrées with lots of Cajun / Creole-inspired food on the menu. I started my feasting with a cup of their homemade alligator, Andouille, and seafood gumbo. Sorry Darren, but this was THE best gumbo outside of New Orleans! All of the entrées came with a salad, so I had a small mixed greens salad before diving face-fist into (I mean, "daintily nibbling upon") a bowl of their New Orleans Barbecue Shrimp which was pan-seared, head-on jumbo shrimp in a traditional New Orleans dark roux / barbecue sauce, served over cheesy grits and baby spinach and accompanied by toasted French bread for sopping up the sauce. Wow!!! For dessert, my client forced me to try their warm New Orleans-style bread pudding which was the traditional fresh-from-the-oven sweet, bread custard topped with a bourbon sauce and pecans, raisins and coconut. I couldn't resist! My week on the road was done, and I deserved to oink all the way back to my hotel. :-) According to Eastside's website they have won numerous awards including Best Restaurant and Best Seafood Restaurant in the Pioneer Valley. Such a bummer! My partner and I went here for date night last night and regret it. We wanted to go to a place down the street that had a longer wait, but we decided on eating here when the host said it'd only be a 15 minute wait. It took about 40 minutes to be seated. The cocktail while we waited was the best part of our night. The bar staff was nice and our drinks were good! We got the whole belly clams dish and the blackened filet steak tips and scallops dish. The dishes were $32 each so we were looking forward to a delicious fancy meal! Our waitress brought us the wrong dish and acted annoyed about it which was weird. Then, our food took so long to arrive. About 50 minutes. When it arrived we were very underwhelmed. The portions were strangely small. The steak tips and scallops were SO spicy and very overcooked. I couldn't eat it. The meat was so tough and abnormally spicy. The mashed potatoes were okay. The whole belly clams were okay but there weren't many of them. There were even less fries. We took one bite of the coleslaw we wanted and couldn't eat it because it was so gross. We didn't mention it to our waitress because she was basically never to be found, not very friendly or polite, and after waiting nearly 2 hours at this point, we just wanted to eat and leave. It didn't seem very busy, but our waitress was never around, and when she was around, the encounter was brief and while she was just walking by. We waited a long time after finishing eating to get our check, and when we gave our payment, it took even longer. This is a decidedly unpretentious but excellent eatery in the center of the pioneer valley. The component of the food all tasted very fresh, particularly the seafood. The food was fun and the service natural without fawning. A full bottle of wine is amazingly well priced and the selection is excellent. Sat at the bar and ordered oysters on the half shell to start. Very fresh and delicious. Drinks were well made however the stemware was not cleaned on the bottom and my drink kept sticking to the napkin. Salads were good. My main course of blackened prime rib was so-so and lacking in flavor. My wife enjoyed her etouffee and she is a real creole nut having spent time in Louisiana. We ordered delivery from Eastside the other night, during a visit to Northampton. The food was delicious! I had shrimp Genevieve and my husband had fish and chips. We were a bit worried that his might be soggy but not at all!! The best part of the experience was how receptive the person I ordered from was...and when I asked her if she had forgotten to ask about a tip, she said they feel uncomfortable doing that! Absolutely delicious!!!! Fantastic ambience and terrific menu! We started with a dozen oysters. They were really fresh and amazing. Next we got the side salads with the gorganola vinaigrette, which were excellent. For main courses, we got the Butternut Squash Ravioli with spinach and gorganzola. The ravioli are homemade, fresh, and delicious. The butternut squash filling had a creamy consistency and wasn't too sweet, which was perfect. It's also a really generous serving. We also ordered the Cod with Breadcrumbs and Lobster Bisque as well as the Crawfish Etouffee. Both were fantastic. The cod was fresh and really flavorful, atop a delicious lobster bisque. The etouffee was stuffed with crawfish and excellent as well. For dessert, the bread pudding was excellent. I will say, if you are craving a more typical Italian pasta dish, that is not their forte. A couple things to consider about this review. We attended at the height of lunchtime on Mother's day 2018. For a somewhat pricier place the food was substandard. We ordered "Tips & Scallops", "Duck special" and "Scallop risotto". In addition to our entrees we received bread and butter, and salad. The bread was warm but it seem fresh baked and wasn't especially tasty. The salad was European meaning very small almost like an accoutrement. The tis & scallops were over seasoned and not edible. Our server failed to mention they were canjun blackened and so it was requested to switch it out for the duck. We were told other patrons "rave about the Duck and say its the best they've ever had". While it was not i edible it was poorly prepared and not tasty. The decor was tired and worn. It was all perfectly functional but generally speaking not anything more than that. Since it was very busy I'll give them a pass on the ambience and service. On the positive side the greeter and wait staff were enthusiastic, positive, solicitous and made every effort to try to be assessable. I have been to this restaurant many times and the food has always been very very good. This was not the problem with this visit. My friend and I walked in at 8:45 on a Sunday night. We asked if they were still serving, and they said "yes"... with major hesitation. We took seats at the bar and were informed ( in a less that hospitable tone). that we had to order now because the kitchen was closing in ten minutes. At this point... the bartender stood right in front of us... literally staring at us... waiting for an order. I was in the food industry for many years. If the kitchen closes at 9:00 and your order gets in by 9:00, then you as the guest are GOOD. I get it. It sucks for the waitress. You are closing. Your job, however, is to not make the guest feel unwelcome and rush them out the door because YOU want to get home. We both ended up ordering something from their awesome and very varied menu that we really didn't want to eat because we were made so uncomfortable and bullied into ordering as soon as we sat down. Two people, one appetizer, two meals. two thumbs down! I am happy to pay good money for quality products, great food and great service, but not when the food is bad. LOUISIANA FRIED OYSTERS: overcooked. it was so dark and crunchy I wonder about if it was "lightly" breaded. Sauce was flavorful and gave it the moisture it needed. JAMBALAYA: chicken was dry and inedible. Spicy but not flavorful. Had the heat but not flavor. BLACKENED TIPS & SCALLOPS: A plentiful mound of juicy steak tips topped with something I discovered were scallops. I tasted one and discovered the blackened part was not spice but char and a chewy inside. Waiter said the blackened refers to the spices. I pointed out that there were no spices and that it was simply burned... Certainly not a blackened Louisiana style dish. He took the entire plate back. When he returned with a new plate, it had new seared scallops cooked perfectly. The steak on the new plate however looked like a different order. It was a much smaller mound with fewer and smaller pieces of meat, also charred on the outside and not cooked medium as ordered. Sadly, one of the WORST meals I have ever eaten. This is not the place to go for clean food. The restaurant itself is run down, outdated and dirty. The food is mass produced and also not clean. Lots of gloppy sauces and and there is absolutely no love in their food. The butternut ravioli was nothing as described on the menu-the spinach was drowning in some tasteless creamy mess and the dough was completely raw and stretchy and sticky. DISGUSTING! I ordered the Jambalaya and it was really dry, not super flavorful and the chicken in it was super tough and overcooked. My girlfriend ordered the seafood risotto which she loved, the risotto was tasty and the sauce with it was very flavorful. Service was ok, a little slow and our waitress didn't check in on us for a while after we got our food, I was going to say something about the jambalaya but being quite hungry I got tired of waiting and just dealt with it. Lots of corners were cut in quality from the "jumbo" shrimp being barely an ounce in weight each (for $12) down to the $30 8oz steak that was barely palatable even at med rare, undercooked green beans, and mashed potatoes that I've had better in an elementary school cafeteria. I tried to relay some info to our server, about the shrimp but was quickly cut off and disregarded. This review started at three, but reviewing what I said, dropped it to a 1 star. While visiting the area this past week, we happened upon Eastside Grill and were VERY delighted with our entire experience. From other reviews, it looks like its a crap-shoot as to whether or not your experience was as good as ours. Our server, Melissa, was super-friendly, attentive, knowledge (and if she didn't know the answer about something, she'd happily go ask the kitchen staff) and efficient. Even some of the other staff that we happened upon were also very courteous and helpful! We decided to have some fun with ordering our food, so we stuck to soups, salads and appetizers for our meal (all small "tapas" style plates) and we enjoyed some rocking cocktails and tapped craft beers. They had a good selection of both. But the reason for the 5-Star review: The food was as enjoyable as Melissa was! We had Seaside Chowder, Pan-blackened Scallops, Crab cake, Spiced Seared Tuna, charred Brussel sprouts, Lobster and Goat Cheese Ravioli and Cesar salad with white anchovies. EVERYTHING was delicious! Anyone that follows my reviews knows that exemplary service is paramount for me and my dining partners (whomever may be with me at the time),rating much higher on my dining experience list than the food itself! You can have mediocre food served to you, but if it's done by a fabulous staff, it actually makes your overall experience MUCH more pleasant, than having a cold, crabby and/or apathetic server UNenthusiastically going through the motions while serving you outstanding food! read more

Our waitress appeared very busy with other tables so it felt like an inconvenience when we had to wave her down to request some basic items like straws for the glasses of water, or simply to place our orders. One member of our party is in a wheelchair and used a paid Transporation van service to pick her up which allotted her 2 1/2 hours. Unfortunately, she did not have a chance to eat because her van service had arrived to pick her up and her food had not come to the table in time. The main course meals were not what we expected. The hamburger was bland and extremely dry, and the French fries were way over cooked (dark crunchy exterior and almost no interior texture). The steaks were the same way. I had a wonderful dinner the service was outstanding the food was hot prepared perfectly and appeasing to the eye. My boyfriend and I came here for his birthday dinner around 6 pm last Saturday night. We put our name in and they said it would be about a 30 minute wait which we were pleasantly surprised by! We went and dropped some bags off at our car and returned and our table was ready after about 15 minutes. Our waitress was very friendly, she brought us bread a few minutes after we sat down and our drinks came out quickly. The grapefruit martini was amazing, even my boyfriend (who doesn't like martini's) enjoyed it. I ordered the linguine with shrimp and he got a lobster dish with asparagus and mash potatoes. We both loved our meals, the sauce on my pasta was amazing. We will definitely be back to enjoy more of this amazing food! The only downfall was, I mentioned to our waitress briefly that is was my boyfriends birthday but she did not offer or say anything about it. The table next to us had a birthday at it and they sung and brought a little desert over to them. Oh no! What happened to the place to which we used to be willing to drive two hours round trip for dinner?? Had I done a review a few months ago I would have given perhaps four stars. Went back recently and realized instantly that something had changed and not for the good. The menu used to be larger, which others have noted can sometimes be a bad thing, but some of the items we loved had been removed from it. Some of the items that remained had notable price increases. We have never had bad service here and I will start by saying that service remains to be very good. But, did the kitchen staff change? Simply, the food was a general disappointment. The calamari app was over-breaded and skimpy in quantity. The jambalaya we used to really enjoy was unrecognizable from past experience. Gone was the tasty sauce in which it would come and the plentiful seafood was replaced with four shrimp and five or six muscles. The chicken was too tough to tackle. The only enjoyable element was the andouille sausage. The chicken etouffe was not much better. It too had chicken that was more like pieces of white leather. The green beans that were served as a side to the chicken pignoli were shriveled and clearly from a past dinner service. For about $45 per person, you should expect and receive much better! As mentioned, we used to love it here and because of that history, we will go back and give it another chance. Went again to this place hoping that they had addressed many issues from previous visits. Service was very friendly and helpful, but not quite as fast as I would have expected from a classy place. It was, however, MUCH better than the quality of the food. I bought two rib eye steak dinners priced at $21 each. Both steaks were low quality, with lots of gristle. The salads we were served were small with minimal amounts of dressing. The garden salad was lettuce with a small amount of onion and about six tiny slivers of carrot. The Ceasar salad was bland. The baked potato served with one of the steaks was very small and barely warm. The roasted potatoes served with the other steak were inedible....cold and nasty. I have continued to patronize this establishment because of great dining experiences I had there many years ago. However, this meal is the final insult to my efforts. I will not be going back. From the looks of many of the reviews that others have posted about East Side, I am not alone. It's really too bad. I will miss it. read more

I went here with a bunch of co-workers for the first time and we tried a little bit of everything! The PROS -service was very prompt, courteous and pleasant -food was served with good timing so that we could finish each course -portebello mushroom costini was super good -cider cocktail was good -apple/squash bisque was on point -parking lot has validation/reimbursement if you dine there which is $5, there is other parking too if you can get a spot The CONS -entrees tasted a bit sub par overall -the lobster/shrimp asian dish didn't meld well flavors-wise -oysters lacked flavor -key lime pie was just ok (I've had better from the grocery store bakery) Overall I was a little disappointed in the execution of Eastside Grill. I really wanted it to be awesome all the way around, but the key meal, the entrees did not deliver. The ideas sounded good on the menu, but most in my party, including me would not have ordered the same thing again. The Eastside Grill has really gone downhill. This used to be a good place to come to eat in a casual, but nice atmosphere with family - a step up, in other words. We came and were really disappointed. We started with portobello crostini and they did this very well! The bread served ahead of the meal arrived warm and crusty, but not terribly rich in taste. The butter was served in packaged wraps. The salads were mixed. House salads with dressing on the side were competent, but the Caeser I ordered was overdressed and humdrum, almost packaged. The entrees were terrible. The butternut squash ravioli was drenched in a salted-to-the-gills milky broth and although the ravioli appeared to be made from scratch, the otherwordly use of salt ruined the dish. The spaghetti squash was also obscenely oversalted - so much so that my dinner companion became ill after eating. Her dish at the restaurant was also completely ruined. Often, a chef who uses lots of salt on vegetarian dishes doesn't know how to cook them, other times the use of too much salt and cream displays a lack of culinary finesse. I had enjoyed coming here for years, but I would not go back to try it again unless someone else was picking up the tab, and even then, I would try to get recommendations ahead of time and stick to what's safe. The prices are not expensive, but the food isn't well prepared. The atmosphere can be loud. The dining can be comfortable, but this doesn't make up for poor cooking. I think that the Eastside Grill is a good place to go if you want to spend money and eat in a restaurant with a respectable mien, but the truth is that the people who come here today _and enjoy it_ simply have a little money to spend going out but can't tell the difference between what's good and what isn't. read more

Just ate here, everything was awesome! Kyle was our server and he was extremely attentive and brought us everything we needed! Their cocktails menu was creative and delicious! Our appetizers came out quickly and the alligator was really good considering alligators aren't exactly native to the area. The blackened fish of the day (happened to be catfish) had a really great kick to it and really hit the spot! My only complaint is the rest of my party wanted to head home so I wasn't able to stay for desert, but I will definitely be back!! read more

My wife and I were looking for something 'a little bit fancy' to experience our kid free evening. Sometimes we find stuff that's great, and sometimes we find Eastside Grill. The good:The menu was pretty extensive and had a lot of stuff with a New Orleans twist, which is always a plus in my book. The drinks were good, I got something with Makers and Sriracha, and the wife got a Mayan Mule (think Moscow Mule minus vodka plus tequila). The sangria was kind of so-so, I wouldn't get it again, but the pieces of fruit in it were plentiful. In lieu of dessert we got a couple of boozy coffees, which definitely were great. Overall, the place was pretty nice on the inside (decorated sort of like an old Southern colonial) and had it not been for the bad, I'd say our target of a 'little bit fancy' would have been a total success. Oh, and our waiter was pretty good too. The bad: Everything we ate was "eh". For an appetizer we got blackened alligator with some kind of deep fried cheese thing (the high point of the meal) with a side of "cajun sauce", which was really just thousand island dressing. We also got the fried cauliflower, which was exactly that: fried cauliflower. Usually you'd expect something a little bit more fancy than cauliflower tempura, but that's exactly what it was. Not even peppered. For dinner, my wife got a fried chicken with pine nut crust with sun dried tomatoes in some kind of cream sauce. She omitted the mushrooms, which they were more than happy to accommodate. I think the mushrooms could have had some added value, but the chicken tasted like absolutely nothing. I think they may have used the same breading from the cauliflower. They could make a killing in Plainville with this kind of stuff! Anyway, the real highlight was the Parmesan asparagus. All the cheese had melted together into some kind of puck in the middle. It was therefore impossible to enjoy your asparagus with parmesan cheese without cutting the puck. I think it was only like 3 pieces of asparagus too for 5 bucks, which makes it even more of an atrocity. For dinner I got some sesame shrimp with lobster pieces with asparagus and rice. I could write more about this, but it doesn't deserve more than me saying I would have rather got it at a Chinese restaurant. Something else worth mentioning: All the other reviews say fish is the way to go... but the guy in the booth behind us complained to the waiter about his blackened swordfish "definitely being something, but not blackened". The waiter was apologetic, and then came to ask us how our stuff was and when we said "good" he said, "are you sure?"... and we told him about the Parmesan puck. Poor guy man. I can't imagine trying to be a waiter somewhere where you pay 20 bucks a plate for mediocre when people expect better. That would suck, but he handled it well. In summary- at 25 bucks a plate, you could do better. A lot better. The menu items all seemed like they had a lot to offer, but there was just something missing... something to make it stand out from the realm of *gasp* chain restaurant food. If it were me reading this on a Friday night, I'd say go get a drink at the tunnel bar and make your reservations for somewhere else.... or you could stop here and have your drinks and then go elsewhere... or order some takeout and go blow a hundred bucks on liquor (maybe some 4-Loko??) and have a party for similar food quality and a lot more booze! I ordered the Sweet Pepper Glazed Faroe Island Salmon which was cooked to near perection on top of cauliflower and spinach. The menu said it came over rice, but surprisingly it came with a baked potato, which I didn't realize until later. We also ordered the Sesame Shrimp with Lobster and Sake. We got the date night special without the wine, so $50 for two soup/salads, entrées, and a dessert to share. My husband got the chicken pignoli which was delicious! The chicken was perfectly cooked on a bed of creamy and flavorful mashed potatoes. I had the butternut squash ravioli which was really good with a delicious sauce, but it was served on an overwhelmingly large bed of spinach which I was not a fan of. I like spinach, but I feel like the ratio of ravioli to spinach was off. We got the chocolate cake for dessert and it was so yummy. Our server was friendly and prompt.
