I've been eating at Eastern Style for at least 45 years. Being back in the old neighborhood, I had to stop by for an Eastern Style Steak Grinder. Delicious as it's always been. The owner, Frank, was still there- he's owned this location since the early 80s. I also used to frequent the Skokie location in the 70s and 80s. That store's long gone. The pizza still looks great, as well! The only thing that's changed here is the pricing . The "Value Meal" came in at $21.00 after tax. SOLID!! Food is delicious, 5 stars. Ambiance is 0. Basic, yet clean. But who cares when the sandwiches are so, so GREAT! Easily a two meal sandwich, I had the salami hoagie, and OMG. I like the food here, but that's about the only good thing I can say anymore. I'm done being a customer. Why is my order ready 40 minutes AFTER the pick-up time? I got there 10 minutes late, was told "5 more minutes," and then waited almost 30 more minutes for my gyro sandwiches. Not a single apology or even a "sorry for the wait." They just called out my order like I hadn't been sitting there forever. I watched a family of four get their food, eat, and leave in that time. This isn't the first time either. One time, they gave me a single gyro sandwich instead of the platter I ordered, which meant waiting another 45 minutes. I was trying to enjoy a game with friends, not waste my night waiting for food. I'm from the east coast and was super hopeful for this restaurant that boasted of serving east coast style, Greek pizza. Do not be fooled, it doesn't compare. The thin crust is kind of like cardboard. I asked for extra sauce - instead the pizza literally did not have any sauce on it. And it was the SALTIEST pizza I've ever had! I don't know what kind of cheese they're using, but I it's not straight mozzarella. I don't even know what cheese would be that salty...Maybe if there was sauce the pizza, the acidity of the tomatoes would have cut the salt. But there was no sauce! They advertise having grinders. But they define hot subs as grinders. On the east coast, any sandwich on a sub roll is a grinder. This should've been my clue that they really didn't offer actual east coast style food. And though Eastern is a trek for me these days, Uber Eats delivers. And though it's been 15 years since I first left a review for this place. It's still amazing. We always get at least 2 grinders. A Combination Grinder and a Philly Cheese Steak Grinder. Pro tip: We eat the Combination first because it gets soggy if you try and save some for leftovers. We save the Philly for the next day and warm it back up in the oven. Now let's just hope my wife didn't think this was like some kind of last meal for me, and these ribs heal quick. read more

I must admit that I laughed OUT LOUD at all the reviews for this place! The descriptions of the "old, cranky man behind the counter" are so funny. And so endearing. My husband has a good relationship with Frank, the cranky man in question, and his wife Sophia. Together they own and operate this business on Touhy. (And have for over 20 years?) Frank is a greek version of a Billy Crystal look-alike. He is all business, but that's why we love him. My husband and Frank banter back and forth about sports and he has never been brash with us. This couple is adorable and we ALWAYS have a great time at Eastern! It's a small, but welcoming place. But like it's already been said...the food is AWESOME. My husband can't live without getting a chicken grinder at least once a week. Everything is fresh, made to order. Their pasta is also great! Their delivery is fast and we have never had a mistake. It's not what it used to be. I frequented this place back in the early 2010s and haven't been back since 2017. I went back and had a horrible experience. We went in there and ordered 2 personal pizza (I could have swore they sold slices a few years ago) because they didn't have slices and a gyros. This pizza was some little Caesar's type stuff. I visit this place as frequently as I can when I work during the week. I LOVE the pizza by the slice. I buy it every chance I get. The sauce is so flavorful and amazing. This is hands down the best pizza I have ever had. I can't say no to a cheesy, saucy, perfectly greasy pizza! Even got the hubs hooked. Now he asks me to bring some home all the time. We discovered this place in the mid-1970s after figuring we'd never find a establishment that had the grinders we loved in Boston. As soon as we walked in for the first time, we knew this was the place. Family business had us traveling frequently from Lincoln Park to West Rogers Park in the early 1980s, so we stopped here often. Always grinders, never pizza because the grinders were so good. Hadn't been here in decades but stopped in today. The grinders are bigger than before and just as good. Highly recommended! Man do I love this place! I have never actually been to the restaurant itself as I opt for delivery but the food is always delicious. I've enjoyed pretty much everything I've had from here (didn't think the onion rings were that great), with my favorites being the cold sandwiches, the homemade mozzarella sticks and the gyros plate (this is a huge amount of food for a very reasonable price). Be sure to check out their daily specials and value meals-- I feel the prices are already reasonable but this will save you even more money. Another really great thing about Eastern Style Pizza is that they have fountain soda, which I much prefer to overpriced cans. There are a lot of cautionary stories about the rudeness of the owners but I have only interacted with one of them once. They were out of slices for the day and called to ask if I wanted to put something else on my order. I didn't think he was rude at all. All in all, I can't recommend this place enough. The food is great and they offer several varieties of the same thing. You can get a traditional gyros or hamburger or you could go big and get a grinder. This is the only place I know of in Chicago that serves great grinders. Always friendly service. They have fountain soda as well as bottled soda.
