Artisanal cheeses that can be delivered, oh my! My boyfriend surprised me one night for Hanukkah as he knew I loved the Sage Derby from a local cheese board shop here. Plus, a good standby snack is triple creme Brie spread on crackers - yum! Though the packaging wasn't great and resulted in a leak impacting the package, the product remained fairly intact and tasty regardless. So excited to try these as the Sage Darby is as delicious as I remember and this is by far my favorite triple creme Brie. I'd definitely order again, and hope the package fairs a little better. Likely during the holiday time when the influx of packages are causing a little rougher handling to get out before the holidays. Better yet, I'd love to experience the ambiance of the store front and will have on my radar the next time I'm in New York City. Cute artisanal shop. I got lured in by the sign advertising sandwiches. Overall, the sandwich for the price was kinda underwhelming. Kinda skimped on meat and cheese and not that flavorful. The bread was amazing though. I think they sell the French bread alone, so if I go back I'd go back just for the bread. Otherwise, various selections inside of cheese, meats and other specialty foods. I think I saw even beer selections. All kinda pricey, so it might not be an everyday stop but might be a good place to go for a special event or to buy a gift. read more

Like Bk Larder Eastern District is a cheese store plus gourmet shop. I was impressed by the pantry items they had, stocking my favorite Romesco sauce at the usual price. The cheeses are pricey, but the selection excellent. There's also Ahe wolf lowves which are top notch. It's a corner store once a hair salon so it's a lovely shop to browse & buy in when you're in the Slope. read more

Not your average sandwich shop! They had a menu of about 15 sandwich options, all looked fantastic. I opted for the smoked salmon, goat cheese capers and raw onions sandwich. The bread is my favorite part of any sandwich and here it was a nice french baguette. Perfectly crunchy outside and soft doughy inside. Yum. It was a good sandwich and only $9. Besides said sandwich, the store is super cute and unique. It seemed like all of the products were local or organic or just craft. I love Eastern District! I've been coming here since they opened, changed owners, etc., and the food and quality has been top notch ever since day 1. If you're looking for the best bread in Brooklyn, pick up their loaves and baguettes forged in the hot ovens of She Wolf bakery. Treat yourself even better and get on of their banging sandwiches. I haven't endured the bouts of unfriendliness that others complain about on this forum. I would point out that working long hours in a fishbowl must be tedious, and not many people jump to Yelp to declare that the service they received was simply adequate. One thing I can report on after many years of field research is beer cost. Expect to pay about 30% more from Eastern on any label that can be found elsewhere in Greenpoint. That, alone, is fine. What's irritating is that prices are NOT labeled for anything in the cooler nor most of what's on the shelves. Which means you'll be at checkout potentially with a line behind you trying to decide whether it's really worth $26 for a FOUR pack of 10 ounce cans of something you've never tried before. Bodegas with quick turnaround and loose bottles can be forgiven for this- I don't think it's a fair practice for an establishment like Eastern. Oh, and the fancy cheese and meat is expensive. So are waterfront condos. You don't want to show up for your park date at Transmitter with velveeta, so grin and bear it. read more

The Middle Aged women with curly hair was very unfriendly and unwelcoming. There was no greeting from her at all and definitely lack customer service. She made a customer feel like we are wasting her time and she has better place to be. The young sweet girl obviously wasn't as knowledgeable as her and had ask her for advice but her feedback was short and crisp with an attitude of "if you don't know cheese then don't eat cheese" gearing towards me (customer). I would definitely be back next time only if she's not there. I hope she is not the owner/manager. If she is I won't be back. She has ruined my adventure of finding a good cheese. read more

Very bad experience but typically really good sandwiches. Came in around 7:30 on a weeknight and they were out of bread, thus no sandwiches. They didn't seem to care and didn't apologize- just said "sandwiches are closed". Pretty disappointing since it's a bit out of the way for me, and more disappointing that they were unconcerned at my inconvenience. A simple "hey sorry you came out here and we don't have any food, how about a fifty cent coupon for next time?" would have been fine. 'll never come back but I leave a 4 star review because the food has been good two other times I've been- I don't have any ill will. 1 star experience on this particular day, but everyone has an off-day on occasion. I had the cheddar and chutney sandwich the other day on a recommendation from my sister. It was bread, chutney, cheddar, pickles, just like the description said. And only $7. I was skeptical about both the ingredients and the price. I was actually thinking of what else I could get in the neighborhood after I order it. Wrong, idiot! I'm not sure if they make their own bread or not, but the bread is epic and the combination of chutney, cheese, and pickles was perfect. Someone had clearly put some thought into that sandwich. Well done. One drawback for me was there is nowhere to sit inside the store. I guess they are going for more of a country deli experience than a cafe. I've been here a couple of times and they have officially surpassed the Bedford Cheese Shop in terms of selection, service, and enthusiasm. The cheese selection is purely American. (I can see you turning up your nose. Knock it off.) The thing is, every cheese here is DOPE. It's all amazing and just as good as foreign cheeses, but less known. So every time you come here you have the added excitement of trying something new! Their beer selection is excellent as well, and the staff was super helpful and recommended Session Black beer. Holy Moly was it amazing. And rather than disaffected, elitist hipsters, you'll find staff that are totally pumped to see you. For this alone, I'll never step foot into the Bedford Cheese Shop again. read more

Warning: this is not just a cheese shop. I made the mistake of assuming that for the last year. It's secretly the best sandwich shop in Greenpoint. Ok, we'll maybe I just didn't look up and notice the giant sign that says "sandwiches" behind the counter but to be fair I was distracted by the amazing selection of cheeses. This place is so chill and down to earth. The couple that run Eastern District are so incredibly nice and helpful and knowledgeable. I'd recommend letting them offer up suggestions and pairings; these guys know their shit. Their selection is outstanding: great beers on tap, great bottles, an amazing spread of cheeses, tons of terrific grocery items, and might I add, they carry BACON MARMALADE. Their sandwiches, although DELICIOUS, are slightly small for $9. They make up for it in many other ways. Eastern District was a major boon to the neighborhood when it opened in 2010 -- it filled a gourmet foodie treat niche that was hard to find north of Bedford Ave. One thing I like is that they've formed partnerships with lots of local growers and Brooklyn-based businesses, so it's a nice community anchor on Greenpoint's north end. The shop is a favorite of mine for a few different things. If you're looking for some top end meat and cheese for a picnic (though there aren't many spots to lay out a blanket in Greenpoint), dinner party, romantic evening, etc., they'll set you up. The staff is great with recommendations as you would expect. I'm not super educated or picky about cheese so I can usually find something I'll like at C Town's surprisingly decent cooler, but it's always fun going to Eastern District and trying something new. Eastern District is solid if you want to find a gift for a specialty food-lover in the $5 to $50 range. They have something for everyone -- think things like pickles and spreads in jars, various snacks with bacon in them, Japanese imports, cutting boards and cheese tools. The best part of Eastern District for me is their sandwiches. Their rotating menu features some creative combinations, and it's an affordable way to try the products they sell. I've never had a sandwich there I didn't like, even when I'm not sure about the ingredients (I had no idea I like country pork pâte, for example). Each sandwich features a few basic ingredients and doesn't get carried away, letting all the parts shine. One of Eastern District's main focuses is their beer selection, which is pretty extensive and has some rare imports and micro-brews. They offer some specialty brews in larger bottles, warm and chilled six packs, and several taps where you can fill and re-fill growlers. However, when I was a big beer drinker, I rarely bought anything there, mainly because there are countless bodegas up and down Manhattan Ave that have great selections for a few bucks cheaper. I can't say I have any gripes with Eastern District. I'd give it five stars, but I only go there once in a blue moon. Despite all the things going for it, I only find myself stopping in once in a blue moon -- I can't see a lot of reason to go aside from the occasional treat, gift or tasty sandwich. Still, the owners are friendly and helpful, and they do an excellent job of delivering on their specialties. If you haven't been, you absolutely should check out Eastern District to try something new. read more

I came in here because a co-worker recommended it to me. Once I walked in I immediately thought this place was my kind of spot. I saw the wide variety of craft beers and different types of specialty foods and my inner-hipster started getting excited. So I proceeded to get a smoked turkey sandwich with some special mustard or whatever. I paid $8 for the sandwich and walked back to work to find out upon arrival that the sandwich could hardly feed a small bird. Nothing like paying 8 bucks for three slices of turkey and some fancy mustard. I will not be buying my lunch here anymore. However, I may check out the different beers and possibly get a growler filled. ***** I'm updating this review. I can't really explain it but I now come in here at least once a week and buy those over priced sandwiches. The bacon jam has really got me hooked. Can't really explain why I now like this joint. I was tempted to four star this place, because of a couple of minor quibbles, but they really are minor. This shop is so much better than you'd expect for this block in this neighborhood that it's a minor miracle that it's set up here at all. This is a full service cheese shop. They have a nice carefully curated selection of cheeses, representing some heavy-hitter standard fancy-ass cheese shop cheeses, and a number of local varieties. You can find your clothbound Cabot cheddar, a number of very respectable blue cheeses, multiple ricottas including Brooklyn's own gold-standard ricotta Salvatore, and many things in between. The selection of cheeses is not as huge as Murray's, per se, but it's broad, and deep, and in my experience uniformly good. They also make a number of sandwiches: four vegetarian and four meat sandwiches, plus daily specials. These sandwiches have also been fantastic. And, finally, on the wall facing the cheeses, there is an assortment of cheese related products and other artisanal foods: local pickles, chocolates, crackers and such. There's also beer, but I drink mostly whiskey straight from the bottle, so I haven't sampled the beers yet. This is a fantastic store. Oh, right. My minor quibbles. Never once has an employee responded to my questions about a cheese with, "Would you like try try a bite?" I've had to buy the cheeses and take them home to get a taste (it's possible that they would offer me some if I asked, but I shouldn't have to). Luckily, these have all been great so far, but I think that if you're weighing two different kinds of blues, and asking about them, it might behoove the employee to help clear things up by letting you try them. That's just been my experience with other cheese shops, at least. Also, the prices are a little high. Yeah, cheese is expensive. I get that. But in some of the instances, there are no cheap options. There's no mid-range ricotta if you want to use it for cooking rather than as a centerpiece for your meal. You either get the $10 Salvatore (which, as I mentioned before, is awesome), or you go elsewhere to get some Polly-O. It's hard to say what I'd do differently; I just know that every time I've gone in there, I've spent over $50 for something I could carry with one hand. So be warned. You're paying for quality, but at least it is quality, and more or less worth it. read more

This place is such the best. After a rainy Sunday of looking at art and sludging through the streets in down jackets, soaked to the bone, Eastern District couldn't have been a better choice for dinner. Clean and with a wide selection, the husband and wife (??) who own the shop were quite lovely, even acknowledging my friend who had been there 3 times before, joking that he needs a frequent buyer card. The perfect North Brooklynites, they were warm but not without a hint of snarkeyness. But food, now that's the real highlight. There may only be two choices of sandwich (these choices change every day, however) but who needs more choices? Either you like turkey or ham or you don't REALLY want a sandwich to begin with. The prices are modest for what they're offering, but even better when you think of going there as being a delicacy. And it is. The food is really good. Their selections of chips and pickles and other canned pickle things go along perfectly with the theme, and there is a wonderfully casual European feel to the place. The owners appreciation for food, however, really sells the menu, not like it needs too much help as the tasty selection of cheeses and breads could probably sell themselves. 5 starts for Eastern District, and a wish they would open another shop in my neighborhood! read more

I really wanted to like this place. Pretty solid beer selection, good cheese and yummy snacks. But the growler beer prices are just a bit too high. The real reason I won't come back though, is I got the white fish sandwich over the winter and experienced horrible food poising that lasted well into the next day. Whenever walking past I want to drop by and grab a beer, but my bad experience is always holding me back. :/ read more
