y mom is hospitalized and in palliative care in Camrose. She is living her final days and made one final request... she wanted to go to East Side Mario's for her final meal eating out. It was also my sister's birthday (her daughter) so we explained she was in no shape to be taken out of the hospital, but that we'd 'bring East Side Marios to you'. We called the restaurant and explained the situation and asked what they would do to help make the meal in her room as authentic as possible and whether they could give us a menu so she can feel like she was there. The manager obliged, saying he'd certainly do that. They delivered everything for us including two menus(incl. drinks menu). We played beautiful Italian music and had a fantastic time, even though she could only take a few nibbles of it. Thank you, ESM's. You helped to make this a special day for my mom. Wow. Such good service tonight. I think they only had 1-2 staff on tonight (including the kitchen) but service was stellar. Drinks refilled, food fast, fresh, and good. It was a very quiet night. Only 1 large table aside from our party of 4. But was impressed. Been many times and service was good. Perhaps a solid 3-4 stars. But tonight pushed me to a 5. Wait staff were forgetful & seemed overall disinterested in their jobs. Sometimes friendly though. You could tell the manager was working his tail off. You saw him zoom past at least once every minute or two & picking up after the other wait staff. Had a panzarotti. It was okay-ish. It was sooooooo greasy. I get it's deep fried but it was just too greasy. Something like that would be better off baked (like pizza because that's kind of what it is). I guess I'll stick to pasta? it is so hard for me to figure out the right grade to give the east side mario's in camrose because to be honest it has been my favorite restraunt for a few years now and my heart aches to give it 5 star rating. Unfortunately my last experience with the place was so bad that i am unsure if i will ever go back again or not. one of the real joys of east side is they sell unlimited soup, salad and bread for a very decent price. this is probably the key to what makes the chain so popular. my wife and i would pay more for the offering if mario's felt they needed to charge more to be profitable. the bread is great bread... the italian wedding soup is good enough to create cravings for it... and the salad is a decent salad that is always fresh and edible. the service is normally quite good too... ive eaten at this location and others in the company at least 50 times and have very good experiences with the service at least 90% of the time. my last experience though was a complete disaster. my wife goes for the all you can eat salad. i like pizza. so my pizza came and it was below normal standards for marios. they normally make great pizza, so even a substandard one is still pretty tasty. i was ok with my side of the meal. my wife tried to get a second bowl of soup and was told that she could only have one bowl. we asked if the all you can eat option was discontinue and our server told us yes it was. we felt the price was outrageous for a single bowl of soup and finished our meal very unhappy since we had lost a great treasure to us. i was confused so when i waited to pay my bill i grabbed a menu. on the menu it said that the all you can eat option was still applicable. i asked the girl about it that i was paying.. she got agitated immediately and called over the manager. i explained to the manager we had been refused all you can eat. he didnt seem to apologize, but asked instead if we wanted another bowl of soup now? unfortunately by this time my wife had become very upset and insisted on leaving. the manager didnt try to offer us a coupon... or an apology... or say that he would talk to the waitress to correct her on her screw up. i got no sense at all from him that he felt he owed us anything at all. now this is my wife and my favorite chain. weve eaten at the edmonton and red deer locations often. used the chain anytime weve taken out the kids for family get togethers. taken my parents here. taken other friends here. we've eaten here at least every month once since it opened. im a very fat guy and easy to identify. i tip around 10-20% regular.we arent loud when we eat. im the type of customer a restruant should kill to get... and usually mario's seemed to appreciate my business over the years. one time they served us cold fries and immediately replaced them when we mentioned it. they apologized to us when they took their wonderful garlic mashed potatoe offering off the menu and said it was just a company decesion. they almost always offer to grate fresh parmesian cheese onto my pizzas and i just love that. the price is always very fair imo and for my wife and i, the cost never goes over 30 dollars for a dinner even with my tips. so i am sad i can only give the place 2 stars, but i can not for the life of me understand why they gave us such a crappy experience last time. i have to wonder if it was personal somehow? maybe because i am fat? I don't know but they screwed up the signature offering right to our faces then 2 of them had a chance to apologize for it and neither did. In a way, I wish I had compained alot louder at the time and gotten a reason for this screw up. Instead, I get to come here and share it with all of you because it just wasn't right at all. I hope if anyone from Mario's sees this, they will understand this was unacceptable behavior and they lost a customer they used to make alot of profit off of. it's too late to get my business back {at least until i forget about this experince anyhow} but maybe you can learn from my anger here and not pull crap like this on anyone else. Three friends and I stopped here on a holiday long weekend for lunch. The food was pretty decent, although the server got our order wrong, even after one of my friends pointed it out on the menu for him. Our empty dishes were left on the table for about 10 minutes, as different servers walked by empty handed. One was even washing windows and glanced over a couple times. I guess washing windows is more important than clearing a table. The last straw that really made this lunch suck was the two bartenders in the lounge. Our table was out of sight but still within earshot. Throughout the whole meal we could hear them complaining to each other about having to work the holiday. In town visiting family and like usual, we came here Friday. Service was pretty terrible. We ate our appetizer and salad before we got drinks. When the drinks did come they were wrong. Our server just seemed frazzled and no one helped her. Food was mediocre, my chicken parm had literally no mozzarella on it. I also dislike that they made their lounge kid friendly. This location was clean, but the food was quite mediocre. Everything we had seemed like it had been heated in a microwave, and very bland. My wife had the Fettuccini Alfredo and I had the spaghetti and meatballs. The sauce tasted like it was right out of a jar. The fries that came with the children's menu were very disappointing. I used to love this place but the last time i went there, it was around noon so most people would expext a restaurant to be prepared for lunch but their famous garlic bread was half frozen and we had to wait waaaay longer than usual to get it, then part of our order was wrong and what they did get right the portions were very small, i expected more considering how much we were paying, the salad was way bigger than the main meal. Yikes. You are better off going to KFC down the road. We pulled into here on our way out of Camrose. The menu is pretty bleak. Waitress got both of our orders wrong. I asked for it to be remade due to allergies but my husband kept his. Food was slow and the place was dead. My order came after everyone was finished eating and I had to box it up. We then paid full price for our meal. Next day and we both have food poisoning. So that's grand. Also, I found it quite dirty. So that's $50 we wasted and will never see again. I come here a lot. Like quite a bit. I'd say I would average at least twice a month. There are not a lot of this style of restaurant in Camrose so East Side Mario's is often a place I end up going. It's hard for me to write a review because I have had delicious food and great service most of the time. And then, there are times when I wonder if I'll be back ever again. (although deep down I know I will be back) I would recommend this place. One highlight is the unlimited bread and soup/salad with most of the entrées. I used to always get the fresh garden salad but approximately a year ago they changed the recipe and it is not as satisfactory in my opinion. I always go with the Caesar Salad and make sure I get lots of the freshly grated Parmesan cheese on top. It is soft and melts in your mouth. The Firecracker Shrimp Bowtie (with penne noodles instead) and the Chicken Parmigiana would probably be my top two choices, although there is so much more deliciousness to try. We often eat at this resturant only because it's the one of very few in town. The food is average but the last few times, our servers have been unbelievably bad. My husband actually got up and cleared our dishes and brought them to the kitchen himself because we had no room for desert. It took our server close to half an hour to bring us just the start salads and then he blamed it on the kitchen as if we hadn't worked in the industry. The server also forgot to bring a salad refill and didn't put our orders into the computer until late. We frequently have poor service here and the popularity of the resturant is starting to decline for the same reason. The food is not good enough to sit and wait two hours for it. read more
