Great store with a strong selection of bikes, supplies, and merch but service left much to be desired. We spent the past 10 days on a bike tour biking over 600 miles to Virginia Beach and were excited to come in to support local bike shops and buy a jersey to commemorate the ride but when we told the staff member working there about our trip they didn't really say much and then just went to the back to eat their lunch and watch TV as we walked around the store. Their Instagram made it seem like a much more fun and friendly shop, so maybe we caught them on a bad day. Disappointing. read more

My son broke the chain on his relatively expensive bike, and we needed to get it fixed asap. This is his third bike in the last 3 years, so I didn't want to buy another one or spend alot on repairs. I googled this location, and we went their right away to drop it off. This location is near the Edinburgh area of Chesapeake, but it feels like a small town store. I believe it used to be an old post office back in the day. It was only a short 15-minute drive from our home, so that is always a plus. The staff was nice, friendly and helpful to us. They gave us a quote, and we came back a few days later to pick it up. It was easy, peasy! If I need a bike repaired anytime I will be coming back to this location. The staff is nice and they made the experience very pleasant despite the circumstances. Well done! read more

I can't say enough about how helpful and friendly these folks were. I caught a flat 25 miles into a ride, Googled the nearest bike shop, found them just over a mile away. Made a call and they told me to come in and they'd fix me up. A short walk, and 30 minutes later I was back on the road. Small Colley ave store in Ghent lends to an intimate, hometown feel. Brought my sons on a hunt for mountain bike repair parts. Space was full of preassembled middle to high end bikes, a few trikes, and a couple motorized models; walls and middle islands stocked full of bike safety items and accessories. Water bottles/holders, helmets, seats, child add on seats, reflectors, contemporary bells, etc. My visit was reminiscent of trips to Colley Ave Bike Shop, where I bought my first fanny pack (Vision). Both EC employees we met, introduced as "Steven" "Tyler" - were friendly and knowledgable. After I made a gratuitous Aerosmith joke, they taught us what a lawyer nut was and how it got it's name. They also gave me the correct fork nuts for our project bike just before we learned Steven was a longtime Colley Ave employee before it closed. That's "nuts" right? If it wasn't implied by Ghent/Colley, limited parking on-street. read more

Stopped in here searching for a hybrid bike for me to ride around the neighborhood with my boyfriend and his daughter and some light trail riding. Very limited selection right now bc cycling is hot with COVID. Staff were masked and they had a ton of bikes in for repair with loads of accessories. Staff were busy but friendly and I was greeted by a nice worker who showed me some incoming inventory that they had and colors, he was very nice and explained the bikes to me and prices since I'm by no means an expert. Great location with street parking right in front and in the cute and bustling area of Colley where you can spend an afternoon roaming around eating, shopping, and people watching. I love this area of town and this shop is right in the center of things. On the same side of the street and strip as Town Center Cold Pressed NRFK. Will def. stop in again. A great experience. I didn't find a bike that day, but I was helped quickly and saw tons of goodies inside and the bikes on order incoming soon were very nice. read more

i called a day before going in telling them what was wrong with my work bike somebody on the phone said "alright come in whenever & we can help you" i came in the following day with the bike (drove 2.1 miles on a broken bike) just for them to make up an excuse not to help me & say it would cost more then the actual bike after i told them it's fine im still okay with paying for it the man took down my information for a half deposit then proceeded to take it to the back with some other fella. a few minutes later the other man came in & said they couldn't do anything for me i was genuinely confused because why is one worker about to help me & the other worker refused to i'm not sure if it's cause it's the start of black history month but i am extremely disappointed in the actions that were taken today. read more

Had written an extensive review of this place but the owners must've cried about it and asked Yelp to take it down. Here's the gist of it. Bike repair was good. A little pricey. But customer service was TRASH. Steer clear of the rude kid Taylor. Completely disrespectful. UPDATE: As you can see below, the owner Mike replied and I appreciate that. Glad the issue was addressed with the employee. And like I said, outside of that incident this place is good, the repair was good and that's what counts. After the original work they did to my son's bike I had to tighten his tire and went to readjust the brake line they replaced which they over tightened and we could not loosen it. My wife called and explained and they agreed it sounded like they needed to fix their work. When we got there they claimed it was work after the fact and tried to charge us money to fix the brake line they just replaced. Unreal. So an hour later they were able to break it free and gave us some extra cable which was nice... but it would have been nice had they not charged us an arm and a leg and wasted our time to come in and replace the wire they just redid. Take your bike to REI. They'll get it done the first time. read more

This is to update my prior negative review of this company, which, if Yelp allowed it, I'd remove at this point. The owners and managers addressed the shortcomings of the prior experience that I previously reviewed. They went out of their way to correct the situation and I was so pleased, I decided to buy a new road bike from them. They took my old bike in trade and gave me a great, very fair deal on the new bike and even included a custom fitting. All's well that ends well and the service in fixing this issue has been superb! On our trip from Louisville to Norfolk, my bike came loose from the rack (thankfully did not completely fall off), but the back of my bike was bouncing of the highway. Yeah, me! Needless to say, it needed a new tire and possible other work. I looked up East Coast Bicycles and saw the great reviews so we dropped my bike there. Best bicycle shop in Hampton Roads, period!!! I very rarely write reviews but I felt the need to. I was in the market for an expensive mountain bike so natural I shopped around. Many shops in the area treated me like I was there waisting thier time not realizing I was about to spend almost $3k on a bike. I finally went to East Coast Bicycle in Norfolk and I was instantly greeted by a friendly knowledgeable staff. They're a small shop but I was amazed that everything I was looking for and more was in stock. I told them the bike I was looking for and they gave me a fantastic deal on it. They had that bike in stock but it was a size just slightly too big for me. So instead of pushing a bike they had in stock, they were honest and convinced me that I would be much happier if they ordered the correct size. They ordered the bike for me right away and amazingly they called me the very next day saying that my bike has arrived and that it was in the process of being put together. When I arrived to pick it up they took my measurements and weight to make sure the shocks and everything was set up specifically for me and my riding style. East Coast Bicycle has definitely earned my business and I'm happy to see that there're still small businesses out there that are dedicated to customer satisfaction and not just the bottom line. Great bike shop in Ghent, super customer service, really busy but friendly place. Some bike shops have serious attitude and look down their noses at people that aren't totally into racing or what have you, but I did not get that feeling here. I had called ahead and had expected to drop off my bike for a brake adjustment and get it back after a day or two. The mechanic on duty took a spare minute of his to adjust my brake right away and get me on my way (AWESOME). He also took a minute to show me how to properly oil/clean my chain. The mechanic informed me of a nice group bike ride available (with the proper gear) which was really nice. Even though I know these guys have their preferences for bike's and gear etc. they were unpretentious and professional which can be (sadly) hard to find. read more

Came here to replace both tires and tubes for my Trek. Everyone i spoke to was very friendly and eager to help. They made sure that they knew exactly what I wanted, printed a work ticket and told me they would be ready the next day. 2 hours later I get a phone call saying they actually had my tires in stock and that they were ready for pickup! They could have held off a day on replacing them because thats what I expected but they got them done very quickly! Prices did seem slightly high but its worth it to support a local business that truly their customers! read more

I have spent a couple of days calling bikes shops checking stock and asking questions. I'm am looking to upgrade my bike and my daughter's bike. I have yet to purchase bikes but will say Jared has been the only person to field all my questions and offer a lot of input, good advice and recommendations without having to set foot in the store. I spoke with East Coast prior to our trip and they were more than willing to put the bike back together so that we could join a tour of the Outer Banks in NC. Ordered my first bike from them a little over a year ago and have been loving it since. I only come to this shop now even though I live 45 minutes away. This shop is great at getting exactly what's good for you. For the people looking to get a cheap bike, they have a few options but this shop will show you why spending a couple hundred dollars more is worth it. I've sent at least 4 friends here and they have all been taken care of and have no complaints. The shop has free lifetime minor adjustments which are ideal for people who aren't super bike savvy or have tools. The people who work and run the shop actually want to help you and are very knowledgeable. The work they do when they service bikes is very fair. You know what it's like trying to get a toy away from a child? That's how I feel about my money. I don't give it away easily and when I do I expect a lot. This place delivers and my money's spent there happily. Over the past 10 years I've bought a few bikes from them, many accessories, and had my bikes serviced there as well. More importantly, I've referred my friends to this shop several times, and they're still friends! But, and this is the big one.....I've put my marriage on the line for this shop! That's right, I've now bought three bikes for my wife there. Each time she's been pleased and I've looked like a hero. This shop is what your "Local Bike Shop" should be. It isn't a big impersonal warehouse or discount store. It's staffed by people who like biking but more importantly REALLY like making sure that people get the right bike. In fact, I've seen a couple instances when they persuaded people to NOT buy a bike because physically they were still on the mend and needed to come back when it was safer to ride. So yeah, they care about the long-term instead of the quick buck. I ride a Tri bike, my wife a cruiser, and when they were small I even bought my sons their first bikes there. In each instance this shop has stood behind their products and when a bike needs some tweaking after purchase they did so with a smile. Speaking of service, Chief Bike Service Guru Steve is an unsung hero for me. Right before a race I had a part snap (my fault, serves me right for trying to do a complicated repair myself). I took the bike in and realizing my time crunch before a flight Steve was able to fix it and get me on my way. Bike techs are the unsung hero of any good shop and this guy deserves the reputation he has for his skills. This is what a bike shop should be and I hope it's supported for years to come. In an age when everything can be bought online it is so worth taking a minute to speak face-to-face to the staff there and give them the chance to best fit your needs. It's a 30 minute drive from my house and I'm always happy when I take the time. Oh, I should also say that they do get busy sometimes. I look at it this way, have you ever walked into a restaurant and realized you're the only one there? Not a good sign for me so I do a 180 and get out of there. If this shop's busy it's for a good reason and always worth my wait. Now I just need a few extra bucks for that electric bike I saw there last time.... read more

One of the closest bike shops to where I live. Got a tune up on a bicycle I planned to start using to commute to work. The tune up was over $100 and had to have been gun decked (didn't do it but said they did and charged me accordingly). Had three failures within 90 days that should have been prevented by a good servicing. Called the shop just to see what they'd do. The young woman I spoke with was oh so apologetic but there was no "Would you like to bring it back in so we can take a look at it and figure out what went wrong". Nor did I pressure her for any such action, simply took note of the business philosophy and decided to find another shop. I now drive 16 miles to Virginia Beach for my bike shop needs. read more
