    Steak and Sushi
    Kasey N.

Earls in Vancouver is one of those places that has a lot of different options from chicken sandwiches to steak. I popped in recently with some friends, and the menu had a nice mix of something for everyone. I ordered the Steak and Sushi menu item, their sushi is fresh and tasty, especially the aburi salmon sushi press. I had their tataki style Prime Sirloin and it was cooked just right juicy and flavorful with a great sear. It's a solid option if you want a little surf and turf vibe going on. The atmosphere is upbeat and casual, perfect for a relaxed dinner or catching up over drinks. The cocktails are fun, too they've got some creative mixes and classic options. The happy hour options here are great for both drinks and food. Service was friendly and attentive, though it can be busy on the weekends. Definitely worth booking a table if you don't want to wait.

Just a brief stop during happy hour. Enjoyed their clam chowder tuna taco which was served in an unusual she'll made from rice. Good job. Service was great. Parking always a big plus here with their own lot.

This was my third time at this location. The tuna poke bowl was downright delicious! No complaints as all the ingredients complement each other spectacularly. I'm especially impressed by how well the mango pairs with the Ahi tuna. The pizza was pretty solid but was a bit too salty because of the Prosciutto. May just be personal preference and I would get the margarita pizza instead. Crust is crunchy and soft, perfect for my taste. In general, the price wasn't exorbitant but not cheap either. However, taking a closer look it seems like some mains and desserts are a bit too pricey for what they are. Our waitress was attentive and regularly checked on us to ask us how we thought of the food and for water refills. One thing to note: the food took a bit longer than I liked (20+ mins) but I've encountered worse. Although our experience was actually pretty decent, my past experiences at this location and others have definitely fluctuated with this being one of the better ones. We had lunch at Earls yesterday. For background, my family has regularly been coming to this location since the late 1990s when we were initially impressed by their amazing service and good food at decent prices. Over time, the food has for the most part stayed good but the service has definitely been declining. Sadly, yesterday's lunch is the last meal we plan to eat there. When we arrived, it was Friday lunchtime. The restaurant was quite full, but we didn't have to wait for a table. We were seated and given menus and then we waited. And waited. The young woman who we eventually learned was our server, spent a lot of time rushing back and forth past our table to give other tables their bills or talk to them. She also seemed to spend a lot of time staring at her tablet with other servers. At one point she said hello as she rushed past but didn't actually stop. I saw her speak to a colleague who came over to give us water and he said she was helping another table but that she'd be right over. After more waiting, she finally came over. She gave us a sort of apology and made some excuse about a "new system" the restaurant was using, then she took our food and drink orders. We resumed waiting. My seat was in view of the bar. After a reasonable amount of time, I saw our drinks waiting to be brought to us. Although our server was often near the bar, the drinks sat a good 10 minutes before someone else brought them to us. About 25 minutes after we ordered, we were able to flag her down to ask when our food was coming. Without actually apologising for the wait, she said she'd check on it. She arrived a couple of minutes later with the food, again with no apology about the delay. My mother was happy with her chicken wings. They looked good and she said they were hot and delicious. My husband had the Sesame Citrus Noodle Bowl with crispy tofu. His food was also good and the tofu was indeed crispy and hot. I had the Grilled Chicken Caesar with garlic chicken. It tasted good but the chicken was barely warm making me think it was sitting while the other dishes were finished. As well, the bread on the side was so hard it was difficult to bite into, so I gave up on that. At no point while we ate did our server check to see how our meal was or if there was anything else we would like. When we could, we stopped her to ask for our bill as that seemed to be the only thing she did for anyone in a timely manner. The bill did come reasonably quickly and as we were paying, she gave us an overly effusive apology again blaming the "new system" and promising that she would do better next time. Unfortunately, I doubt we will be back to find out, which is very sad, considering the long history my family has had at this Earls location.

One line review: It was all right. Dining in a restaurant dining room during the omicron spike of the pandemic was not an option for me. I am immuno-compromised because of medicines which suppress my immune system. So we thought we'd try delivery (not our usual way). We ordered the Buy one-Get one Burger Bundle via DoorDash. It /sounded/ like a good deal -- buy a burger, fries, and a drink and get one of each free. I figured a total cost in the $20-30 range. Reality was less awesome. After we added avocado, cheese, and bacon to each burger, the total (including delivery and tip) was $45. That's not awful for a burger, fries, and a drink for two in Vancouver, but it's hardly a deal. I can't imagine paying the full price for this and feeling glad about it. The burger itself was decent but not remarkable in any way beyond the bacon, which was thick and flavourful. The fries are cut thinner and were (understandably) cold by the time they reached us, but we popped them into an air fryer and they reheated and recrisped nicely. But being cut thin, they also cooled off amazingly quickly, so that was a wash. The food was packaged neatly, in sturdy, compostable containers. Bottom line: Didn't hate it, but this was overpriced and we would not do it again.

Perfect location to go happy hour on a patio on a sunny day! The hostess and server (Sophia) were so friendly and attentive. The patio had a lot of seats, even if you didn't want to be in the sun but near there you can so with their open dining doors. I really liked the sushi tacos and queen bee pizza! The hot honey was a very nice touch. The roast beef was alright, just a little dry. Overall definitely coming back here for the summer!

Didn't taste very fresh and the orange vinaigrette sauce didn't do anything to help it. The jasmine rice balls were an interesting touch. Wouldn't recommend Shishitos and cauliflower ($14) - the cauliflower florets were nice but the shishitos were lacking that snap you get (it was a bit soggy). Wouldn't recommend Steamed Bao bun with butter prawn masala ($21) - this was one of the highlights of the night. The butter masala went so well with the Bao bun and it soaked up that sauce perfectly. Loved the snap from the shrimp but wish there was more of it dispersed throughout the dish. Definitely get this dish Crab satay ($19) - this dish was weird... The crab was misled by the flavour of the peanut sauce and it just didn't work well together as a dish. Each component was fine on its own but nothing worked together. The cabbage salad felt like just an afterthough. Would not recommend. Sweet and sour pork belly ($16) - this dish was also interesting - it felt more like just a crispy pork belly. That's it. The sweet and sour sauce felt non- existent. There needed to be another punch in this dish to make it more complete. Wouldn't recommend Sea bass ($37) - this dish was great. Loved the texture of the sea bass. The potato gnocchi was a nice touch and that Goan curry sauce went really well with everything. Wouldn't order again Beef Kad Pra kao ($29) - this was another miss. The beef wasnt chewy but it lacked flavour. It needed more basil in it to bring out the flavour. Nothing about this dish impressed. Wouldn't order again Dubai chocolate bar ($17) - absolutely delicious. Loved the crispness of the chocolate crumb offset by the softness of the dense pistachio creme and the chocolate ganache. The little bits of the rose petals gave it that essence that it needed. It wasn't overly sweet. Would get this again Overall quite a few missed and some great dishes. The serving sizes are appropriate for the price. The service was great and not overbearing. Definitely try the steamed bun, the sea bass and the Dubai chocolate bar. My biggest issue with the dishes were that the garnished were almost the same for every dish. I understand it's for the pop of colour but it was so repetitive and didn't add any value to the fish other than the pop of colour (the green shoots and the red radish). I had the spiced Guatemalan carajillo it was pretty smooth and not too sweet. I would want to try their other drinks as they have quite an extensive menu.

That said service is slow, with details that should be spot on, not even evident. Water glasses left empty forever, promises made, not even brought up again. When the reservation was made a question was asked of an event for the dinner out. A 60th birthday was mentioned, acknowledged, and when sat by our server and nothing further. To be fair K would rather it all go by unannounced, but when it's all over the paperwork a small recognition should be there. The space itself, is not on a rooftop at all, but it's a beautiful high ceilings restaurant that deserves a far better kitchen. Our price fixe menu for two at $155 or so was definitely not worth the price at all. The steak was uniformly medium when med rare was the ask. There was a tiny bit of medium rare at one end, but the vast majority was medium or more. The torch of the butter on the steak, looked good from afar prior to our serving, but right in front of you looks almost comical.
