This is one of the hidden gems in Kitsilano that is 1000% worth trying. The food and the kitchen are incredible, and a huge shout out to Wes who has made this place a welcoming environment. The vibe is old-school speakeasy, something you can't get from the chain restaurants in the area. This place is pretty good. I like how they do their Caesars, and I also like that they grind their burger meat in-house, so you can ask for it cooked different than well-done. Their "brunch burger" is a major missed opportunity though... this really should have a fried egg on it. You could possibly add an egg from the ala carte section of the menu, but those cost $3, so you'd be looking at $27 for a burger and a half a cup of fried potatoes. That's insanely expensive. Currently the brunch burger has two small patties which have a tendency to overcook and become dry. My patties were well-done despite me asking for medium - don't even ask if the kitchen can't deliver. Not sure what makes that a brunch burger, but it would be much better if those two patties were combined into one, and a fried egg was added, while staying below a $24 price point expensive burgers in Vancouver. Other restaurants can do it.... Oh, the other disappointing thing is that the card reader defaults to tips at 18, 25, and 28%. Worst sandwich I've ever had. I've never stopped eating food before once I've started,.. until I ate here. I do honestly believe someone messed up a recipe. Great place in the hood. They have a decent bourbon selection as well. At happy hour, they have well priced wine pours and yummy snacks, such as a cheese board and potato croquettes. In the evening they have standard pub fare. I've had their veggie burger many times, usually to go to the beach. They have great fries. It's not fast food, but it does come quickly. The servers will adapt for you for veggie diets. It's one of the nicer little pubs in the area, with an awesome terrace in the summer. I'm happy this is here! read more

I'm reviewing the food, as I'm not a drinker. My friends who are enjoyed the selection of beers. I had the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich with a side salad. The salad was better than expected -- quality ingredients (arugula, goat cheese, dried cranberries, and pumpkin seeds) and in a reasonable portion. Worth taking over the fries (and I don't say something like that very often). The sandwich was only okay. It was well-executed, but I would have appreciated a slightly larger piece of chicken (it seemed a little small to me for $16). Also, it was NOT spicy to my pallet, which was mildly (pun intended) disappointing. The vibe inside the restaurant was chill, and our server was wonderfully attentive. We parked for free on the street several blocks away. I'd probably give 3.5 stars if that were an option; 4 for food quality, venue, and service, 3 for not quite enough meat on the sandwich (a big deal to me). Bottom line: I'd go back here with friends who want a good selection of beers; it's certainly pleasant. I tried the bison burger and my partner had a chicken burger. They both came with kennebec fries, which were not my favourite as they were thick cut. Nonetheless, they were fresh. The bison burger was alright. The wild boar bacon made it seem appealing, but they should have probably cut out the processed jalapeno cheese sauce as it wasn't appetizing. Had a wonderful brunch at The Ellis. We came at 11:30am on Saturday and it was pretty quiet, had the choice of our seats. We ordered the bacon eggs benny and I asked for avocado toast on gluten free bread with eggs over medium. My husband also ordered the beignets for dessert afterwards. My husband is very picky with his eggs benny and he said this was one of the best! The eggs were poached perfectly, the bacon is organic and thick and the crispy potatoes were perfectly cooked. My avocado toast was good, nothing extra special I can comment on, but I was very grateful that they had gluten free bread for me. My hubby liked the beignets, nice and fluffy and warm. The drip coffee was nice and strong and our waitress was always around topping it up along with our waters. I would definitely come down here for brunch again! Tried out The Ellis during Dine Out Vancouver and really enjoyed every dish that was served. They have a good balance of flavours. My favourite was the grilled octopus as it was surprisingly tender and flavourful and fresh. Their pavlova is also surprisingly good. It was really soft and yet crunchy. This is a cool spot, especially if you want to eat outdoors. The food is okay, the drinks are good and the service is good. The charcuterie is good and the chicken Buffalo sandwich is good. I would not suggest the hot wings, they are just okay. The gnocchi (which was the special) was not good either. A bit hidden away in Kitsilano, we visited The Ellis for brunch on a weekend. First the positives: The service was prompt and friendly, and the decor was very nice. Love the blue & copper color scheme. Their fries and salad were really tasty. Fries were well seasoned, and the salad packed some nice flavors. Now onto the.. hit and miss part. The Chorizo Hash was supposed to come with soft boiled eggs that would be runny. When we opened them up, the eggs were quite well done. The Chorizos themselves were tasty though. We also tried the Ellis Burger, and the patty itself was really bland. Reading some other reviews, it was brought up before. Hopefully they will make some adjustments there. Our burger also came with a an unmelted slice of cheese, which was a bit odd. In the end, it's a really nice spot in Kits. With brunch being so popular in Vancouver, it's nice to be able to find a place on the west side that didn't require a lineup. Their food was just a bit inconsistent, but maybe it was an off day for the kitchen. We will have to give it another shot in the future to see if that's the case. read more

The start of our Vancouver trip was kicked off at this little Kitsilano spot for Saturday brunch. I have to say this quiet little spot almost feels like a hidden secret as the places on Cornwall and 4th Ave are packed. Here, you're close to the beach with easier parking and no wait. When we arrived on a Saturday noon, their patio was maybe only half filled and the bar was filling up to watch the World Cup on their big screens. The spot is definitely on the industrial rustic trend with it's use of big planks of wood, exposed unpolished raw metal details, and the usual Einstein bulbs. It is a pretty big spot and the tables are nicely spread out. Even if all the tables were taken, there is zero concerns about hitting another table or overhearing their conversation. There was maybe only 4 other tables with us that day and service was friendly and solid. We didnt experience any of the poor service mentioned in other reviews but we also didnt do a dinner. Their menu is their take on comfort food but with a focus on being locally sourced. So no fake syrups (its real maple syrup) and their eggs are supposed to be free run. It takes all the classic brunch dishes but just does a bit of a twist on it... French Toast gets crusted in Frosted Flake for a sweet crunch addition and then topped with hot crispy chicken. Who needs Chicken and Waffles when you can take it further it Frosted Flake French Toast. Greens n Grains - A nice light salad that was filled a lot of great vegetables and tons of goat cheese to add a tangy note and a creamy bite. The addition of the grains kept me decently full before heading over to a nearby spot to grab a doughnut. For all those wanting to keep it light or looking more of a vegetarian offering, this would be a great dish. Nicely dressed with a sesame vinaigrette and offering pops of flavour from the goat cheese, fresh peas, and candied pecans... this is a solid salad. 4/5 Fried Chicken on Frosted Flake French Toast - Going to admit that this is just over the top... food coma ready? The fried chicken was a healthy helping that was hot and crispy. A solid fried chicken as it wasn't dried out and seasoned well. You can dip it in the chicken gravy for an extra burst of salt and chicken flavour or go all out and drown it in the maple syrup. As for the french toast, you get 4 good sized pieces that had that extra sweet crunch of the cereal. The custard did soak the bread nicely. I think you didnt really need to add the maple syrup for extra flavour but who can say no to maple syrup. Not this Canadian. 4/5 Solid low key spot with good dishes and easy going staff to give you a nice start to the weekend of good eating. The exploration of our new neighbourhood continues! We came here for their late night happy hour at 9pm however they've since revised it start at 10pm. That was a bummer but we decided to stay anyway. I tried the negroni and old fashioned cocktails, both were quite good! We ordered the spinach and artichoke dip to share - very cheesy and delicious. Our server brought us extra bread - I thought it was complimentary but they charged us $2. We also ordered the deep fried pickles, unfortunately the batter was incredibly hard and inedible. We let our server know about the issue and he did his best to fix the situation by asking the kitchen to remake it. The second time around was a bit better but ultimately I think it was an issue with their batter recipe. Bonus points for the free shuffle board near the entrance to play! Be prepared to spend a little more than their neighbours, but you get what you pay for. You can eat a $8 breakfast at The Kings Head and spend the rest of your day regretting your life's choices, or you can have The Ellis Breakfast - $16 and be so much happier with life. Do your self a favour, stay away from The Kings Head (it's not worth your time or money) and support a local family that cares about their guests. I'm surprised by all the rave reviews on here. My experience was quite the opposite. It was not busy at all when we were there, but it took almost an hour for four of us to get burgers. I ordered the "Bone In Rib Burger", that evidently is not bone in at all.... just pulled rib meat on top of the burger. ($26 burger plus tax and tip) My somewhat raw burger smelled and tasted nasty like the meat was going off... not sure if it was the burger or the rib meat on top... But I was so hungry by then, and we were already so late for a show we had to get to, I ate half of it anyway. I didn't have time to wait another hour for something else. I did NOT feel good after eating it! They also billed us for an extra can of non-alc beer (at 8 bucks each!), that we didn't notice until after we paid. No one at the restaurant could figure out how to refund it. Which made us even later. Bottom line, our allocated hour and half was not long enough to go for a hamburger, and I had perhaps the worst hamburger ever. A very frustrating and disappointing experience. Very good. We say outside enjoying the cherry blossoms (and kept reasonable warm with an outdoor heater). Ordered the beef dip with chicken gravy poutine, the crunch salad and the salt and peper chicken wings. Beef dip bread was especially good, but overall a good sandwich. The chicken gravy poutine was delicious with plenty of cheese curds. The crunch salad was special with the jicama! Chicken wings were done great, not too salty or greasy. Price is reasonable with a range depending on how much you feel like spending (~15-25). Happy hour until 5pm also seems like a good deal! Update: Don't go for the artichoke dip. Incredibly salty. My first visit here I thought the menu was a bit out there for Kits. This was my third visit and I got to meet the owner this time. Kevin if I remember correctly. Kevin was friendly and polite and seemed genuinely excited and proud of the changes they have made and The Ellis. The inside remains the same, beautiful and modern! Nice lighting. Music isn't blaring so conversations are possible. It was on the quieter side when we visited which was perfect for us after attempting Local in October. People summers over go back to your own neighborhoods so I can have my Local back lol. Anyhow, I still believe this venue will be very noisy, like Local, when it's full. Opened ceilings and wood floors don't allow for sound absorption. Super stoked to say there are happy hours, with food! Go Ellis! This is smart business I commend you. Lovely wine, red and white for $5. This is a nicer wine that what you will get at Brown's or Local. My opinion of course but I am a total wino, straight up! The red is Chamberton red blend. Steamworks Kolch is also on for $4. Check my pics for the happy food. My only suggestion would be to add something healthy to the happy like a veggie and hummus plate or salad rolls. Alongside many of the restaurants in the West End and within a walking distance from Kitsilano beach sits one of the newer gastropubs, The Ellis. What lead us to The Ellis was Vanfoodster's Burger Challenge and we figured why not go for a whole meal? This was a big deal for me because if it was not for the burger challenge, I most likely would not have given this restaurant a try since I am neither the type to head to a bar or gastropub for snacks or a meal.When we walked in, I was impressed by the interior and atmosphere. The restaurant looked chic, bougie and literally what you would find if you Googled gastropub. TOGARASHI SPICED WINGS ($12.00). We started off with a bowl of perfectly fried wings. Crispy, juicy, and the skin was well rendered. The wings were on the lighter tasting side however and could have used some more togarashi and flavour in my opinion, but nevertheless still perfectly fried. VEGETABLES ($7.00). Next up was an amazing bowl of vegetables. Seasoned with roasted garlic chilli and lemon, the caramelized broccoli and cauliflower exhibited a nice crunch and the Brussels sprouts were cooked perfectly. There was so much flavour in this bowl! GRILLED OCTOPUS ($13.00). Continuing with the theme of perfect vegetables, these were nicely charred as well and tasted great. As for the octopus, it was a touch on the softer side. Not mushy, but very soft and lacked that nice chewiness and snap. However there was plenty of spice, tang and creaminess from the chorizo buttermilk sauce. THE MEDITERRANEAN ($17.00). Now for the main purpose, the entry for the burger challenge was one pork and one beef patty on a poppy seed brioche with roasted peppers and onions, ricotta and provolone cheese, pickled chilies and dried tomatoes. The fresh and soft poppy seed brioche held the burger well and captured all the meaty juices from the beef. The beef patty exhibited a nice char and the roasted peppers, pickled chillies and provolone were a great addition, but we could have done without the pork as it was dry. POUND O' MUSSELS ($18.00) AND FRIES ($4.00). Every order of a burger or sandwich comes with a side of fries, which were crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. The fries soaked up the double smoked bacon, talisman ale, butter and winter herbs broth well despite that the beer was not fully cooked down. In addition, the buttery and tender mussels were a touch overcooked and not juicy. HICKORY SMOKED SIDE RIBS ($25.00). Last up was my favourite item from the evening, their signature (declared by me) house smoked hickory side ribs! We could smell the smokiness from across the room before the ribs arrived at the table. The barbecue sauce was filled with spices and was not too sweet while the ribs were tender and still meaty, they had bite. The ribs also came with more of those crispy fries, fresh coleslaw and a side of the addicting barbecue sauce with layers of flavours. BEIGNETS ($10.00). For dessert we ordered a plate of mini beignets and tried all the sauces, berry, peanut butter, chocolate and lemon curd. All the sauces were point on and did not taste overly sweet. Moreover, the light and fluffy beignets resembled Chinese egg puffs and were a touch wet inside, but still good. The Ellis overall served well executed food especially for a gastropub. I mean, the food was better than many restaurants I have been to and the ribs are my definition of perfection. The Ellis is where the Sunset Grill used to be. They've done a great job renovating the spot. It's now much brighter and feels more open. Service was prompt, friendly but not overbearing. We came in for brunch. The menu during this time is small and keeps to brunch options and a few lunch options (I.e. Hamburger. Salad and Ruben sandwich). We ordered the ellis breakfast and the bacon and avocado Benny. The portions are generous. I really enjoyed the ellis breakfast as the scrambled eggs were fluffy and the soda bread is delicious. You also get a choice between the sausage patty or bacon. I noticed on the menu afterwards that it was supposed to come with a tomato jam but all we got was regular ketchup. The Benny was standard. The eggs were supposed to be poacher soft but were more a medium which is no big deal. There was a good portion of avocado and bacon. It was also topped with spinach which I don't love on a Benny as I find it messy and awkward to cut into. This dish came with hash browns and a side salad. I'd love to come back and check out their dinner menu as some of the offerings on it sounded interesting and I've also heard great things about their veggie burger. read more

My husband and I stayed in Kitsilano during our trip to Vancouver and the Ellis was our first restaurant in the city; it did not disappoint!!! The Ellis has a small, but nice selection of beer and wine (several from BC), along with several cocktails. We shared the rockfish tartare, watermelon/burrata salad, and the salmon entree. Everything was delicious, but the salmon was the real winner. It was cooked perfectly and very flavorful. The portions were on the larger side and we were content after the three shared dishes. Our server was very friendly, attentive, and never left us without a drink. We would definitely return here next time we are in Vancouver. read more

I'm glad The Ellis has survived the terrible struggles through Covid and it really is a great little bar with a good choice of beers and decent patio but the food is tasty yet horrendously over-flavoured. Why make something so over-poweringly soaked in garlic and sauce? To the extent the starter ruined the entree for me especially since the entree was a repeat garlic and dressing overdose and the sautéed veggies were literally burnt black :-( I even had a bite of my husband's veggie burger but all I could taste was garlic sauce. Aside from that, I cannot fault the service. I didn't comment to the server about the food because he'd certainly made up for it... but I honestly don't think I can stomach eating here again.
