Thick miso ramen with pork belly
    Rita K.

Decent ramen spot in downtown Winnipeg, . I've had ramen in Japan and SF Bay/NY, and this place doesn't compare, but given the ramen selection in Winnipeg, this is not bad. It's an interesting concept with dwarf decor, two story with a gift shop on top, and a very extensive menu. From the outside you wouldn't expect this place to serve Japanese foods. They serve noodle dishes (ramen, udon, yakisoba, etc), rice plates, curry, appetizers, and so much more. Seriously their menu is so extensive and I wanted to try more items. We were seated immediately and scanned the bar code to check out their menu. The prices seemed pretty decent, especially compared to the pricing we're used to back at home. We all got the ramen - my mom had the dwarf miso ramen with chicken, I had the thick soup miso ramen with pork belly, and bro tried the black sesame ramen with pork belly. I got mines with medium spice. We also shared a pot of jasmine tea - came out in a cute pot and we asked for 3 cups. The tea was scorching hot so be sure to let it seep and cool for at least 5-10 minutes. The noodles came out in about 10 minute. My broth wasn't too thick or salty, I was expecting it to have more flavor. The spice paste had a good kick. I was a bit disappointed in the pork - I was hoping it'd be charred like the other ramen bowls I've had but it was just boiled/steamed thick slab of pork. Yes it was thick but it was 75% fat. I felt grossed out and ate only half, way too fatty for me. My mom enjoyed her ramen so I will bump it up an extra star, and I love how the menu is very diverse. Moreover the pricing wasn't so bad so I'd be back here if I'm in town again.

Takoyaki with plain sauce and bonito flakes

+.5 for service It's a good place if you haven't experienced non-sushi Japanese dining before, but if you're visiting from somewhere that has these kind of restaurants, don't expect too much from here. Dwarf no Cachette sounds French and Japanese at the same time, which makes sense given its location in St. Boniface. I came here for lunch given its excellent reviews here, and the fact I haven't found a great ramen place in Winnipeg yet. The menu is very extensive, with choices ranging from ramen to don to traditional Japanese snacks, as well as dessert. They also have some ramen specials that are updated every month or two. I had the hokkaido butter red miso ramen and a plain sauce takoyaki. Sounds like an interesting ordeal, however it was definitely pricy (over $20). Unfortunately I didn't feel the value was there. The takoyaki was actually one of the better ones I've had in my life, and I've had quite a lot back in my hometown of Toronto and Markham, as well as in Japan. Unfortunately, the ramen was a disappointment. The egg was not runny at all, and there was...way too much activity in the bowl. Add some crab meat, butter, pork, bean sprouts, veggies...sadly everything clashed and it wasn't enjoyable at all for me. Not to mention the ramen was on the overcooked side. Service fortunately was very good, and there's a card you can get from here for further discounts if you're a regular. Unfortunately I don't see myself returning unless specifically requested to.

Friendly staff, adorable set up, and the food is AMAZING. It's nice to be able to get a proper bowl of ramen, which I am very new to! Lots of unique desserts and a few off menu items as well, so be sure to ask what kind of ice cream selection they have if you order a sundae. The gift shop upstairs is full of little treasures! No complaints here :)

This was excellent! Loved it, just like in Japan and perfect for a cold day in Winnipeg.

This was a good location with plenty of parking and legit Ramen! The service was fast. The decor is slightly bizarre but if you are going for the great ramen then just ignore the surroundings. I had the miso ramen and it was spot on, just like in Japan.

This is the cutest Japanese Restaurant, I've been too after staying here in Winnipeg for 3 years! My friends and I had lunch there a few days ago, and I am quite surprised by how fast our food was served to us, and they taste great! There is also a gift shop on the first floor of the restaurant and they sell the cutest items that you won't be able to buy anywhere in Winnipeg. I suggest you guys to visit this wonderful restaurant and have a great time!

    White sesame ramen

It's a nice dining area. The menus are printed now. I got the miso ramen and my bf got the white sesame ramen. They look pretty much the same and I think they even taste pretty much the same. They were playing Studio ghibli music and the servers were very nice. We couldn't finish our meals so the server brought us take out containers which broke just from one being on top of the other which really sucked cause one bowl of ramen cost about $15. It's a decent size bowl though and the "toppings" are good.

The WAG was on my list to visit for years. I finally made it happen by driving the long drive from…read morethe US. Was it worth it? Oh, yeah! I geek out on Inuit sculpture and this museum has a treasure trove. The lobby of the modern white addition to this museum has a multi-story wavy glass vitrine filled with Inuit pieces. It's a delicious appetizer so I eagerly went up the stairway and into a massive gallery with rows of Inuit pieces, I felt like I was 5 years old and wanted to jump up and down. Every piece is beautifully displayed and illuminated in a white-walled room that, despite having no windows, is perfectly lighted. Art appreciation is so much easier and pleasant in a room like this. This 'Art by Inuit' exhibition is a survey from approximately 200 BCE to present day. It includes typical hunting and domestic scenes of which Inuit art is most well known. There are also many works that explore the human psyche. For me, this is the humble and sincere strength of Inuit art that can grab the viewer. The small exhibition titled 'Gasoline Rainbows' features the work of Tarralik Duffy. Her leather gas cans find the sculptural beauty in the everyday world. Her Spam-container-looking leather sculpture called 'Klik' is a biting reminder of how western foods replaced the traditional foods of these northern communities. There's more to the WAG in their ultra-cool Brutalist building. A surprising gallery of European Old Masters is one of the better small collections in Canada. Another gallery has Impressionist and mid-20th century paintings. (The harsh lighting in these galleries could use the magic touch from the Inuit galleries.) A cavernous exhibition featuring the meticulous works of Tim Gardner, an artist who I'm embarrassed to say that I'd never heard of, blew me away. That one person could churn out so many detailed paintings and watercolors seems impossible. His works include portraits, images of liquor bottles, hyper-realistic paintings copied from amateur photos, and images of Los Angeles so engaging that I felt as he had entered my mind and tagged along on bike rides through my old neighborhoods. The WAG is a joy, both architecturally and in the art on display. For dessert, the gift shop can't be missed. Several Canadian art museums do something that is more rare in the States: feature and sell compelling works by local and regional artists. This isn't the books, mass-produced art/souvenirs, and t-shirts often for sale in other museums. There is genuine one-of-a-kind art and shelves of superior quality artisan-created crafts for sale. It's like a little museum in itself. I happily walked out with an Inuit sculpture that could have been included in the exhibition upstairs.

I've never seen anything like it in a museum before and it was an interesting idea. I happened to show up during the opening for this event, so the gallery was pretty lively. While there are wall cards giving background on the curatorial direction and on individual pieces, I found they assumed a familiarity with Manitoba's history that I lacked. It was refreshing to see so many pieces of art by artists I'm unfamiliar with and to leave with a long list of things to look up later. It inspired me to pick up some books after my visit. That said, they also have a small, thoughtful selection of the sort of stuff you expect to see in an art museum in North America. So if you want to see representations of the standard European and Canadian art movements and pieces by familiar names, you'll find those, too.
