We don't usually eat breakfast, but an early dinner the night before and a late flight the morning of, and the desire to have a really good breakfast at the Reading Terminal Market, led us to this place. We got there right after they opened and sat at the counter. The staff is very friendly and the food was amazing. They put a substantial amount of blueberries in the pancakes, and the turkey bacon was actually very good. Almost like a country ham, instead of bacon from a bird. My chipped beef over home fries was amazing. The gravy was creamy and flavorful and the potatoes were perfectly cooked and had enough pieces with crispy edges to elevate the whole dish. I can't recommend this place enough. Everything that the ladies brought out looked so delicious. I didn't try the apple dumplings, so I'm a little disappointed in that because I'm 100% certain it would have been amazing. read more

You cannot get a better breakfast in Philadelphia than here. This is a spot in the Reading terminal market that is run by Pennsylvania Dutch Amish people. The menu is very down home country cooking.. everything is made fresh to order and looks delicious and tastes even better. There is not one thing on the menu that's not good. We stopped for breakfast this morning. We had to wait in line which is fairly typical. However, the line goes fast because the service is fast. There is counter seating in one of two counter areas. The menu has a mix of eggs, sandwich, sandwiches, breakfast meat, cream, chip beef all delicious made to order pancake pancakes. They usually offer two house specials, one for breakfast and one for lunch. We opted for the breakfast sandwich with eggs and bacon. The bacon they serve is fresh from the farm deliciousness. I had the cream chip beef over toast with a side of homemade fries and of course I had to order the bacon too because it's that good.. everything came out hot and delicious. The cream chip beef just hits different than every diner I've ever been to. It's so savory and delicious with large chunks of chipped beef.. the potatoes or standard homemade fried potatoes just like the diner makes them, but they just tasted better. We also ordered the apple dumpling because why not when you go to a Pennsylvania Dutch restaurant. It came in a delicious sugary sauce with whipped cream on it. We couldn't even finish it, but it was so delicious.. They offer fresh coffee. They also serve soft drinks and fresh squeeze juice. Judging by the people on the left and right of us, they enjoyed their meal as much as we did. All in for a meal was $44. That included a gratuity. That's fairly standard for a meal, but what a deal for what you get and as good as it is. You may have to wait a short time, but I promise you it's worth the wait. This was the place people told us to try for breakfast. It's located inside the Reading Terminal Market which is a huge food hall with shops and restaurants. We got there just after 9am on a Friday and were able to snag two seats at the counter. The service was quick and the food was great! I just got eggs and toast but it was all fresh and delicious. The real star was the homemade jam and freshly squeezed OJ. It's loud and chaotic in the market but that's part of the whole vibe! read more

It's simple. I last reviewed them 12 years ago. I've been back more than once since then. And nothing has changed. The consistency and simplicity of this place is something to be proud of. In a market where all sorts of food is available, it's equally as special to sit here and just get a hot turkey sandwich smothered in gravy with mashed potatoes. Because the mashed potatoes will be the best you've ever had. The turkey will be fresh off the bone. The whole meal will feel as comforting as a warm blanket on a winter night. It's one of the few places where I consider the prices to still be reasonable for what you get. There's nothing like a good Amish meal. Dutch Eating Place is one of my favorite restaurants in the Philadelphia Reading Terminal Market. They have counter seating with prompt waitress service. I love just about everything on their menu and one of my favorites is the ham-loaf with mashed potatoes, absolutely delicious! The counter service can get so busy that you have to wait in line for seats. If you're on a busy schedule, they also have a takeout counter next to the seating area. You definitely want to experience this Pennsylvania Dutch restaurant when you're visiting Philly. read more

My omelet was great. The bacon was crispy and plentiful. The grits were grits. They have a special house strawberry jam that sits on the table. It's delicious. But be warned though. We stopped for brunch and this place did not disappoint. It was pretty busy when we arrived, but the staff did a great job keeping things moving and getting people in and out quickly, so our wait was short. Personally, I do not think it is a good idea of using a microwave to warm any thing in in a proper resturant, so 1 star deducted. Otherwise, great friendly people working there. Jam somehow magically infused into it all giving a touch of sweetness.. but not too much. All served on fresh, perfectly toasted rye bread. The daily special juice was even right up my alley- fresh ginger, orange, turmeric, I don't know what else.. but it was tasty, refreshing, and a healthy feeling waker-upper. All this, and they are most known for the Apple Dumplings. I was a bit skeptical after years of "great" apple pies and turnovers that seem to have gelatin as their top ingredient. and granular sugar on top (why would anybody do that to a good fruit pie?!). Well.. I was pleasantly surprised! It was legit apple in a flakey crust with tasty whipped cream. I decided to get something sweet and tried the warm apple dumpling. Staff at the register was very friendly. She offered whipped or heavy cream to top off the dumpling. The dumpling was covered in a cinnamon apple sauce. The crust was flaky and filled with a good amount of sliced apples. It was warm, sweet and hit the spot. I had the chicken salad sandwich with fries and an iced. Son had the turkey sandwich with the chips. We also shared the cheese curds. My dad for the DEB burger and we finished with the apple dumpling. The chicken salad was good. I don't like a lot of pickles and vegetables and such in my chicken salad and this didn't seem to have any. When my plate came I was super excited because the fries were definitely fresh cut however they weren't very crispy. I bet a soak first would help crisp them up. The cheeee curds were great. I'm pretty hesitant to order cheese curds as some places don't do it right. But these were tasty. Everyone enjoyed their entrees. I love this place! Third or fourth time here while visiting Philly. You just can't get a better meal for the money. What a bargain. The food is fresh and the service is great! We had the creamed chip beef. I never had it that good. Definitely not out of a jar!! . The beef wasn't overly salted and tasted really fresh. The strawberry jam tastes exactly what grandma used to make fresh from her garden. So delicious. I think I ate a third of the jar...couldn't stop. The seating is first come first serve and if there's a wait, it usually goes fast. Well worth it. It was clean and servers were very efficient. I love the buzz of all the businesses around. There are a lot of great dining options in Reading Terminal but I always make a point of stopping by here at least once if I'm in Philly for any length of time. Last fall (could've sworn I reviewed, must have forgotten!) my wife and I spent some time in town as tourists and I tried the open-faced turkey with mashed potatoes and gravy as well as the apple dumpling. Both were delicious. This time around, in town for work, I opted for the turkey melt and an order of cheese curds. The melt was crispy, the bacon crisp, and the turkey as flavorful as I remembered. The cheese curds are fantastic, the serving portion huge (could not finish those as much as I tried). I've yet to order a breakfast platter here but many surrounding me did and everything looked fantastic. Friendly service, fast prep, fair prices, and (usually) ample seating. One of the quieter corners in Reading too, so nothing to complain about whatsoever. read more

We were able to stop by and dine in at Dutch Eating Place after landing and were excited to try the apple dumplings they're so famous for. Their diner is inside the Reading Terminal, and when you are inside you're immediately hit by the produce and the diners, butcher shop inside. It's a quick and walk to have a seat at Dutch Eating Place, or you can place a pickup order and go on your way. We sat in, and immediately were greeted and handed a menu, and offered drinks. We had coffee and a water, and started to browse. We settled on a blueberry pancake, the cream chipped beef, and the teen got a French toast with home fries. We were excited because Dutch Eating Place had amazing reviews! The food also smelled amazing; and they were pretty busy for an early morning. You know I feel bad because their reviews are great, but our food was pretty mediocre. The best thing we had was the blueberry pancake. It was so big and tasty! My creamed chipped beef was great, but it was warm!! Why?!?! It would have been so much better if it was hot, but I still ate the entire thing. The French toast was also heavy on eggs, and the home fries were different than what were used to. They were roughly chopped, some of the too pieces were crispy, but the deeper into the plate, the more soft and soggy they were and they lacked flavor. The coffee was okay, nothing to rave about. Now the apple dumpling was great- it was different, hot, and tasty. A couple bites in and we were hit with a terrible sweet tooth so we stopped eating it, but overall a great try since we were open minded this entire trip looking for food that was different than Vegas. In my 2+ years living here I've found that The Dutch Eating Place is one of the only Center City breakfast joints worth visiting. The overall concept is a traditional breakfast: fresh OJ, pancakes, omelettes; nothing avant garde or fancy. The selling point is that you can have a filling breakfast for under $10. They accept credit cards which, while unfitting with the traditional Pennsylvania Dutch vibe, is a welcomed convenience.
