Well we went with a group. I didn't have high hopes but the food was outstanding. I think between the group of 18 I think we ordered most of the menu. I had the meatloaf sandwich on home made bread. Jen had the Grilled cheese on home made bread. They don't skimp! The meatloaf was moist delicious and at least 3/4 pound. The bread smelled amazing and tasted just as good. Our server took the orders, delivered drinks etc and when it was time for the bill she was fast and efficient. Great job! read more

Much bigger inside than it looks. Parking lot was packed when we arrived at 1pm on a Saturday. Food and service was really great. Everything prepare to order even the crispy hashbrowns. Men's restroom needs some restoration. Walls looked like they had water damage and needs repainting. Floor could have used a mop. read more

We stopped in to the Dutch Cafe for a quick breakfast. I had the meat lovers' omelet and she had the breakfast scramble. Both were perfect 10's. The last few times we ate here we were pretty disappointed. I can't believe I gave them another shot. We went for lunch around 12:30 Half of their small buffet was still breakfast. Maybe on this day they were having breakfast all day long or something. We had already ate breakfast about 5 hours beforehand. I wasn't interested in more breakfast. The other half of their tiny buffet was dinner items. Only one meat was offered, white meat fried chicken. I don't like white meat. I found 3 wings and thought I'd try those. They weren't anything to write home about. KFC would have been 100% better. The only other item that looked appetizing was their instant mashed potatoes. They did have a few other sides on their buffet, but they didn't look appealing. Some sort of spaghetti / gulash or something. It's was 85% empty and all that was left looked nasty. there was some green beans too. I glanced over the breakfast items. The scrambled eggs tub was empty. The was some sort of quiche but it was 80% empty. The ham had one little piece left that I attempted to salvage. I did attempt to build some sort of sandwich from some bacon and the only piece of ham left in the warmer. I put them on one of their rolls. I doused it with hot sauce so it wouldn't be totally dry. Well, I wouldn't try that again. It was pretty gross. The salad bar looked like a war zone. I did manage to make a small salad. I even took the last three croutons to put on top. To their credit, it did taste just like a salad. Maybe they were winding down because they were closing in a few hours. Heck, even the unsweetened tea was terrible. I never, ever put sugar in my tea.....except today. It didn't help. Having a buffet is probably kinda tricky to make a profit in todays marketplace with food costs the way they are. I wonder if their game plan is to offer items that aren't very good so you don't eat very much. Please, if I ever think about going here again, somebody try to stop me. read more

Stopped by for Sunday brunch buffet and boy are we glad we did. The buffet incluofall the breakfast items plus a lunch buffet with fried chicken, noodles & what tasted to me like homemade mashed potatoes.. the ham was not salty at all... We stopped in after going to the Grissom Air Force base museum. We ordered 3 hand breaded tenderloins with homemade bread. They came out pipping hot and were a little thicker and seasoned perfectly. The breaded fries were season and supper tasty. They lunch soup and salad bar adds to the great lunch counter feel of the restaurant. My regular breakfast places were busy, but I drive past this place on my way to work, so I thought I would give it a try - I was a little surprised that with the name "Dutch Cafe", I saw nothing Dutch on the menu After being seated, waited more then 5 minutes to be acknowledged and place my drink order, so i had to flag down one of the waitstaff walking by to ask where the server for my area was. Server comes over takes my order, and says she will be right back with my drinks. Five more minutes pass before the drinks show up While I am waiting for my food, I hear other waitstaff asking their customers what kind of toast they want, and that seems strange as I was only asked if I wanted toast. What do I get when the food shows up? The but end of white bread, but it was burned to a black waste. The food being dropped of was the last of seeing the server, no drink refills, no "how was everything", nothing. The omelet itself was a decent omelet, but I can't see the need to ever stop again. read more

A hidden gem across from Grissom AFB. Easy to miss if you're driving north on Highway 31. We stopped in as we were headed north for delicious homemade pie and coffee, then again returning south for a country breakfast. Two pieces of pie and two coffees for $10.75. Several varieties of homemade pie on the menu. My blueberry crunch was quite good and spouse enjoyed the chocolate cream. Country breakfast was huge and tasty. Check out the mile high biscuit in the photo. It was perfect. Moist and delicious. The other star of breakfast was the giant, plate-sized pancake. Tasty, a meal in itself. Good service, welcoming. Go for the food, not for the decor. Be aware that well water is served. Didn't effect the coffee. If you're a Carhartt fan, a large building is next to the cafe filled with all things Carhartt in several colors. Good place to stretch your legs. The Dutch cafe is going to be a regular stop for us. read more

I go back & forth on this place. First, fell in love with their sugar cream pie. Love @ first bite. But, over the years that has gone down hill. The last 2 pies I bought were very lumpy. Sugar cream pie should not have lumps. The last one reminded me more of cottage cheese than a cream pie. The bathrooms need attending. They're a dump. Ordered something off the menu & saw the cook come get something off the buffet to make my entree. Kind of uncool. The best I've had there is the Breakfast Haystack. I wanted to kiss the cook! Nothing fancy, but real good! Food fit for a king! Not sure how to take the staff. They all know what they are doing. The place is usually busy. But, it is too business & not a lot of smiles or small talk. Hardly any. I really enjoy the thought of eating at the Dutch Cafe, but my family (of 5) has slowly fallen off as its fans. Food was hot and pretty much your typical breakfast type items. Menu looked good throughout but we were there for breakfast items. The country fried steak was delish, had good flavor. Took our server a few to acknowledge us but she was sweet and friendly. All of their desserts are handmade so I look forward to stopping in for some pie or cheesecake (I was eyeing the white chocolate raspberry one they had that day but decided against it...still regret that LoL). It's a huge space that could accommodate a large group of people which is always beneficial. They also offer buffets during certain times of the day and on weekends so that could be another thing to check out next time. We will definitely be back! Dutch Cafe is a bit of an amalgamation. You've got a cafe with (I'm told) pretty good coffee. Then there's the bakery, with decently priced homemade pies. And then there's the restaurant, with a hot buffet and a salad buffet and a pretty extensive (very American) menu. Overall, it's a very gezzelig place. (Hey, you say you're Dutch.. *you* figure it out!) Nothing outstanding food-wise, but decent food, appropriately priced, good, friendly service. I like this place. It's typical breakfast food, nothing extraordinary except the homemade bread which was fantastic! My veggie omelet was good but I hate the frozen hash browns diners like this serve. Not worthy the calories. Like most buffets, this had a generous selection of food, including chicken & noodles & mashed potatoes, fried chicken, roast beef, ham all types of breakfast foods and fresh vegetables. All was tasty, but the roast beef was dry and corn kernels large. The salad bar had good selections with a nicely shredded lettuce for the back. The place is large enough that there was no waiting , in spite of a full parking lot and many 'local' families sharing their Sunday meal. I had the standard desert of fresh apple cobbler and soft serve ice cream; but the cafe is known for their large selection of homemade pies. Undoubtedly the most tasteless food eaten. Chicken and noodles consisted of undercooked noodles with canned, unseasoned sauce, and rubbery chicken. Sides were canned green beans and canned corn. Epitome of a down home diner! Will for sure be back. Was there during the week, but on the weekends they have a buffet. We ordered meatloaf and beef Manhattan. Each of these entrees came with 3 sides. We chose the mini salad bar (which counts as two sides) and then Mac & Cheese as the 3rd side. The pancakes at another table looks so fluffy and tasty that we ordered one as well. Would couldn't even begin to finish all of the food so we have lunch for tomorrow as well. The meatloaf was moist, flavorful and tasted like it was made on-site with good ingredients. Would certainly order again. I have been here numerous times for breakfast. I have been here a limited number of times at other times of day. People who are saying it is expensive have never eaten in Chicago. Or Indy. Or Fort Wayne for that matter. Two people can eat a breakfast buffet with a drink a tip for $30. If you're the eggs and bacon type you can get out cheaper than that. It's Amish food. If you haven't had Amish food before, it's ultra-white people food. It's simple, good, and there's a lot of it. If you're looking for creative seasoning or fancy, off-the-wall hipster food I cannot express the degree to which you have come to the wrong place. Your waitress is likely to be wearing a floor-length denim skirt unironically and she is proud of it. They have free wi-fi and they do not see the humor in this. There is apple butter and peanut butter fluff at every table and they make the bread. Honestly, the best thing at the place is the toast. I'm not kidding. It's damned good toast if you get the homemade bread. Get it. So here's what you do: You're driving through this forsaken stretch of highway 31 and you stop with your family at 6am on a Thursday. Everybody eats all of the quiche, fried mush (polenta for those of us not from Real America), eggs, and bacon you can until you hate yourself and then you sleep in the car until you forget. So disappointed like the other reviewer Father's Day experience. The sign says they serve till 8pm. Now we did get in about 7:40 pm. Not a lot of choices off highway 31 to south bend. The waitress told us the kitchen started cleaning grills at 7:30 pm and can only order limited items!! Seriously. This is a restaurant for gosh sake!! The buffet looked terrible dried up meats and no sides left. Terrible you think people would be happy for business read more
