They still have the goofy hours closing at three. It felt dark & dingy. Pieces of trash on floor runners as walked to our seats. Pieces of napkin? The cloth seats of the booths are stained. Although it's always been overpriced, it's gone up even more, and it's just not pleasant now. Three women at the front hostess desk didn't acknowledge my party right away, and when one did, she seemed annoyed we were there. Our server wasn't any more welcoming nor friendly. Worse, actually. I received a large mug of decaf. No non-dairy options and given bowl of individual cups of half-and-half. While it proved to actually be devoid of caffeine, the coffee didn't taste good at all. Not sure what brand they must be using. No refills offered for our table, but I couldn't even finish this cup. $3.00 for this crap. Soft drinks are nearly $4, juice almost $3 and $4 depending on the size... Everything here is extremely overpriced. The portion of hash browns I was given was huge, but they were not good either. I normally have trouble with undercooked hash browns with no color when I go out. These were overcooked and too crunchy to get on a fork. Greasy. Rye toast okay. I'm sure real dairy butter. I didn't bother to ask... I'm glad they offer mushrooms. However, I could tell they came from a can. I also like that tomato juice is an option, but I didn't get that this time. Rye bread is a welcomed sight. Given checks before we were finished. No drink refills offered. I was never brought the straw the server said she owed me. She only had one on hand. You must take your check up front to pay. As annoyed as they seemed to have us come in the doors, you'd think they would have checked us out sooner. My two sides ala carte with coffee came to over $11 before tip. Not pictured, a lady at my table paid even more for a fountain drink and their granola and yogurt parfait with fruit. It looked good, but good Lord. $12 and change?? Just really unenthusiastic attitudes. Food quality and atmosphere went WAYYY down. I feel like I need a shower and to put my clothes in the wash from feeling greasy and having that oily smell cling to my shirt which was fresh when I went in. I don't know how this place is still in business other than the fact that it's one of the only restaurant options in this awful little town, so you don't have much choice if you want to go somewhere to sit down... I don't plan to return. The staff won't ever have to be inconvenienced by me again. You had one job...

My Biscuits and Gravy tasted like they were made with spoiled ingredients. The eggs were very undercooked. The hash browns were cold. The waitress was inattentive. Depending on if you are ordering to stay and eat or to go, you can either eat in your vehicle or they do have a couple of picnic tables you can set at. Most recently, maybe a year or two ago, they added a little playground area for kiddos to play while waiting for their meal to be delivered. Most of the time, the car hops gals will bring your food out to your vehicle, on a tray that hooks on to your driver or passenger side window. The service is always excellent. The food is always amazing and the car hops whom take your order start their first job working here while they are in high schooler or on summer break. I highly recommend you try out B&K - South, once in your life, in Peru, Indiana. They're so kind, caring and deliver your order in a very timely manner. I also recommend their gallons of Root Beer. They have the absolute BEST Root Beer in town. You can buy it by the pint or gallon to take home. Its a MUST! The one and only complaint I have seen/heard from people is the parking when B&K first opens. (They are only open from Spring to the beginning of Fall.). They do get super busy when reopening for the season, but it is really not too bad to where the wait is way too long. (Also would depend on how long your lunch break is.) I would play it smart and call in to order ahead of time and pick your order up if you don't have a lot of time to wait. Once the excitement of reopening dies down, the parking gets a LOT better and service speeds up as well. I always have given B&K - Southside a 10/10. They have never disappointed!

It still feels like playing roulette everywhere I go, so I prefer to make my own at home. I just cannot do caffeine. I mostly go to shops like this to feel like a human out doing something. The coffee tastes good, but 'm docking a star because even as I type this after leaving, I can feel the not fun effects of caffeine. It can be hit or miss with consistency of what constitutes a large and how milky your drink is, the prices seem to vary from visit to visit, and I often don't recognize the employees. High turnover? There is no public restroom which can be an issue whilst consuming beverages. Aroma also charges a fee if you pay with plastic, so I try to carry cash. I recall being charged for a cup of ice for my herbal tea in the past. Sometimes the tables aren't so clean and the baked goods case can have flies in it. It's looked better this summer. The wooden chairs can be wobbly. Overall it has decent atmosphere. It smells good like caramel when you walk in. There are two metal tables with cafe chairs as well as a bench outside, weather permitting. Rat Pack & classical outside. When music is on inside it's a different genre. The hours can be funky especially in winter or even be unexpectedly closed, but they are never open past 5 PM. Peru rolls the sidewalks up pretty early. I do like that they offer plant milk and have decaf without a weird lecture like the place around the corner... They usually have soy and almond. No coconut, but I usually go with soy lately anyway. Raw sugar, stevia for Lydia, and at least one decaffeinated tea. The baristas I've had recently were pretty pleasant. They have an array of baked goods including bagels and some other food and drink things in a refrigerated case. I've not ever tried the food myself though it looks good. I'm assuming it's local artwork which I've seen for sale on the walls along with handmade jewelry, mugs. They have a sandwich board for a donation program where you can buy a coffee for someone in need. Aroma has loyalty punch cards as well. You can enter the bakery next door through an adjoining door. Walking past I saw the case next door had cupcakes and heard a cake order being taken. So, while Aroma has flaws and I've been to better in other towns, the prices are pretty reasonable for this century and the atmosphere is alright. Cozy and on the Bohemian side. I don't go running there with excitement, but it's alright to sit and chat, especially when it's not crowded, which it often isn't. I like the downtown location.

Even though I long for the old days where trays could easily be dumped into trashcans, etc. I do like it here. Service varies. On one occasion I wasn't acknowledged at all. Other times I've received excellent and immediate service whether they were slow or busy. Sometimes food comes out fast. Sometimes it's slower but not excruciatingly so. There are times the tables, awkward trashcans, and drink station could use a little more attention being wiped down, but this restaurant is clean overall. I like the booths along the large windows. The other diners have been pleasant. It's not a rowdy or demanding crowd from my experience. There seem to be some regulars. Of all the fast food places available, I like Burger King the best. One reason why I like Burger King is that they have the Impossible Whopper. Even though it's been overdone or sloppy at times and never resembles a stock photo, it is something I can eat and veganize. Fry portions seem smaller than I remember from days of old and prices have definitely gone up quite a bit. It's about $10 for the Impossible with a medium fry and close to $12 for the large Impossible combo. There is a charge for water if you're not into consuming the fountain drinks. The regular cheeseburger patty isn't big enough to fit the bun and have also increased in price. You gotta love the signature sesame seed bun though. Despite minor flaws, this is a quiet place where I enjoy sitting once in a while even though I normally don't eat fast food. The overhead music is usually decent as well with a lot of 80s tunes.

You have to…read moremaneuver your way through a cluttered and busy truck stop called JJ's Travel Plaza to get to the rather small Subway. The first thing I saw was a dirty vent near the ceiling above the fountain drink station. Mold? It was like being in a short hallway. Tight space. They have small tables for two along the wall where you stand in line. There were more tables which seat two people around the corner. I saw two diners sitting at one away from the line. The tables didn't look clean. I was going to eat at a table outside of the travel plaza, but it was hot and too loud out there. A truck stop employee was running a power washer. This truck stop also houses a rather dirty McDonald's restaurant. Two people were ahead of us ordering sandwiches. I stayed at the register end closer to the entrance. After a few minutes, we were told they could help us "down here," and I announced I was picking up. One of the two women working asked my name, so I gave my last name. I was asked to verify my first name as well, as if there was a crowd of people with my last name waiting for sandwiches. (There was no one else there besides the people already mentioned.) I discovered that the brown bag sitting atop what I believe was a toaster or small oven was my sandwich, so it was ready before I arrived. The sandwich artist did put a decent amount of veggies on it as requested. It was just overloaded with mustard and messy, and there was no napkin in the bag. I didn't see that until I was already eating in the car. I wouldn't go out of my way to this Subway to dine in since it's small and the cleanliness is a little questionable. It's also at a busy intersection on highway 31 full of trucks, busses, cars, and road construction. The staff weren't overly friendly but okay. Overall, it was quick and a better experience than the Subway on Broadway in Peru, although I believe they both have the same rude district manager. At least I finally figured out how to use my digital gift cards by using the app, as the staff on Broadway never could scan them. I was also able to join rewards on the app. I really only go to Subway because they have avocado. I just wish you could sub the cheese with it. (I have at other times and locations.) I had to pay an upcharge. Understandable, but I leave the cheese off. Even with a coupon, this was over $10 for a footlong. If they had more veggies for their wraps, I'd prefer to go to the family owned cafe across from the Subway restaurant on Broadway in Peru.
