Pretty interior minus the dirty ceiling fan my friend observed
    Sara B.

Located across from the Peru Post Office. Street parking which was empty this time. It was full when I attempted to check this place out previously. Decor & architecture were interesting. Pretty vintage style chandeliers, painted tin ceiling tiles, & exposed brick at the back behind the counter. The white ceiling fan was dirty as my friend observed. I'm glad it was off and not flinging dust about. Pretty empty on a Wednesday evening. Open until 8 PM most nights, so better hours than a lot of Peru establishments. Closes at 9 on Friday & Saturday. Closed Sundays. The ordering process was a little strange and unexplained. You walk to the counter at the back to order. A black lit up menu was on the wall & wasn't entirely easy to see. We later discovered the menus displayed on the counter are old & don't list accurate information. I'd glanced at menu photos online taken by patrons before heading out, so I knew what the basic options were - grinders, salads, and pizza. They have no website listed online, yet had a QR code on the lit up wall menu. I'm not sure how you'd even scan that from that distance or where it takes you. They give you a number placard to place at the edge of your table, even if you're the only diners inside. They fill your soft drink for you from a fountain to the right of the counter. We sat ourselves at the cleanest booth after passing two dirtier ones. The seats on ours had visible crumbs. The girl who had taken our orders offered me a refill on my water table side. She waited for me to hand her my cup & didn't reach for it. It's a better standard to bring a fresh drink out & not put a used glass under the soda fountain not to mention other hands touching your cup, but whatever. At least two girls brought food out. My friend's "Irish nachos" looked pretty good. Smelled like potato skins. She said she liked them but could only eat about half & did not opt to take the rest to go. I think the use of frozen tater tots is meh. I'd have expected homemade potato medallions. Again, whatever. I'd ordered the veggie grinder. I asked for no cheese. Maybe I'm not understanding what a grinder is, but to my dismay, after my food arrived & staff had walked away, I realized the grilled bread had hot, coagulated mayo on it. It wasn't easy to see. I knew by taking one disgusting bite. I'd already noticed the obviously canned mushrooms when it was set in front of me. I could have dealt with the mushrooms and the sad amount of veggies on this thing even though mine had none of the most expensive ingredient which is the cheese, but mayo on a grinder? Since they serve pizza, I assumed it would have marinara on the side if anything. I returned my basket to the counter. I didn't know it came with mayo. I don't understand why anyone would think you would want mayo if you don't want cheese. I was offered a new one, but I didn't want anything at this point. I was grossed out, and there wasn't much to this sandwich. I would expect some extra veg for no cheese or at least ALL the veggies one of the menus cited this came with, that I might be asked about the other ingredients. All that aside, I was more flabbergasted that no refund was offered. I returned to our table. When my friend was finished, she went up to the counter and got them to reverse the charges on my card for my sandwich. I could hear the counter girl arguing that it stated "mayo" on the lit up menu, which I did not see, and said the "old" paper menu on the counter doesn't list it. They must have changed the menu a few times as the two I saw online also didn't list mayonnaise, DID list more vegetables, and listed a price hike. It wasn't clear whether you bus your own table. Again, no direction. Poorly thought out procedure. I'm not against tipping if I order myself standing at a counter if it's exceptional service or if I think I have a chance I'll be remembered and get priority service upon return, but I don't like the idea of a place like this asking for a tip at checkout before your visit is completed. They had a prominently displayed tip jar for cash as well. Ugh. Anyway, another sad excuse of a restaurant in this town. Quite half-assed attempts at a vegetarian menu. If you are vegan, I recommend staying away. That's what I'm going to do. I can cook far better food myself at home. It'd just be nice to have somewhere decent to go in this area for ambience and atmosphere. This was like a bar without the bar combined with a better decorated Subway. I don't often hand out one star reviews. You may like this place and the prices if it suits your dietary needs. I'll be inspecting menus more carefully and will be extra specific while out in the future. It seems I need to whip out sanitizer wipes as well. If they paid more attention to menu and service detail as much as decorating and had a working website along with maybe one fully plant based option, this review would have taken a different turn.

    Food

This restaurant is amazing they always have the best customer service. You always have the people at the front desk coming up to you asking if everything's OK how your food is. Also it's very nice in there and very comfortable. Totally recommend!

I've been extremely impressed with everything we've tried at Boardwalk Cafe. Grinders, salads, bread sticks, and soups are all excellent. Specifically go on Monday sometime for their grilled cheese grinder & Tomato Bisque combo. It's incredible. The staff is very friendly, food is fresh and brought out quickly, and the prices are very reasonable. This is what a restaurant is meant to be in every way.

Passing through for work, great spot to grab a delicious sandwich or pizza. Steak and cheese is fancy but tasty. The ham grinder was mouth watering - the sit down space is super cute. Food came out fast and the service was spot on

Very small place but seating outside. Atmosphere very nice and well decorated.. Unsure as to if you seat yourself. Did so but guess they have most of menus on a marque. Have trouble walking . Ask for menu and had a friend purchase my order while I sat. Whole process was confusing. Only Pepsi products. I had BLT without cheese. Food arrived had no mayonnaise they said it was baked in. I ask for a side of mayonnaise and the bread and sandwich-were excellent. Husband ordered the Italian beef it was good but only fair they used banana peppers instead of the Italian jardiniere should be offered on a real Italians beef with Au jus. Daughter had chicken club she says it was delicious. The breadsticks were the very best I have eaten. We ordered extra to take home and share. Will definitely recommend .

Best breadsticks in town. Love the new location. The ground sausage on their pizza is my favorite.

Prices were good, portion sizes were good. I found the food quality and taste were also good. What makes this place a must try is that is a drive in. There is an awning in case it's raining. During the day, you order at the counter. Menus on a barrel to peruse. Nothing on the wall. You normally receive a number (not today) & your beverages & food are brought to your table. Today, I was given my coffee & water at the counter to carry, but my food was brought out. So, it's counter prepay, & you tip at that time, but it's also self serve at the condiment station while you're also being waited on table side somewhat, some of the time. Confused yet? I did dine here once during dinner hours. Since I was used to the other process, I didn't know you are seated in the evening & fully waited on. I like dinner time best though it's busier. You can get takeout anytime & sweets to go from the case or table. I believe they cater & might possibly deliver, at least for groups. There is also a section which can be reserved. I hadn't been in for a couple months, & hadn't seen my favorite lady for even longer. From chatting today, I don't think she remembered me. The man working the floor is especially great. He's a food runner & busser, etc. I was confused today, as was he, as he'd set something on my table while I was prepping my coffee at the sugar station. He asked if I'd had a bread stick or a pretzel, so I responded it was a pretzel because I had indeed ordered a pretzel stick from the menu. He ended up bringing out a full size pretzel after I sat down, & I felt badly because he thought I'd ordered that. I discovered the pretzel STICK is the same as a bread stick. He was friendly & told us to enjoy the mistake. The person with me was happy to find a device charging station. I'm not sure those are available at every table nor if WiFi is offered. The first timer liked her peach tea. You can get sweetened, unsweetened, or half n half. Cheese sauce is nacho with a lil kick. I fully appreciate that the staff will make me a fresh pot of decaf when I come in. Apparently, decaf isn't too popular around here, I'm finding. I rolled with it, but Garden Gate had Folgers in the past. The Kroger brand they used today definitely didn't taste as good. When I walked up to get a refill, I noticed it was really weak & watered down. I could see through it more than tea. Sometimes you get refills at your table. Not consistently anymore. None today. No non-dairy creamer or milk options nor raw sugar. Again, I roll with it. It's not really a coffee shop per-se. However, with "cafe" in the name... Garden Gate has surprisingly good spaghetti. Not like what I can make at home, but far better than what I expected during visits before today. I would like to see more plant based options, but I remember what town I'm in. You get used to making due with what you can get around here. No fish on the menu either nor any fried foods. Sandwiches come with chips or slaw. They do have a fired pizza oven. If you like meatloaf and mashed potatoes with green beans, this would be the perfect place for you. They have daily specials on a board. Their veggie wrap is okay. The bread/pretzel sticks are buttered & also okay. Mashed potatoes, great. Never had the green beans since may contain bacon. Garden Gate good with accommodating substitution requests. I do like the long bench in back so you can sit as you wait for carryout or to be seated in the evening. Quality furnishings & ambience although the barrels from the brewery this once housed don't exactly jive. It's nice there is a private parking lot with a side door since street parking downtown can be hairy, especially this close to the courthouse. Some outdoor seating. A lot more seating inside & much better air conditioning than the old location. Better tables and chairs which are actually comfortable unlike the old place. I don't like that they pool tips. I tip extremely well, & I would like it to go to the person I tipped. I'm also not a fan of tipping at the beginning of the visit. I'll over tip & not get stellar service afterward. Did they even see it? Now I feel like George Costanza. I have been given rather large to go cups of decaf in the past. I didn't even want to ask for one today. It's usually clean though sometimes the tables & ladies' room could use extra care. Dirty tables can pile up at times. Confusing system. Good food but not much that I want. I really just go to have somewhere in this town to sit & to KNOW it's actually decaf in my cup. Sometimes it's loud, sometimes not. Service isn't quite what it was when this location first opened. It can be hit or miss where I can feel #1 or forgotten. Service usually good but not above and beyond like 6 months ago. I'm sure I'll return because, honestly, where else am I going to go? Possibly the best in Peru, yes, but I'm adjusting stars for everything stated above. It could easily be a five with some tweaks, but I won't hold my breath.

The only issue was that half the toppings I requested on the app for my sandwich were missing, but they politely gave me what I was missing in a cup when I went back up to the counter and asked. I've been using the app because, in the past, no one at this store could scan the digital gift cards I had. The app has benefits such as earning cash toward future purposes and I can easily add coupons as well as gift cards. Word to the wise though - check your order before you leave if it's to go. This has always been a pretty clean dining room save for the cobwebs on the inside window above my booth. The ladies' room door wouldn't lock. The restaurant smells like Subway bread. Heavy metal is usually playing on the speakers as it was over a year ago. Once I had my missing toppings, my sandwich was decent. Lay's is really skimping on the amount of chips they put in the little bag of Baked Lay's I got. It weighs less than 2 ounces. For nearly $2, it's not really worth getting chips. My friend said the footlong Auntie Anne's pretzel was okay. She's had better but also had worse. It's just reheated and then brushed with butter. I'm not sure if it's real butter. Overall, attention to detail with sandwich preparation and cleaning could be turned up a notch. It's pretty expensive here now even with a coupon. I could easily eat at the restaurant nextdoor or the one across the street for the same amount or less. I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to return often, but it's alright overall. It was also unclear where to pick up an app order as the rack for orders was empty. Once the line cleared, an employee asked if I was waiting on an app order. My sandwich was completed before the small line formed, it seemed... I had a good visit despite the hiccups.

I didn't bother to ask... I'm glad they offer mushrooms. However, I could tell they came from a can. I also like that tomato juice is an option, but I didn't get that this time. Rye bread is a welcomed sight. Given checks before we were finished. No drink refills offered. I was never brought the straw the server said she owed me. She only had one on hand. You must take your check up front to pay. As annoyed as they seemed to have us come in the doors, you'd think they would have checked us out sooner.
