    Vegetable Fried Rice
    Sara B.

It's meals like these that have me regretting my move to Peru... I used delivery.com on a Friday night to place and receive my order via delivery since Jing Jing Garden, surprisingly, does not deliver. Maybe it's because I'm a highfalutin city slicker in the eyes of some, but I have never before encountered a Chinese restaurant that did not deliver. I ordered Szechuan Bean Curd (tofu), which is normally my go-to, Vegetable Fried Rice, and two orders of Vegetable Spring Rolls. The tofu came with a pint of steamed white rice, and I found the chopsticks and soy sauce I requested in the bottom of the outer plastic bag. I appreciate that I got more soy sauce than the six packs I entered on my order form. I'm not sure if the delivery.com prices are inflated compared to the actual restaurant, but in any case, the prices are alarmingly high, especially for what I received. I paid far less in Indy and Saint Louis for far, far better food. The large pieces of broccoli in the Veggie Fried Rice were a nice variation, but the "quart" I received at nearly $8 seemed much smaller than my favorite joint in Speedway. It was extremely bland and disappointing. The Spring Rolls, albeit not greasy, were dry and had a strange flavor with little on the inside. At nearly $5 for four small rolls, they were not worth adding to my order. While the Szechuan Bean Curd was the best of what I ordered, was colorful, and appeared to be appetizing, it really lacked any sort of spice or flavor. It actually had a strange taste unlike what I've received every other time I've ordered this dish elsewhere. I was happy to find some nice sized mushrooms hanging out in the bottom and liked the abundance of broccoli, but the carrots were undercooked. The foil container with a flimsy plastic lid, was leaking all over the bag before I even got it in the door. I'm accustomed to plastic containers that stay sealed much better. The price was close to $10, and absolutely too high. I nearly tried the Hot and Sour soup, but now I'm glad I didn't buy anything more. I'm guessing it would be subpar and possibly leaking from a foil container as well. As I said, I was happy to see all the soy sauce packets, but there isn't enough soy sauce in the world to make these dishes taste any better. I have food in my belly after a long and trying day, but this was not the treat I was hoping for. Everything was edible at best. I'm frustrated and dissatisfied at how little I enjoyed this meal. I really wanted to like it since there are so few food options in Peru, but I just can't. Is disheartening how little variety there is here in town, and I'm in disbelief that this restaurant is held in high regard by people I know. It looks like I'll just be learning to make more of my favorite dishes myself. I really do prefer to cook my own meals, but I'm sad there is nothing worth ordering when I'm not up to the task. I can't say I'll be having Jing Jing ever again, even if the prices were to match the portions and flavor. I won't say it was the worst Chinese I've ever had, but it's just not good. Add that to the astronomical cost and extra fees imposed my delivery.com, it was a sad experience all around.

While this is the only Chinese spot in Peru it is a knockout when considering taste, portion size, price, and overall value!!!

My wife and I used to love this place. We started eating there during the ending of covid…read moresituations and the food was great. The egg rolls were amazing. Large and stuffed with veggies and fried crispy without being greasy....alas this has apparently changed. We went there today and got our usual orders (toss, and sweet and sour with yum yum sauce for my wife's rice) the egg rolls were tiny and very greasy with a very strong fish taste. The fried rice was bland and flavorless with next to no veggies, egg, or anything. My general tsos despite the sauce being a decent flavor was dry and stringy, and just this side of inedible. Was definitely not worth 30 freaking bucks. How the mighty ninja has fallen

We were promptly waited on by friendly staff who brought our food to our table. The restaurant has a nicely sized menu and will even make things and not listed. Their peanut avocado rolls are good as well as the avocado asparagus rolls they made for me that weren't a listed option. The more affordable avocado rolls are my favorite rolls. Their miso soup is good, but my absolute favorite is the vegetable tempura here. The sweet potato, broccoli, mushroom, onion, and peppers? are all good, but I could make a meal out of nothing but an entire tray of the zucchini. The person I dined with has gotten a salmon bento box both times. Cold bottled drinks are available in a cooler. I'm not sure if their fountain drinks are in working order but was told their fountain water didn't taste good at all. They also do not have any ice. Halloween spider webs complete with fake spiders are still hanging in May, and the tables and glass doors could use a bit more cleaning. If you dine in, your food is still usually in semi to go fashion but on a tray. I've been able to request containers and a bag as well as chopsticks. Being in an old former fast food building with a few flaws including a handwritten sign on the blank drive thru menu, it's nothing fancy and probably not where I'd go for a special occasion. However, the food is really good, and the prices are reasonable, so it fills the need for Japanese food in an area where there are few dining options. I believe they also have Chinese food on the menu and that the people here are from China. Dine in and take out are both available. You can even opt for pickup at the drive thru window. I'm assuming you would call ahead for that. There is some seating outside on the front patio. I am particularly fond of the booths where I can view the mostly red wall mural containing many cats in the artwork. Despite being somewhat of a hole in the wall, the food does meet or exceed what I have had elsewhere. It's fast yet made with care. It's a great option for vegetarians and vegans - something not easily found around here. I'm sure I'll return when I'm in Wabash and need an avocado roll and tempura fix.

I ordered takeout. Service was quick. It just wasn't as friendly as when they first opened. Maybe a little too fast? We were welcomed to sit in a booth as we waited. The wooden seating was uncomfortable. The seating area, table, floors, and restroom seemed sticky and dirty. It felt stuffy and greasy inside. My food was okay. It just wasn't giving an oomph feeling of wanting more. I like to be dancing in my seat with joy when consuming my favorite foods including Japanese fare. This didn't have that feeling. My tempura didn't sit well with me. I can't say it was food poisoning for sure, but I wouldn't order it again after that experience. I suspect old oil in the fryer perhaps. The hot tempura also melted through the Styrofoam containers they were in. I wish that businesses would stop using Styrofoam. While its being overpriced since it's the only Japanese restaurant in a town which already has extremely limited food options sort of makes sense, it's just not worth a third revisit for me when it comes to cleanliness and taste. On a positive note, I did take notice that the rolls I had were cut into much more manageable pieces this visit. That made it easier to chew without making a mess and looking like I lacked table manners.

Ah, okay, Japanese tempura, sushi, sashimi, okay, got it... except, why is the television on wall playing Chinese folk songs? And why is every single person on staff speaking Mandarin? All of the "huh" factor aside, this is a credible take on a middle of the road Japanese restaurant. And c'mon, this is in Peru, Indiana, not Carmel or Fishers. So, extend a little slack, tuck in, and enjoy a pretty decent Japanese meal!
