This place feels more like a bar that serves food than a restaurant, but don't let that discourage you. It is very well air conditioned (bring a jacket or sweater and wear long pants!) and, surprising for a bar, was actually quiet enough for conversation without raised voices. Our waitress the first night was Jillian and we loved her! She was extremely efficient and friendly and had helpful info about breakfast options. The wine was a generous pour, the fried cauliflower was a pleasure, and the hamburger very good. The desserts are made in house (try finding that at any other restaurant!) and we were lucky that it was Boston cream pie the first night we ate there. Sooooo good!!!! On our return visit, I had to restrain myself from getting the cauliflower again and had the brisket, which was a special that night. Perfection! Smoky, melt in your mouth meaty goodness. My dining companion said the salmon with bourbon glaze was the best salmon he had ever had. And he has lived a long life. The menu also includes fried gizzards (which I was told are frequently ordered) and fried baloney. The prices for everything were reasonable. This place is clearly popular with locals, who come in to have a drink and buy lotto tix from the vending machine by the door. Everyone was friendly and in a good mood. The folks at the next table struck up a conversation with us on their way out. If there is only one place to have dinner in downtown Peru, at least it is a great place!

There are times the tables, awkward trashcans, and drink station could use a little more attention being wiped down, but this restaurant is clean overall. I like the booths along the large windows. The other diners have been pleasant. It's not a rowdy or demanding crowd from my experience. There seem to be some regulars. Of all the fast food places available, I like Burger King the best. One reason why I like Burger King is that they have the Impossible Whopper. Even though it's been overdone or sloppy at times and never resembles a stock photo, it is something I can eat and veganize. Fry portions seem smaller than I remember from days of old and prices have definitely gone up quite a bit. It's about $10 for the Impossible with a medium fry and close to $12 for the large Impossible combo. There is a charge for water if you're not into consuming the fountain drinks. The regular cheeseburger patty isn't big enough to fit the bun and have also increased in price. You gotta love the signature sesame seed bun though. Despite minor flaws, this is a quiet place where I enjoy sitting once in a while even though I normally don't eat fast food. The overhead music is usually decent as well with a lot of 80s tunes.

Also worth mentioning is the service. I've never once had a bad interaction with wait staff. Patient, knowledgeable, helpful... doesn't matter if they're slammed or dead (and Peru certainly serves up both), the wait staff is great. Although it wasn't available when we ate there, they also make their own donuts (in a food truck!). Peru seems to attract "labor of love" little establishments like this, and this is a gem. He's even arranged with the antique shop to let his customers eat inside at a table, so don't let the cold weather scare you away from a real treat.
