I really like this place. I have a 4 year old Volvo that needed new front brakes. The dealership prices were sky high so i called around to some independents. The commonreponse was "Well it could one of several brake sets. We really won't know until we get in there." I called Dunns and the lady asked for my VIN number. Dunn's has worked on both my German cars for a few years. I brought the 2004 Audi A6 2.7 V6 biturbo in for an oil change and they literally would not service the car. They correctly diagnosed a leaky injector and a suspected coolant leak and told me to get rid of the car. Yes, get rid of the car. Their tech 'would not work on it because the fuel smell.' This may not be the case but I got the feeling if you have a 20-year-old car (Audi?) they simply want no part of it. I've since found a shop willing to remedy the issues at a reasonable cost. Was recommended to get new shocks for rear of my 2005 BMW 330i when the current ones had under 10,000 miles on them. Did not realize until after service was done and I checked my service records log from the previous owner. My rear shock mount job that was supposed to be around $300 turned into a quick $1,000 with rear shocks that weren't needed. I do wonder where my slightly used shocks are. read more

We were in a very tough spot about to be stranded in Madison with electronic issues with our 5 Series. Mike was a lifesaver. Personable, knowledgeable and honest he got us fixed up well enough to get home in under an hour. Unfortunately a deep dive diagnosis spelled the end for that particular car but I honestly have no idea what we would have done without the help of these folks. I think I am going to be the lone black sheep who will post a negative review. But at least I should tell what happened to me, so it might help someone else. I've always owned European vehicles, and most of them new, so I never had to take them outside of warranty for repairs. Finally, I ended up with a used 2004 Land Rover which I bought for fun. I know it's a vehicle known for reliability problems, so I am not blaming Dunns for it being a service nightmare. But I do blame them for how they handled the repairs and cost. This happened back in 2011, and I've noticed their great reviews online, needed a place that knew how to work with European vehicles. They were very courteous, and super friendly. Suggested that I get a wheel balance and a tune-up (plugs/wires) done on the vehicle for $400 because I had a vibration on the steering, and it was due for service. Next day I get a call - when they were pulling one of the spark plugs out it damaged the threading , so I will have to pay the additional labor. Honestly, I know how to change spark plugs, I am a petrolhead, but I knew doing it on Land Rovers can go bad pretty quickly, that's why I needed a professional to work on it, but why would I pay for their mistake/responsibility? but I did, he agreed to "share" the additional labor cost with me half-half. Following day I get a call - when they put everything back together, it was leaking fuel. Injectors the re-fitted have failed. I was told each injector is $450 (I checked, they were $100 maximum online/parts store). The car had 8 of them, 2 were leaking. They wanted me to pay the part price, they will cover the labor. I needed to get this vehicle out of there and running, so I said ok. Now my bill of $400 is, close to $1500. Final day - I get a call my car is finally ready, BUT they scratched the fender badly, like a 7" scratch across, down to the paint. Must have been a tool or something hitting it. They said they will take care of it. But I didn't want them touching the car, so I went and took it back, they deducted $250 for the damage they did to the paint. I paid the bill. I was courteous to the end, and so was Mr.Dunn. But that didn't help the way I was charged. It is my belief, when we give them our car, whatever breaks in the process of them trying to fix it should be their responsibility, otherwise I can do it at home. But I am reasonable, things do go wrong, so I was willing to pay some of it, but to keep breaking things over and over...and finally what broke me was him saying - "you have to pay to look cool driving one of these" ! I still own a land rover ( a newer one), and a 2015 BMW M4, my wife owns a Mini Cooper S. I am actually looking for a reliable place to get her mini serviced and occasionally fixed. These cars need people who "know what they are doing", and I see lots of foreign cars parked at Dunns when I drive home to Middleton everyday after work. But I just can't take our cars there again, not after what happened. Sorry to be the guy to write a negative review, but I went here based on great reviews, and I didn't have a good experience. I started going to Dunn's Import in 1981 when I owned my first car, a Datsun 210. Almost 30 years later, Jeff Dunn is still taking care of my car, along with my 3 children's cars too! Locally owned and operated. As a VW and now an Audi owner, I have been bringing my cars into Dunn's for the past several years. I trust their recommendations and know that they aren't trying to add services, etc. just to boost the price. In terms of price, definitely cheaper than going to a dealership. Their waiting area isn't really built for waiting (a few seats right next to the service bay) but they offer transportation to drop you off and pick you up. read more

I have recommended them to friends and business associates that have foreign luxury autos as that is their specialty. I also bought a set of Nokian All-Season hybrid (winter/summer combination) tires from them two or three years ago on their recommendation and they are the best tires I've ever owned. I have a 2007 Volvo C30 that I've taken here a few times. I just love them. They're always knowledgeable and straightforward. I would never take my car anywhere else in west Madison honest! For basic oil changes and etc sure any old shop might be okay, but these cars really do need someone who knows what they're doing to work on it. The peace of mind is worth it! The also gave me a great loaner (Mercedes SUV) on a snowy day so I was able to make it into work while my car was in their shop. My 2001 Audi was having a lot of trouble (AC not working, wiper fluid by deploying, trunk hatch broken) and I went to Zimbrick to have it evaluated-- the bill was over $1000 to have everything replaced. I brought my car over to Dunn's and they quickly realized that a few things needed to be adjusted, and nothing needed to be replaced at all! I have a 2001 Porsche Carrera 4 manual. I was told by a couple of friends who own sports cars that for major repairs I should take my car to the dealer, which I'd been doing over the past three years for major repairs, including replacing the engine. Last week, I took my car to Dunn's Imports to have my transmission fluids changed and to check the transmission, because I couldn't shift into second gear (I let someone drive my Porsche who shouldn't). The news about the second gear was not good. It would require very expensive work on the transmission. Mr. Dunn took time out of his busy schedule to call around to his network of foreign car specialists and came up with a price that was less than half of what it would cost me at Zimbrick. He also gave me some good advice: since the car is 17 years old and I will never break even on the costs of the repairs I've made over the past three years, he told me that I can drive this car safely without the second gear. Since I don't do a lot of driving in the city, I use my Porsche for long road trips, he suggested that I change my driving habits and simply go from first to third. He even took me for a drive in my car to show me how to operate the car smoothly by skipping second. By doing so, he's saved me a lot of money. Mr. Dunn is very honest and cares about his customers. If I had brought my car to him three years ago, I would have saved thousands of dollars. So, before you do anything major on your car, I strongly recommend that you take it to Dunn's Imports first. After reading all of the positive reviews, it's clear Mr. Dunn knows how to run a business - by treating people fairly. My wife and I moved out to Middleton from LA a couple of weeks ago and my car was starting to stall out so I started looking into auto shops. I'm so glad my intuition was right on this occasion. When I arrived, Mr. Dunn knew we were new to town and spent a great 10 mins with us on restaurant suggestions. We ended up going with the Friday night fry thing at the nearby golf course. I started bringing my Audi here about 3 years ago. The staff is friendly and forthcoming. Generally speaking, car repairs suck but the mechanics here make the process here easier. Most importantly, I feel like I can trust them. I never feel pressured to get more work done than I can afford and they take the time to explain the repairs to me and answer my questions clearly and respectably.
