I believe that the key to running a business is consistency. Run whatever kind of business you want to run but be consistent. Their creemees are, quite simply put, perfect. First time, third time, eighth time, twelfth time. Never varying in intense maple flavor that tastes just like syrup right out of the jug. Never poor consistency. Always, always, thick and creamy and substantial. I did notice one difference late last summer; the size of the large cones increased a bit with no corresponding price increase. Prices for the creemees are super reasonable. Five of us went there the other day and the bill was pennies over $20. Two larges, 3 smalls. Sugar Shack brings back memories of little roadside ice cream places and snack bars and a slower, more peaceful, just plain better time. SERVICE-DOG DISCRIMINATION…read more I arrived with my trained service dog. Don, the parking attendant, told me my service dog could not leave my vehicle, claiming federal food-safety laws prohibited it. I explained that my dog is a service animal and that the ADA specifically addresses this issue that service dogs are exempt. I was directed to management. I spoke with Kim, the Cider House manager, and directed her to the U.S. Department of Justice ADA website, including the information explaining that food-safety rules do not provide a blanket exception to exclude service animals. They were given the federal guidance. They chose to ignore it. She contacted the owner. The owner's "solution" was that I could drive my car into the orchard..but my service dog had to remain inside the car not with me My service dog is necessary to mitigate my disability. A service dog locked inside a vehicle cannot perform those disability-related functions for me while I am outside the vehicle. That is not equal access. I told them directly that I believed I was being discriminated against. I told them I had three witnesses and that I would be filing a federal discrimination complaint. Their response? They were comfortable with that .....and believed they had done nothing wrong. What happened was humiliating and deeply upsetting. I went to Hicks Orchard expecting to participate like everyone else. Instead, I was singled out because of my disability and told that the service animal I rely on could not accompany me. A service animal sitting in a car cannot mitigate a disability. Equal access means being able to use the service animal I rely on...not being told I am not allowed to use assistance to mitigate my disability. We have been a team for over 6 years and travel alot internationally. We are well versed in these experiences and try to politely educate others. When we encounter people who aren't fully aware of service dog access rights, we are typically met with understanding once we show them ADA laws. Hicks refused to even consider they may misunderstand federal laws. I hope they will become more educated on ADA public access rights for service dogs to avoid excluding those with disabilities and the impact it has on their life's. We unfortunately left and will not return. our family has been visiting Hicks for years as a family tradition. our family and service dog was welcomed with open arms down the road at McWhorter's Orchard and had a great time there instead. we will continue our family tradition there moving forward.
