Café Joust - Mean Mr Mushroom

Café Joust

The most interesting things about this place are the cups and the decor. Drinks are weak and the $4…read morevegan chocolate chip cookie was small, burnt, and so bad I threw it out after one small bite. I was super excited when I realized most of this place is vegan, but was disappointed by flavor. The mocha was okay but lacked significant flavor and the vanilla bean latte must have had actual beans used because it was also lacking flavor but had a mysterious crunch. It's a cute place, though, and maybe other items taste better....

Vegetarians rejoice!…read more Where do I start? How about with the best damn sandwich I've had in years. This place was recommended to us, as my wife and I are vegetarians. I ordered the Fontina Panino (vegan sausage, fontina cheese, arugula and fennel mustard on ciabatta) and a cortado to drink. We take out seat in the very cool back room, and only after 5 or so minutes the drink and food arrives. Now I am a complete foodie, really tough on everything I eat, but after one bite I was in love. To the point where I asked Lauren, the owner, what mustard they were using, and then ordered a panini press when I got home hoping to recreate the magic. Perfectly chewy bread, just the right balance of sweet and savory, and that mustard. Truly amazing. My wife ordered the avocado toast which she said was perfection. I wish I could bundle this place up and ship it to New Haven because I'd be eating one of those sandwiches every week. As for everything else: The service was great. The atmosphere laid back and funky. Everything was reasonable priced. LOVE LOVE LOVE Cafe Joust!

First thing you see pulling up to Subversive Brewing is gravel. A whole front lot of it. And behind…read morethat, those tall industrial beer tanks. The gravel path pulls you in towards their outdoor area with picnic tables under big black+white umbrellas and there's a tent with white lights that'll be straight-up cozy once the sun goes down. You order at the bar, keep a tab if you're settling in and grab one of those tall number poles so they know where to bring your food. Inside, it's all high-tops and a clear view of the tanks cranking out their beer. Even though I've never been a beer drinker, I didn't mind coming to Subversive B's. Their online menu looked promising especially their vegetarian options. Though it wouldn't hurt if they threw in some seafood options too- but hey. I aimed for the Mediterranean Platter but I was told they "were all out". Grilled cheese the way I noticed online? Nope. Not in here. At this point, I didn't know how else to feel but resorted to their sweet potato+black bean tacos with red onions and Cotija. They slapped actually. Hubs tore into his buffalo wings and these Bavarian pretzels that were ridiculously soft and addictive. He washed it down with an ale, I stuck with a canned Paloma that hit harder than expected. The service is nice. The menu situation? Kinda irritating. Between the "we're out" moments and the website vs. reality mismatch, it's hard not to feel a little side-eyed about it. But the vibe, outdoor lights, beer tanks if you're a beer drinker, gravel under your feet, it's got charm.

Awesome brewery with great food and atmosphere too! I…read morevisited on a Sunday night in the winter and was blown away with the ample outdoor space complete with fire pits and comfortable seating. It was so warm and cozy to sit outdoors, which was awesome. My boyfriend ordered a beer and I opted for the hot apple cider. We also ordered wings, which were absolutely delicious. You order at the bar and they give you a number if you order food. We were really impressed with their ample food menu and great selection of beers and non alcoholic options. Definitely a must visit in Catskill!

The person I asked seemed to think this was a bizarre question but ultimately decided it was fine, as long as I could find a seat. Her tone would indicate that this was a near impossible task despite the shop having a population of exactly 6, but I managed to find one since I can identify what several empty chairs look like. I found it strange that I was waiting there for about 10 minutes, especially since the coffee I ordered was iced, but found it far more concerning that I was dumb enough to wait an additional 10 minutes after that before investigating. It turns out that there had been a cup of coffee poured, placed at the counter far from my seat, and in a position that was completely obstructed from my vision. It appeared to be iced as well. I asked if it was my coffee (since no one called my name, and if they did they didn't call it a second time) and was given "yeah" as an answer, presented in the manner one might respond to someone if they asked if we live on Earth. I had already sat for far longer than I intended to so I left, and luckily I was outside at this point because the coffee sucked and I was able to spit it out. I could have done that in the store too, but that would be impolite.

The shop offers everything you want or need: comfy seating, warm environs, genuinely friendly and attentive service, delicious from-scratch foods and beverages, and good prices. Gracie's is an elevated diner experience...all the breakfast and brunch things you could want, but up a couple levels from a classic greasy spoon diner. Not dissing the greasy spoon diner experience...love that...but this is based in that historical experience, with an overall nicer experience in terms of food and atmosphere. Also, before we get into the specifics, here are 2 words which would bring me in from just about anywhere: Donut menu. Yes, they make their own donuts here, and that's enough reason to stop in, take out, or worship at the front door. We got our donuts to go after the meal...The coffee was GREAT. Too often, coffee, which should be the opening star of a diner experience, can be flavorless, browned water. Here it was good. Bold as I needed it to be, and the perfect foundation for the rest of the meal. My next go-to if they have it brunch experience is biscuits. They have them...you can get a biscuit on its own or, heck, go for a mini biscuit basket! I live for a biscuit-forward establishment. The Full Breakfast (submitting biscuit or potatoes for the meat) would have been my choice, but I decided to roll my own and ended up with a biscuit, fruit cup, and side of Hash Browns. The biscuit was good, large, and perfect with butter and honey. They make the hash browns to order - large hash brown patties - and with 2 different orders of them at the table, one was overcooked, too brown, and not impressive...but the other was perfect and delicious...bordering on potato pancake territory in presentation and flavor. Our server was fantastic...we had a large party encompassing 3 different tables in the middle of a Sunday morning (On Easter no less), which is, of course, the busiest time of the week. She was friendly, enthusiastic, and never made us feel rushed. If I found myself in the Hudson Valley again, Gracie's would be a definite destination for me.
